What do you do with Prince Amukamara?

mrvax : 4/24/2014 12:12 pm
I like the guy. I think he's an excellent corner that quietly goes about his business. I wouldn't consider him great but he's a good NFL CB.

DRC is due to make $7.2M in 2015 and then it jumps to $8M per year to keep him on board. Is this guy better than Prince?

If the Giants pick up Amukamara's option year in 2015, it will cost a whopping $6.898 million. Do you want to pay that much to retain him with DRC being labeled the Giants #1 CB?

Do you try and bang out an extension right now and hope Prince signs for less than an average of $7 million per?

This is a tough call. How much do you think he's worth? Is he as good as DRC? Should the Giants just let Amukamara go the way of Linval Joseph?

There's lots of things you could do with Prince Amukamara.

can't really decide now
UConn4523 : 4/24/2014 12:16 pm : link
but picking up that option is much cheaper than the franchise tag (IIRC) so its definitely an option that will be heavily considered.

I'm sure they want him here long term, but who knows if the two sides are even talking extension.

Really good. I'd try and extend him now for about 5 mil per yr and have two starting cb's for the price of a guy like Revis or Sherman (contract pending.)
So just to clarify...

$7-8 mill is too much for this player. Tell him "we'll talk later and let's see how it goes." Do not exercise the option. Look to add another corner.
I think they have
Pete in MD : 4/24/2014 12:22 pm : link
to decide by early May. $7mil is a little higher than his value IMO.

With guaranteed money in the range that DRC got?

It is all about the guaranteed money these days, from the player's perspective, I believe.
Don't they have to decide by May 3?

I thought it was crazy, but in light of the option still in question....hmmmmmm
Pick up the option..

This kid is a core player, imo, and should be kept around.

Bavaro_the_Mafioso : 4/24/2014 12:32 pm : link
Our pass rush is a big questions mark at this point. Get a deal done and try to get it under the 6 mil per year mark.
The option must be exercised by May 3 or else Prince becomes
Bobby Epps : 4/24/2014 12:33 pm : link
a FA at the end of 2014 season.

IMO the Giants SHOULD exercise the option for the following reasons:

if we don't, do we want to try and sign him as a FA at the end of the 2014 season?

we don't know who else will be available if Prince becomes a FA

it would cost us about $7M to have DRC for 2015; the cost to sign quality FAs in 2015 could be higher than $7M

although the $7M is guaranteed for 2015 if Prince is injured in 2014 so that he cannot play in 2015, the $7M otherwise becomes guaranteed only at the start of the 2015 season

the overall team cap is expected to increase in 2015 so that we should be able to afford the $7M

if this is Rolle's last year with the Giants, do we want to lose TWO starters for the 2015 season- Prince and Rolle?
Don't know all of the stipulations
SLIM : 4/24/2014 12:38 pm : link
If we designate him is the money guaranteed? If it isn't then it seems like you would want to lock him up. The 1 year price is steep but you can point to the Steve Smith story - who didn't take guaranteed money during his walk year and never saw any of that money. Prince would have to remain healthy for 2 years to get bigger guaranteed money. Is that a chance that a player wants to take?
Having read Klattu's link, I apologize for misreading the timing of
vibe4giants : 4/24/2014 12:38 pm : link
this thread.

But my answer would remain the same. Hopefully Prince would use feeling 'a little bit' insulted as further motivation and he has a great year. But I don't think the Giants should make that commitment right now.

I like Prince and he has continued to improve and is a solid corner. I feel like he has kind of hit his ceiling though.

How much do you pay for solid? If we don't extend him it won't be the end of the world. Who knows maybe we will draft Dennard or Gilbert. I would not be that surprised.
SLIM: the money is only guaranteed, as I understand the rules,
Bobby Epps : 4/24/2014 12:47 pm : link
against an injury that prevents him from playing in 2015.

