he seems to be building
RasputinPrime : 4/24/2014 6:12 pm : link
wonder what he's got in the mortar...
it's all about consistency in his delivery
WeatherMan : 4/24/2014 6:17 pm : link
they had him on a highly structured offseason program this year, as last spring he showed up 20 pounds heavy and it sure as shit wasn't muscle. 6.2 of 2 run ball with 7 Ks to 2 BBs last time against the O's, the first start of his 4 this year where he was able to get the strikeouts going.
Should get a win
BillyBoy8384 : 4/24/2014 6:59 pm : link
If CC shows up and pitches his game we shouldnt be worried.

As I said earlier, Almost every pitcher who made a name for himself has used pine tar. Catchers usually put it on there leg guards and put some on the ball when they throw it back. My cousin was a Major League catcher for the Phils. Look at Lester last year. 2 obvious times he was using it. Bucholtz made a name for himself using it. I bet during October ball when it is cold almost every starter in the playoffs uses it if its cold out.

Why Pineda put it on his neck for the world to see knowing the sawx would be all over him looking for it is beyond me. All he had to was tell McCann to put some under his leg pad and it would have gone unnoticed like it does everytime a pitcher pitches in the cold.
Like the famous saying goes

Banuelos - injuries - holding my breath
Tracy - kinda Phelpsy no?
Camarena - raw?
Clarkin - young and a few years off

It's not like we have anyone ready to challenge for a rotation spot next year. I'll pray Banuelos can stay healthy.
Tracy has a decent ceiling....
Dunedin81 : 4/24/2014 9:24 pm : link
maybe even a 3. Injury issues though.

Camarena is really polished, superb command, locates four pitches. His problem is that his FB tops out at 88 or 89 most games. If he could add a couple ticks he's be a legit front of the rotation type, but he just throws too damned slow.

two questions:

Is Judge playing OF or 1B so far this year?

Katoh or Avelino?
The Tampa announcer...
Dunedin81 : 4/24/2014 9:38 pm : link
says he thinks Camarena was around 91 or 92 yesterday. If that's true it could be big.

Avelino much more than Katoh, Katoh has been overmatched this year and even though Katoh is fast (and starting to steal bases) shortstop is still the premier defensive position on the infield, catcher excepted.
And Judge is primarily playing RF...

14-5 demolition of Boston and his only comment in the entire thread is on Jeters fielding.
I actually
MookGiants : 4/25/2014 12:23 am : link
didn't even comment on it until after 10 other people talked about how bad of a play it was and then how rough of a night Greene had.

And it wasn't my only post in the thread, so nice try. I only watched last few innings because I was watching hockey and nba playoffs.

Am I wrong when I say Jeter is terrible in the field at this point?
thankfully
MookGiants : 4/25/2014 12:27 am : link
Jeter is hitting decently well because with the defense he's giving if he's out there hitting .250 he would be a huge negative. His defense can't continue to be this bad, he's giving away hits and runs on a routine basis
I would say Jeter should get tomorrow off but

You're not wrong. Actually, last night between his fielding and his hitting I was thinking maybe Jeter is sick or something, because he just looked bad doing pretty much everything. At least he hit tonight.

Look, he's going to be 40 this year. No one has played a full year at SS in the history of MLB at his age (I believe I read that somewhere). He's coming off a year of injuries. It's not going to be pretty.

But I think he has a lot of desire to win one more World Series this year and he'll be a good leader.
the closest comparable I can think of would be Luis Aparicio in 1973
Del Shofner : 4/25/2014 12:40 am : link
at age 39, and looks like he played 132 games or so.

For those of you not so old, Aparicio was a great SS and is deservedly in the HOF, as will be Jeter.
Luis - ( New Window )
As bad as he's been recently in the field
MookGiants : 4/25/2014 1:03 am : link
you have to believe it's just a bump in the road. He's atrocious going to his left but he's generally pretty good with anything he can get to, that hasn't been the case this week. Likely just a bad week and hopefully doesn't continue.
I agree
mattnyg05 : 4/25/2014 6:36 am : link
You're not wrong to say he's been terrible in the field. The last three games he has been.

I've been burnt out by a similar jeter "hater" who just kills him routinely (and also the entire Yankees for that matter, and is a Yankee "fan"). My point to him has been simple:

You can't hate athletes who do what Jeter has done for your favorite team. You just can't. It's almost impossible. These types are the same people who wanted Mattingly gone before the leg kick, who wanted LT to stop blocking someone's path in 92-93, who wanted Ewing traded before he got traded. I wonder how many people wanted Mantle to take a seat at the end? When these guys leave, you can only PRAY the next one in line is half the player.

