DRAFT - Projects vs. (nearly) finished products

JOMO25 : 4/24/2014 1:50 pm
After watching a NYG team that was so unlike typical Coughlin teams, I think we are all on board with avoiding the JPP or Ron Dixon or Jerrell Jernigan type prospect. Granted, those types may pay dividends especially w a good coaching staff. But with what we endured last year:

A QB who still can't manage the play clock and is careless with the ball.

WRs who ran poor routes.

TEs on the roster who weren't near NFL ready.

A LT who lacks the requisite NFL toughness.

Interior OL that lacked talent and/or any ability to stay healthy (not a new phenomenon).

So, its time for a 2nd shot in the arm (the 1st being an excellent job by JR in FA). Its time to take a draft and re-infuse the team with toughness, smart play and responsible players.

Referring to guys like this: Aaron Donald, Ed Stinson, John Urchel, Weston Richburg, Zach Martin, Ed Reynolds, David Yankey, Joel Bitonio, Jordan Matthews, Tyler Gaffney, Chris Borland, Trey Burton among many others.

These guys range from Rd 1 to UDFAs, but what they share is that they are football players.
btw, I am not down on JPP

even after a down year (he's a great player), I just don't think we have the luxury of picking a pure upside guy like that this go around
Agree

I'd be happy to have at least half those players on our team. Glad to see someone else appreciates Stinson.
Stinson and Pagan

are guys that are strong, assignment responsible, honest day's work linemen.
No, we are not all on board.

I'd draft a JPP clone at 12 right now.
JPP may have been a poor example

but a guy like Kony Ealy - talented athlete but not near being ready football wise
I think a fair question to these player types are

Sure, these are football players, but do they project at the pro level?
Safer picks

I thought the safer pick in 2010 was Derrick Morgan, glad they took JPP. I dont think there is a potential athletic phenom, unpolished, upside-type player that the Giants would even consider at 12, so I dont think there is need for concern, at least not in the first round. I agree, no Robinsons or Brewers please.
I understand and echo (to an extent) the concern about projects...

but GMs need to have a 2-3 year horizon when they draft if they want to stay employed.
yeah cause the draft is so chock full of these finished products

that are just NFL ready... (rolls eyes)