Otherwise, the money is guaranteed only at the start of the 2015 season- so if he's not injured and we don't want him, then cut him before the 2015 season starts and Prince receives ZERO guaranteed money.
I believe his is still underrated by some people
Corey : 4/24/2014 12:50 pm : link
Prince is a really, really good CB. Except for interceptions you don't really want to hear your CB's name called too often. He flies under the radar because he's doing a great job keeping his WR off the QB's radar. He is going to be highly motivated to show his ability this season with the additions of the other CB's so get ready to have one of THE best backfields in the NFL this season.
For me
English Alaister : 4/24/2014 12:52 pm : link
long term deal and if can't agree then I pay the option.

Prince is too good to lose.
Pick up the option
JonC : 4/24/2014 12:56 pm : link
and work on an extension while seeing how he performs in 2014. This way you control his rights and there's no rush on inking an extension.

He's an ascending talent. Personally, I'd rather extend him and not have signed DRC, but if they have the cap mapped out as expected and we can keep both .... then Rolle is probably out next Winter, unless his expectations are closer to the Giants'.
well, first you have to start with
fkap : 4/24/2014 1:11 pm : link
accurate data.

DRC salary is 4.23/5.98/6.48/6.48 in year 2015/2016/2017/2018 with a roster bonus of 1 mil for 2015. No serious workout bonus to speak of.

second, you have to figure that the Giants already know what they're going to propose to PA, and it's likely to be a similar contract.

CB duo is where Reese is staking his claim. He passed on giving money to LJo and to Tuck. There are signs that he adds S into that equation, since he kept Rolle around for the year at a high cap hit, and maybe LB, too, since he re-upped Beason. So, hands in the dirt is yesterday's news?
extend
Phil in LA : 4/24/2014 1:20 pm : link
him.
They're playing chicken right now.
Enoch : 4/24/2014 1:30 pm : link
Whether the option gets picked up or not sets the table for extension negotiations. You either have a precedent of a season at $7MM or you don't. I think both parties would agree that $7MM annually overshoots what Prince would get were he a free agent right now. (Otherwise, Amukamara wouldn't be saying that he wants the option picked up.) So picking up the option likely makes a long-term deal a bit more expensive for the team.

IMO, it's worth committing to a marginal overpayment for 2015 in order to ensure that you can keep a good player as you work out what kind of longer-term contract offer you want to give him. And, hopefully, Prince's 2014 performance will make it less of an overpayment.
i'd over-pay for his option year
UConn4523 : 4/24/2014 1:30 pm : link
especially to keep us from over-paying long term.

Weird to say extend him now when we have no idea if he wants to hit FA or not.

I tend to agree. I like the player and even though the $7M option is high, if the Giants can afford it for a good CB, it's worth it.

Now if we had a stellar pass rush, the CB position wouldn't be as critical. I expect we get plenty of coverage sacks this year.

Pick it up and begin talking to Prince about a long term deal now. If he has a great 2014, he could make himself too expensive. If DRC plays well, Prince will probably be tested often this year.

DRC who has a history in question with his effort?

Thurmond who has a suspension on his belt and on a one year deal?

McBride who, while he played really well, is a journeyman?

Prince is the youngest of these men and hasn't gotten in trouble like Walter Thurmond has nor has he had his play be questioned on the field. He always plays hard.

