This team will never have a bullpen at this rate
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/24/2014 4:06 pm : link
He's going to scott rice Torres, and they won't have anything in the pen for the second half of the year.
With our
Metnut : 4/24/2014 4:08 pm : link
weak lineup and our good pitching, we're likely going to be in a lot of low scoring close games this year. We're going to need more than a couple of guys that we can throw out there in these types of games.
Daniel

Descalso batting sixth with a career .241/.308/.343 tells you all you need to know about the Cardinals this year. Losers of four out of five and just sucking donkey balls.
I still think
Mike in NY : 4/24/2014 4:14 pm : link
Collins should have had Germen warming up when we got guys on. With the insurance runs you bring in Germen for at least the 8th

but Dice-K might be resurrecting his career as a closer. I am impressed

I was surprised Matheny did not PH with Peralta in that spot. As bad as Collins is with the pitching staff, Matheny appears much worse with the line-up. Soon he will have the pitchers hitting 8th for no apparent reason

Two weeks ago he let Trevor Rosenthal hit in the bottom of the 10th with runners in scoring position. Of course he struck out and of course the Cardinals lost in the next inning. It's madness.
There's always lots to gripe about with this team,
Ira : 4/24/2014 4:17 pm : link
but holding the Cardinals to 6 runs in the series and winning 3 of 4 makes me a happy camper. Good starting pitching, good relief and good defense is a good formula. But we do need to get more hitting.
You know what

I'd keep on sending these guys out there, they get burnt, then our fabled farm system of young arms have to step in

This team just has to start fucking hitting.

Not terrible putting 4 runs on the board today.. we've done worse. The pitching has been really good, though. And after it looked like the pen was going to be an absolute disaster, it has been pretty solid.

Thankfully they listened to my idea to put Dice-K in the pen. Seems to be working out nicely so far.
Their defense which gets overlooked

Mets just went 3-1 on the Cardinals series and are now TIED for the Wild Card lead!

Who needs Batman when we've got the rest of the Justice League pitching for us!!?

Gee, Niese, Colon, Mejia, Wheeler = invincible!
.
arcarsenal : 4/24/2014 4:51 pm : link
LOL.. easy, buddy.

Next year we can start looking at that stuff. This team doesn't have the hitting.

Definitely nice to take a 4 game series at home against a quality team, though. Can't wait to get Lagares back.
starting pitching
sshin05 : 4/24/2014 5:11 pm : link
is carrying this team like no other. The bullpen hasn't been that bad either. Can't hit a lick and they seem to love striking out, but timely hitting is all you need sometimes.
You'd figure
Metnut : 4/24/2014 5:13 pm : link
that our pitching is even better next year, but I don't see how our hitting is. Is there a bigtime 1B, SS or OF upgrade that we can sign?
.
arcarsenal : 4/24/2014 5:15 pm : link
They're going to have to make a big trade for a slugger.. but I think that has always been the plan. Just not sure when they're going to make it happen. Probably after they see a little more from the young arms.

Puello is one possibility. We'll see how he does in Vegas. Also, at some point, one or more of our pitchers or pitching prospects should be traded for a position player. There aren't enough spots in the rotation for these guys + Thor + Montero and possibly + de Gromm.
Texas is a factory full of sluggers

2 game losing streak for all the Met bashing to resume. It is so much easier to beat up on them than to be happy.
We are a disgruntled fan base..
arcarsenal : 4/24/2014 6:22 pm : link
It'll take a while (and some consistent winning) for that to change. Sucks but it is what it is. As of today, I'm glad they're at least above .500.. the schedule this month has not been easy at all.
The Mets starting pitchers for next year
Gary from The East End : Admin : 4/24/2014 6:24 pm : link
Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Mejia, Gee, Thor, Montero, DeGrom and Colon. That's nine guys for five spots. Somewhere out there there has to be a big bat available for one or two of them.
Well if they are disgruntled
Headhunter : 4/24/2014 6:56 pm : link
that makes me gruntled I guess. They owe me nothing, same as the Giants, Rangers & Knicks. Would I love the teams to win? stupid question, but I choose to follow of my own free will and what ever happens there is always the next game

I don't see Colon and Degrom as starters next season. But yeah it's crowded. I hope Colon gets traded mid-season, and Thor gets brought up to start.

If that's your outlook, that's cool... you're entitled to it 100%. But you can't expect the entire fanbase to feel that way. I can deal with some losing/crappy years.. shit happens. This past football season was hard but the Giants have given me so much to be happy about in recent years that it's hard for me to get too up in arms about a down year. The Mets have been bad for a while now and throughout my entire time as a fan, they've really only been legitimately good for like 3 seasons. For a team I invest so much time in, I'd like to see them actually be considered one of the better teams in the sport again. I don't need a WS every year but at least give me more than 1 season of playoff baseball in 15 freakin years.

I've been following them since the first pitch in'62. Everyone that I have met since then that was a Met fan, still is a Met fan. The bad baseball is never going to turn a true Met (or any team of any sport) into a non fan. The ones that bitch and moan the most in my experience are drive by fans. The ones that when you start talking about the team at at a deeper level like the farm system or their past, have very little idea about it.
so if you bitch and moan, or you dont know the stats of minor
PhiPsi125 : 4/24/2014 8:04 pm : link
league players...That makes us drive by fans? Are you kidding me with that?

I've watched nearly every game for the past 20 years and I dont follow the minors at all. Im willing to bet that's the majority of fans too. That makes you a better fan?

I've seen you say a lot of shit here but that takes the cake.