Sometimes you have to take the bad with the good in terms of them being relatively shitty at the end. It happens. Jeter isn't even that bad right now, he's had some bad fielding games for sure. The trade off is everything he's done in the past, of course it's the past, but he's not crippling your team (and his presence IMO helps regardless).

Sorry to vent but your comments just seemed to click with someone else who baffles me in their hatred of Jeter, more so than you. And I'm not even a Jeter ball worshipper, not by a long shot, but that persons attitude has made me at least a Jeter defender.

Greg from LI : 4/25/2014 10:48 am : link
Omar Vizquel started 136 games at SS for the Giants in 2007 when he was 40.
Jeter hasn't been nearly as bad
kmed : 4/25/2014 11:05 am : link
as some of the people are saying(hoping, don't let them tell you different). He certainly has had a few rough moments in this past week and he definitely doesn't have good range at this age, but he's been solid enough throughout the season. 2 nights ago there was a nubber up the middle that Jeter got to(to his left) and the ball took a weird spin and went by jeter. Jeter was bashed for his range when it had absolutely nothign to do with his range, he just missed it. The dude is 40 and he's helping out offensively, the need to point out on a daily basis that he sucks is ridiculous and agenda driven.
Yay, Omar played 136 games at SS at the age of 40.
kmed : 4/25/2014 11:09 am : link
1. The dude was one of the best defensive SS's ever.
2. He also hit .246 with a .305 OPB.
no agenda on your need to rush to his defense

Nobody is white washing anything.
kmed : 4/25/2014 11:13 am : link
He's got no range at this age. Range, specifically to his left, has always been an issue with him, it's gotten worse at age 40. He's still adds value at SS because there is a lot more that goes into the position. Most don't understand that. It's annoying to see the same people bash Jeter over and over like they have been doing for a long time now(and been wrong and look like idiots at the same time). The dude is 40, he's hitting .288 with a .373 OBP. His defense, for most of the season, has been ok. It's certianly not nearly as bad as some want to make it seem. Those same people are the ones who thing range is everything that goes into playing the position and I'm trying to tell them that it doesn't. Trust me on that one champ.
how is stating the truth "bashing" him?
Davisian : 4/25/2014 11:17 am : link
But I love how you're the only one who understands the nuances of the Shortstop Position... you're the best, buddy. You know it all..

And by all, I mean you just pretty much listed mooks issues with Jeter, while simultaneously getting the vapors about looks issues with Jeter.

Bravo

His defense has not been ok
MookGiants : 4/25/2014 11:17 am : link
it's been terrible. It hasn't just been one bad week, how about the game where he just flat out missed an easy double play ball in the first inning against the O's and they go on to score 3 runs when the inning would have been over.

His hitting has been fine, not great because he's hitting for absolutely zero power and has a .700 OPS as a result, but it's been fine.

MookGiants : 4/25/2014 11:32 am : link
no one earns the right to suck ass in the field. They are trying to win games. I'm not saying Jeter should be benched, but he needs to play better defensively. Right now he's not even making the plays that he's always made. He's had balls hit right at him that he's missed, he's had throws where he has just fired them directly into the ground. We know hes not going to get to much of anything going to his left, but the other stuff he needs to clean up.

fridge
Davisian : 4/25/2014 11:32 am : link
That's a different point and one is agree with, but pointing out his defensive deficiencies shouldn't be a reason for Professor Shortstop excelsior over here to get all butthurt every time its brought up.
It's simple?

as in JerseyJoe simple or as simple as knowing the sport ScottyThickones simple?

He must be going through some professional mental anguish these days. He battled yesterday and stuck it to the Sox. Anyone else annoyed at how Bradley Jr. eyed up Sabathia after getting hit? Just walk to first and be happy you're on a MLB roster. Sabathia can dust you whenever the hell he pleases.

at "I know the SS position" What, from your beer league softball leagues?

Yeah, we're awful fans because we dont ball wash Jeter like you do. Fuck off
No, you guys are just bad fans in general.
kmed : 4/25/2014 11:35 am : link
I meant to type no offense, sorry. No offense, but you guys suck as fans for a large variety of reasons.