Re-sign him.
I'd try to keep him
David B. : 4/24/2014 1:55 pm : link
He's young, and really just scratching the surface. If he's healthy, he has a big upside.
Prince is best
sackpack : 4/24/2014 1:57 pm : link
as a press cornerback at the line of scrimmage. Fewell didn't do much of that. Supposedly, Prince and DRC will play press coverage more this year. Let's see how Prince does when he plays to his strength. If he improves another level, then he is worth 6-7 million and Giant's have two #1's at CB.
If May 3rd is in fact
Pete in MD : 4/24/2014 2:03 pm : link
the decision date, the change in the draft schedule kind of screwed the Giants over. I'm sure the idea of the May 3rd date was that the team would have a good idea about their future at CB, including all recent draft picks and/or UDFAs.
The crazy thing the guy you gave the big money to
Mason : 4/24/2014 2:04 pm : link
was rated lower than Prince. Lock him up, actually lock him up. With the safety position in real doubt going forward at least control some factor in your secondary. Wish Perry would play more man to man, his secondary now fits that style. DRC is a man cover, Prince is a bump and run cover. I hope we don't see them 10 yards of the LOS.
Giants should clearly pick up the 5th Year Option on Prince.
Jimmy Googs : 4/24/2014 2:07 pm : link
Then let everybody in that secondary "duke it out" in 2014 as to who are the keepers for longer term deals.

The fact that they haven't at this point I presume means they either A) won't or B) haven't finished evaluating CBs in the draft.

Is there some other benefit gained by waiting if the Giants intent is to exercise the option?

The only thing I can think of is if the Giants were trying to hammer out a long term deal. Prince will probably only get better going forward. They probably should get a deal done as soon as possible.
You extend him
GiantTuff1 : 4/24/2014 2:16 pm : link
The Giants have shown that they value cornerbacks over say DT's when it comes to extensions, and it seems as tho the Giants will have the CAP space next year to absorb Prince's 5th year CAP hit.

Meanwhile hopefully an extension for Eli will be in the works after this season when he rebounds, and then that gives us the ability to negotiate Prince long term after this year.

There's no question he's on the upswing.
I had the same thought too mrvax, but
Jimmy Googs : 4/24/2014 2:17 pm : link
Prince didn't give any indication that it (an extension) was even being worked on during some of his recent comments.

So he seems to be getting hung out to dry a bit...

Giants should definitely pick up Prince's 5th year option
The Duke : 4/24/2014 2:18 pm : link
and then work to sign him to an extension that makes everyone happy. In today's NFL good cornerbacks are a must have and Prince is a solid CB who I think will continue to get even better. Having DRC on the other side of the field and Thurmond working the slot should also be a plus for Prince. We need to do everything possible to keep this defensive backfield in place as long as possible.

Very true. Especially with the shit pass rush we had last year. No telling how good/bad it will be this year unless we draft A_______ D_________.

he proves worth it this year, you keep him. Good corners are worth keeping at 7-8 per. Fans tend to think guys are easily replaced and thats not always the case. You may have to decide between him and Thurmond, though. We'll see what this year brings.
Maybe UKGiantsFan is correct
Some Fan : 4/24/2014 3:36 pm : link
We trade him on draft day. It is a weak year for CBs; we signed other guys to starter money; we will get something as opposed to him walking. He does not strike me as a big-time playmaker or shut down CB. Other teams may be hurting for CBs though and he is at least safer than a second or third round pick.

Are CBs weak in this draft or solid but not noteworthy? I think the draft is deep this year for corners maybe no future HOFers but solid guys with potential.
Giants value CB very highly under Reese

he's been
Les in TO : 4/24/2014 4:35 pm : link
a very good cornerback, both vs. the pass and against the run; he occasionally gets burned, but he also reads the ball well and doesn't get flagged for a lot of PI calls. you also don't hear his number called all that much in pass coverage which is a good thing. he is also a great character guy and has been fairly durable/takes care of himself in the offseason. i don't see him taking a big pay day and then goofing off.

This. I'd be stunned if we trade him on draft day. We just spent a small fortune to get DRC and Thurmond, but now we are going to weaken that very same position? Not happening, especially given it's a passing league, and the Redskins just got Jackson and Roberts to go with Garcon, Moss, and Reed.
I'm with JonC. Pick up the option and then work

The have to decise by May 3rd but the money is not guaranteed until the start of the 2015 NFL year. That means they can release him if he doesn't have a good year or sign him long term deal if they don't want the cap hit. Otherwise its like a cheap franchise tag.
Still no option news on Prince.