Where did I call out anyone?
Headhunter : 4/24/2014 8:06 pm : link
by name?
I used the minors
Headhunter : 4/24/2014 8:08 pm : link
as a point, and where did I say you needed to know the minors to be a better fan?
you didnt
PhiPsi125 : 4/24/2014 8:11 pm : link
I just think you are way off.

I think that the people that may get pissed off at the current state of their team may even have a deeper passion for their team...as opposed to some people that are quite blase about things.
I complain about the team a fair amount..
arcarsenal : 4/24/2014 8:12 pm : link
But I think I also follow them more closely than the average fan. It depends on the person. Most of my friends are like I am.. we follow the minors and pretty much everything around the team. I just enjoy baseball exponentially more when the Mets are actually good. Going to a packed Shea every week back in 2006 was so much more fun than sitting in the morgue that is Citi Field. I still root for and follow the team no matter how good or bad they are.. but I've just grown a tad bit tired of all the losing.

Thankfully I think better times are finally within sight.
I am saying when you sign on as a little kid

to be a fan of a team
Usually it becomes a lifetime thing. We all want to win, but real fans don't walk away when the team loses. If you were a Giant fan in the '70's you saw lousy football for 15 years, I don't know of 1 Giant fan that stopped being a fan be caused they stunk. You want to win, but you don't walk away if they don't if you are a real fan

HH, I was just using myself as an example. I live and breathe the Mets. I get pissed when they lose and I'm elated with every win. I'm way too competitive to have a Zen-like outlook like you do (and I don't mean that in a bad way).

I guess I just have an opposite viewpoint from you, which is fine. In my experience, those fans who stay even-keel are usually the ones that aren't glued to the couch when they play.
I compare the Mets to the Knicks a lot..
Sean in PA : 4/24/2014 8:17 pm : link
in terms of organization incompetence. I used to be a diehard Knick fan, but it has wavered a bit of late. I just can't stand the pompous arrogance of Jim Dolan and I find Knick fans to be a pretty arrogant group of fans despite being a pitiful franchise since Ewing was traded. With that said I am excited about Phil Jackson and what he can do.

As for the Mets, I actually like Alderson because I do see a plan. A lot of Met fans bitch about the inactivity in FA, but I don't mind it. We all couldn't wait for Bay to leave and then what do we do? Give Granderson a long term deal. I do love the pitching and think they are coming around though.

As for the Giants, I'm just so damb proud to be a fan of the NY Giants.

This I agree with. The mets could lose every game of the season...and as much as I would want to walk away, I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Yeah..
arcarsenal : 4/24/2014 8:29 pm : link
I mean, it has gotten pretty bad at times but I never stopped being a Met fan (as much as I wanted to)..

Life would be a lot easier for me if I just rooted for the Yankees like most of my family does but I think I'll be infinitely more appreciative of a Mets world series title after going through all this turbulence. Unless of course, it doesn't happen in my lifetime.. which is also possible with this franchise.. but I like my odds.
look for me 1969 and 1986 for the Mets
Headhunter : 4/24/2014 8:37 pm : link
1986 1990 2007 2011 The Giants 1969 1973 the Knicks and 1994 the Rangers. That is all I have for thousands of games watched. BUT each one is special and worth the aggregation over the years and I wouldn't trade places with any fan of other teams
I know how we can get some hitting
Timbaktu : 4/24/2014 8:43 pm : link
Let's trade who is going to be an excess pitcher, Zach Wheeler, for Carlos Beltran.

Next, we can trade an 'okay' everyday outfielder in Eric Young for a top CF bat like Angel Pagan.

Then, we can trade an 'okay' 26 year old pitching prospect in Zach Thornton for a great buy low candidate with lots of power, Ike Davis.

Finally, let's trade Rueben Tejada and Rafael Montero for that SS on the Jays, Jose Reyes.

Then our lineup would be

Reyes - SS
Pagan - CF
Wright - 3B
Beltran - LF
Ike Davis - 1B
Murphy - 2B
Granderson - RF
D'Arnuad - C
Collins says Dice-K could be the Mets closer.

When asked about the possibility of using Dice-K as a closer at some point, Collins confirmed that he's a candidate (source: Mike Puma, New York Post) and then cited Matsuzaka's improved control as part of his thinking.

I don't understand the obsession with "naming a closer"
arcarsenal : 4/24/2014 9:41 pm : link
This is going to be the 4th guy we do this with in the span of 1 freaking month. Just use whichever guy is pitching well and has favorable matchups. There's no reason to keep going through this nonsense. Valverde was the "closer" for like one week.. now Farnsworth was for about 2 days.. now we're going to name Dice-K the closer?

I'm fine with giving him some opportunities but let's just see how he does and go from there. I don't know why Collins has to go nuts with designating these roles. It's pointless.

Eric Young Jr. is top 10 in the NL in runs, triples, steals, walks, strikeouts, defensive runs saved, and bWAR.

If Collins liked him before the season you have to think it's going to be even harder for him to put him on the bench now. I know his BA sucks and he strikes out a ton, but he's getting on base, scoring, and playing good D.
I think Reyes is batting around .200 right now

Buy low! Wouldn't trade Montero for Reyes but maybe a couple lesser prospects could get it done.
No way would I trade Montero for Reyes.
Section331 : 4/25/2014 11:35 am : link
I was a huge fan of Jose, but face facts, he's played one full season in the past 6, and he's already missed 16 this year! Plus, he is owed $92 million over the next 4 years. That's a lot for a guy who may not age well.
I wouldn't want Reyes with the contract that comes along with it
steve in ky : 4/25/2014 11:37 am : link
I really liked him but sadly his best days are behind him. He just isn't worth what he costs at this point.

It's not gonna happen anyway. I'd take him back if the Jays were just looking to get rid of the contract, though.
