NGT: Happy Valley to build new statue honoring Joe Paterno

BigBlueCane : 4/24/2014 4:42 am
Quote:

They have commissioned an artist, Zenos Frudakis, and will seek to raise $50,000 for "Joe's Bench" on the funding platform Kickstarter come July.

"We just felt that the university was not ready yet" to honor Paterno, said Kim Intorre, one of the organizers. "But the community is."

It's what everyone said when this story broke...
Dunedin81 : 4/24/2014 7:21 am : link
none of this happens without the hero-worship of Joe Paterno, but for too many people in that fanbase they cannot accept the contributions of Paterno's own failings to what went on, or the ways in which the same tendency driving this - hero worship, and the drumbeat of donor dollars it was tied to - drove the cover-up and facilitated the abuse.

Insulting in which direction towards the community for getting the statue or the university for not being ready?

I have no feelings either way, just cfurious.

with ned and BB56.

It's a shame that at the end of the day football won out over basic human decency. Sadly, the clapping seals will celebrate.

Simply pathetic.

interested in finding the truth is going to take the time to listen to all the professional investigative viewpoints of neutral parties to get to the actual truth about Paterno's involvement in the Sandusky scandal. You've been spoon feed the NCAA version and it's good enough for you. So all the people in State College, and all people associated with Penn State University, should curl up and go away quietly.

It's a cult, a delusional cult. The fact that the fond memory of a football coach takes precedence over the sexual abuse of children is beyond shameful.

cjd2404 : 4/24/2014 8:18 am : link
The group Penn State hired that would shame and embarrass the University and its employees? Because I know, that if I hired a company to do an investigation of that nature, I'd hire a group who would come to the conclusion I was hoping for. I do not believe Penn State would hire a group that would come up with such a damaging report.

Then there is the independent investigation, that was funded by the Paterno family? Do you really think that was Neutral?

Joe Paterno said he heard of the allegations from McQuery and sometime the next week called the AD to report it...Fine...However, Sandusky roamed the campus for like a decade after that...Don't you think that someone of his stature should have raised that issue to someone else? As opposed to ignoring the next 10 years? I know I would have done everything in my power to have the man removed from my campus and brought to Justice.

There might be some things I'd let slide but Pedophilia? I'm making sure you get hanged for that one.

That is the crux of the issue, Joe was indifferent and did not use his "celebrity" to ensure Sandusky paid for his crime
Dun.....
Hades07 : 4/24/2014 8:23 am : link
Don't paint all Penn State fans and grads with the same brush. I haven't respected Joe Paterno for a decade and a half before the rest of you mongos joined the party.

As a student there I learned very quickly that in Joe's eyes, everything took a back seat to football. Including the legal and moral behavior of his players. I was not surprised to learn that applied to his coaches too.
Penn State STILL doesn't get it.

That didn't take long, I guess they figured enough time passed

The coach they rallied behind is now in Houston after a very short layover in Happy Valley, so they needed to turn to an old familiar source of worship.
that's one sick, demented fan base

Absolutely, and I have friends who are quite capable of making that distinction. Some in that fanbase, sadly, are not.
So do they make

The new statue with his eyes closed? Or with his head up his ass?
From my very limited knowledge and perspective ...
Montreal Man : 4/24/2014 8:58 am : link
No statue. But I've no say in that.

What I did and still do object to was taking away the wins from the team, who as far as I know, weren't involved. They were kids who just went out and played and got screwed because of what their coaches did. IMO.
Disgusting..

I'm not sure how people are still proud to alumni and support that program. They are obviously sick and delusional.

Read the posts from LS. Nope.

Child rape is ok as long as your head coach reported it once then went on with his life as if nothing was wrong. I know with such oversight I could sleep well every night.
But Joe Paterno won so many football games tho

And this is why PSU should have been banned from football
armsteadeatslittlekids : 4/24/2014 10:00 am : link
Would be unfortunate for the current players but it would have been something to start killing the PSU football above human rights mentality there.
Jopa made mistakes - not defending those BUT
Reale01 : 4/24/2014 10:04 am : link
He also did many, many, good things and helped a lot of people. Do those all go away? He is a big part of the town and PSU history. Statues commemorate history, they do not judge history. Should Stone Mountain in Georgia be destroyed because it commemorates the Confederacy? Should the washington and Jefferson Memorials be destroyed because they each owned slaves? I think they had children with slaves - that would make them rapists. Should Jerry World be torn down because he picked his nose and overpaid Romo?

mistakes
Sneakers O'toole : 4/24/2014 10:09 am : link
are something you do and then realize you screwed up, like leaving a door open. What Paterno did was make a decision not to act.
It's a tough call...
PeterS : 4/24/2014 10:30 am : link
for his poor decision, he did a lot of good things for the university and the surrounding community.

In contrast, over in Gettysburg, you will find statues and monuments to Confederate soldiers who fought to divide the nation.

This is 2014, not 1776. Joe Paterno is not a Founding Father, he's a football coach. His sins should not be forgiven because he built a football program. Judged according to the standards of their day, Jefferson and Washington were men of their times. At this time in history, sitting idly by while child rape occurs in your school's facilities ought not be chalked up to being a "man of your time." Because that is not acceptable in our time and if it was ever acceptable it sure as hell hasn't been for a long, long time.
Personally I think this is a good thing
Go Terps : 4/24/2014 10:42 am : link
I want craziness out in the open for the world to see. I'm hoping their next move is to just change the name of the town to Carcosa.

Unfortunately, yes they do. Every decision you make in life has consequences. Some of those are minor and short lived and others stay with you the rest of your life. I teach my kids this about making good decisions. You can't simply wash away bad things in your life by doing good things. They don't make it go away. No matter what he did before and after that decision, that became the defining moment of his life. Maybe he should have made a better decision.

Exactly. I never understood the big deal about Penn State. I drove by there last week on my way to someplace else, and I can't imagine that place means much more than that to most people...a place you drive by on the way to somewhere more important. I've never seen a group of people with a more overinflated sense of importance over something so non-important.
