...have the opportunity to get a TE the caliber of which hasn't been seen in this league since Tony Gonzalez...you should take the pick, and its a HUGE need.
Ebron should be there at 12. However if we go OL, that is a HUGE need as well.
As much as they may like Evans, as well they should, there will be very good WR prospects available at 43. No need to sell out to move up for Evans when they can get a very good WR in the 2nd.
There is a tremendous amount of WR talent in this draft
said that Evans only played on the right side at Texas A&M and while he did not say it, gave the impression that he is not as high on Evans as everyone else. Really likes Brandin Cooks from Oregon State and likes that Watkins has a running back body; meaning he can take punishment.
how good is the source of this information? It seems unlikely the Giants would divulge this info to anyone, especially anyone in the media. The article refers to an 'unidentified source'. What the heck does that mean? How one earth does the Daily News have access or knowledge about what is on the Giants draft board?
How would a young Jerry Rice perform with Eli cringing on the ground with the ball crammed into his ribs?
Being obsessive about the offensive line doesn't get you anywhere either. None of the "Can't miss" tackles in last year's draft, the "blue chippers" everyone wanted, were good enough to play left tackle last year.
the best TE on their team last year.
They did not try to sign him.
He was a great blocker and had speed, the best TE the Giants had since Bravo.
The Giant front office had their fingers up their behind.

BINGO!
My main takeaway from that post article on the Manning trade...
...is that Accorsi's version of the story, about picking Rivers without having a trade in place, is complete bullshit.
Most of us have known that for ten years, but there are still a few holdouts who think Smith called after the Giants made their pick. Even Ernie eventually pulled back from that ridiculous claim, saying they had a deal in place with the Chargers, but they couldn't be sure Smith would keep his word or that the League would approve the trade.
and presumably they did given their conviction that BR would still be there, perhaps the best move was to take the 2nd from Cleveland and then flip it to San Diego with Rivers and a 5th.
I'm sure that was discussed ad nauseam over the years though.
At the time, I would have been ok with keeping Rivers. And, he's still playing at a high level. And, the bloodline thing is bullshit - he's not a racehorse.
1) It was hard enough to sign Eli with the allocation for the #4 slot. If they had picked seventh, it might have been impossible.
2) Even if Abrams and Condon had figured out a solution ahead of time to Problem #1, the Commissioner's office wasn't going to let the Giants profit that richly from Archie Manning's intransigence. Ernie could have Eli if he wanted him, but the Giants had to pay full price.

Eli got criticized to a large extent because his play was erratic. It took him a while to settle down. Early on, he had issues with accuracy.
And, again - the point was not that he didn't catch any heat. He would have caught lot more had he not been a Manning. It's not that hard to understand.
Eli has gotten more exposure because of his last name, but he's never gotten some sort of pass because of it.
If you want to argue someone got a pass, John Elway is your man and I don't see "Manning" there. He took some heat for it, but, in part because of the era, it went away fairly quickly and didn't actually significantly come back into conversations about him until recently.
...your words, "Being obsessive about the offensive line doesn't get you anywhere either."
Your point about last year's OTs is well taken, but here's the point I would like to make.
I'm definitely obsessed about the O-line, but I guarantee you that Jerry Reese is even more obsessed about it. Why? Because his job with the Giants depends upon it.
And why is that? Because every one in the organization knows he neglected the O-line via the Draft and when he did go O-line he missed a lot more than he hit.
A lot more.
And now we have a team with the worst offensive line in the NFL. And we also have our 2-Time Super Bowl MVP QB in a surgical boot because of the worst, F-ing line in the NFL.
Jerry Reese will be obsessing about the O-line in practically every round of this year's Draft. And he will devote high picks to this unit and hope like heck they develop quickly!
DT Donald, OL Martin or OL Lewan are the three most likely picks for us unless we end up trading down.
Ebron should be there at 12. However if we go OL, that is a HUGE need as well.
Evans...not going to be there at 12. No way.
Ummmm, David, doesn't it make you THINK? I mean, c'mon THINK.
Especially in Round 1.
How would a young Jerry Rice perform with Eli cringing on the ground with the ball crammed into his ribs?

It was accepted? By who?
Fans of opposing teams, for the most part, have never let it go -- hell, there are plenty of Giant fans that still hold it against him.
And, again - the point was not that he didn't catch any heat. He would have caught lot more had he not been a Manning. It's not that hard to understand.

He was Peyton's brother so there were always going to be comparisons. And, he struggled a bit when he first got into the league.