I've played SS from age 5 to 38, regardless of what league. I've played and still play in highly competive leagues and SS is SS bud. You on the other hand excel at Xbox and I've seen you, no way you are getting drafted on any sports teams. No offense.
yeah
MookGiants : 4/25/2014 11:39 am : link
your softball leagues and some high school league really gives you the expertise on the SS position in the majors. Hey, I played basketball and football throughout high school, I'm now an expert on everything football and basketball, since I played those sports from age 5 i know everything.
By the way,
kmed : 4/25/2014 11:39 am : link
you two haven't just bashed Jeter. You bash everyone(except Arod). So far this season, the following players suck:

Ellsbury(although you guys have shut up since the actual season started)
Jeter
Brian Roberts
Kelly Johnson
Tex
Ichiro
Soriano
Gardner
CC
Girardi(for not playing Betances in high pressure situations in April)

I'm sure I'm missing a few
HA!

have I said one thing about Teixeira or Gardner? You wont find a bigger Gardner fan on BBI than me
I know as someone that's never played sports, it's hard to grasp,
kmed : 4/25/2014 11:43 am : link
but that's precisely correct. If you played bball from age 5-38, specifically a certain position, you would understand the details of said position. It obviously doesn't mean you play anywhere near the pro level, but you understand it.

If a hockey player has played goalie his whole life and never played pro ball, he'd understand the details of that position way more than some couch potato that says everyone sucks.

must have been a psychologist and doctor at some point in his life, because based on his posting history he can get into the minds of players and also know how injured they are. He should run for President since he knows everything. Shit, send your resume to the Yankees right now and see if they'll give you a tryout at SS, since you are so highly skilled and knowledgable about the position maybe they will let the pitcher hit and you can be Jeter's DH

no one gives a fuck that you play beer league softball. Seriously. I played sports all throughout high school and play tennis regularly now and pick up basketball. I don't pretend to know everything about a position because I go down to the local YMCA to play a fucking basketball game. You're pathetic, really.

Just because I understand the position, doesn't mean I can play MLB. At my age, my range is way worse than Jeters and I don't know if I can hit ML pitching at this point in my life. I'd love to try though, would be fun. I'm not sure my resume would get me anywhere either, I'm sure there are lost of people out there that know the position. I have a job anyway, I don't think I'd want to look for a new one, I like my job.
and I can't speak for Greg
MookGiants : 4/25/2014 11:47 am : link
but I've never said Ellsbury sucks. And I still hate that contract, he's a good player but he's also making 20+ million and is on the wrong side of 30 and has 6 years to go after this one. Long term deals to guys on that side of 30 are just bad business. I've never argued that Ellsbury can play, but keeping him on the field and also 7 years is my issue. He's certainly been better so far than anyone could have predicted

All those exagerrations and insults don't really make sense. It's a poor effort to deflect from the truth, but hey, you gave it a shot. I'd kill you in tennis, set it up.
what a fuckin joke.. age 5 to 38??? whoa. that's some bonafides
Davisian : 4/25/2014 11:50 am : link
I don't need to find you Cochise, your special brand of flaming hypocrisy is on every fuckin thread.

But I guess I understand now why you get so fired up about hockey. Must be frustrating to lose arguements to a guy who's played defense from age 4-42 and therefore must know more than anybody. Ever....

God you're pathetic.

Davis,
kmed : 4/25/2014 11:51 am : link
I will destroy you in hockey. Set it up.

Mook, maybe you didn't say Ellsbury sucked, but something about him being incredibly overrated.
do you even skate bro?

I can skate and skate well.

Set it up cochise. You need to learn a lesson.

MookGiants : 4/25/2014 11:55 am : link
compared to the money he is making he is overrated. He's never hit like he is right now in his career, if he simply puts up what his career averages are he is overrated. I understand they have to overpay in free agency, but he's getting paid like a 35 homer, 100+ rbi machine. The back end of the contract is going to be a big issue. I'm happy with him for 2-3 years but i dont think it will work out well after that.
Much like the Arod and CC deals
kmed : 4/25/2014 11:56 am : link
haven't stopped us from improving the team, neither will the Ellsbury deal if he's not playing or playing well at the back end. He's a game changing ball player, does everythign on the field at a very high level except hit for power.
many of them
Davisian : 4/25/2014 11:57 am : link
But it would be hard to learn them from you with all that Jeter and fluffy cock in your mouth.

Call my agent, I'll rake your tits.

Different environment now with a potential international draft looming and all of the caps on spending in the draft and IFA. Teams are also locking up guys early and not letting them get to FA more now than they ever did. They can only put a band-aid on things so long, eventually for sustained success they are going to have to build things from the ground up.
Wow. Good thing I took this thread in that direction.

-I'm not a Jeter ball washer. But some people seem to enjoy taking steaming shits on him any chance they can, which i think is wrong if you're a Yankee fan. Pointing out his deficiencies is one thing, hating him for no reason is another.

-I played SS in 4th grade. Does this apply?
