Raanan NJ.com: Giants think highly of Odell Beckham Jr.

"Every now and then you have a player go in the top 10 [and] nobody saw it coming. How about WR Odell Beckham Jr. from LSU," former scout and current NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah said recently. "This is a player a lot of people are excited about. And if we see a guy like Sammy Watkins potentially go with that No. 2 overall pick, and then you see Mike Evans go early on, I think Odell Beckham Jr. is next in line.

"What he can do in the passing game -- go up and get the footall, run after the catch, can stretch the field vertically, and then the added bonus [is] he's an outstanding returner. So to me, he's a wild-card player. I think people might be shocked on the outside, but a lot of love for him inside the league."

The Giants are in that group. They think highly of the explosive wide receiver..."

but I can't see a scenario where he would be the Giants pick. He's not Watkins or even Evans imo, and passing up on Martin or Lewan if one are available for Beckham would suck. Really need to come out of this draft with a lineman who can potentially play immediately
He sure fits a high position of need for the Giants
ZogZerg : 5/4/2014 11:21 am : link
I could see him at #12.
If he's a difference-maker extraordinaire,

I'd have no problem with the Giants drafting him at 12

Listen, I'm going to offer you some unsolicited but well-intentioned advice: People are sick of you. I've done some informal polls, run em through survey monkey. These are methods I learned in poli sci 101, which I now teach. The results are in and you're not a fan favorite. You don't have the experience (min. 33 years) necessary to make these sorts of judgments. You need to relax and let the men talk and decide.

A: You could be looking at the third wide receiver ó is it [Odell] Beckham or [Brandin] Cooks? Or the first safety, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix."

I'd love it!!!

I remember watching him as a freshman, and thinking he was the best receiver on the field.

I think people have this misconception that because he may be the third wide receiver taken in this draft, that somehow he should knocked down because of that, but I think there is a chance he ends up being the best of the bunch when all is said and done.
I like Beckham, not at 12 though

I love Beckham. There are two things that get brought up when his name get attached to the Giants. One, his supposed attitude. Two, his height/position. We have Cruz and Jernigan. Beckham, because of his height, may be looked at more of a slot receiver. The Giants need a big target on the outside, imo. I also feel that we need speed too so I would love Beckham on this team and we can move Cruz and Beckham around to create mismatches. I would definitely draft Beckham over Ebron.
Beckham and Martin
RAIN : 5/4/2014 11:38 am : link
are similar that they are safe picks. To me Beckham has the higher ceiling. I'd be happy with either.
If Martin, Donald and Evans are gone,
Ira : 5/4/2014 11:47 am : link
this might be the best of the rest. Or, if we do trade back a few slots, he could be a target.
i have never been less excited about a first round pick
GiantsFan84 : 5/4/2014 12:00 pm : link
than this year. the giants should come away with either Martin, Donald, Ebron, Evans, Beckham Jr, or Lewan. I'm fine with any of those guys.

The Giants are getting a very good football player at 12 at a position of need.

Just please don't draft a S there.
shouldn't you be excited
Sneakers O'toole : 5/4/2014 12:01 pm : link
by the prospect of getting a very good player?
Beckam is
TMS : 5/4/2014 12:03 pm : link
clearly the 3rd best WR in this draft. We need a #1 WR to replace Nicks and he could be that guy. His size and combine measureables compare favorably with Watkins and are better than Ncks' were. No problem with this pick if it happens.
Size is an issue
Superman10 : 5/4/2014 12:08 pm : link
Look at the top WRs in football today.

Calvin Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Josh Gordon, Andre Johnson, AJ Green, Brandon Marshall, Julio Jones, Dez Bryant, Demaryius Thomas - all 6'2"+ 220+.

If you take a receiver 12th overall, you would want him to have a chance to be in that elite category of #1 receivers. At 5'11" 200, the cards are stacked against OBJ. He's fast and he's quick. But #1 receivers are what they are because they can physically overpower defenders.
So if Mike Evans is sitting there at 12,
Superman10 : 5/4/2014 12:10 pm : link
take Mike Evans. Otherwise, go with Lewan or Barr, IMO.
I think Beckham is the #2

I know that I oft repeat this refrain, but the Giants are not drafting an OL at 12 that they expect to play immediately. The backups/starters, barring late FA pickups as other teams dump players, are already on the team.

We may not like it, but that's the way it is. Drafting someone like Martin (who I like, but not at 12 in this draft) is a next-year-and-into-the-future pick.

I really think that we go impact player from WR/DT/DE/DB unless someone extraordinary drops. This draft is so deep at OL that there are a ton of very good players who can be had in rounds 2-4 that fit the "next year" MO.

Pugh started all 16 games last year didn't he? And Martin easily could start at guard, or even LT if Beatty isn't ready as the guy they brought in from NO was pretty awful last year and it would at least be a competition between him and Martin

On Beckham
eagles nut : 5/4/2014 12:49 pm : link
As I'm sure most of you know, Bob McGinn of the Milwauke Journal-Sentinel does an excellent series of positional previews for the draft where he has scouts rank the top 5 at each position and then assigns points for each player(5 for 1st place, 4 for 2nd, etcetera). For WRs, he had 17 scouts give their rankings. This is off memory but Watkins was easily 1st, Evans was 2nd with 59 points, and Beckham was 3rd with 55 points. 15 of the 17 scouts ranked Watkins the #1 prospect. 2 out of the 17 scouts ranked Beckham #1. While it's possible that the scouts are trying to spread misinformation, it lends credence to the idea that there's not as much separation between Beckham and the other top 2 receivers as most think.
and Eagles Nut
mrvax : 5/4/2014 12:53 pm : link
it seems there are legit concerns on Evans being able to get separation/open vs. tough DBs.
He looks
muhajir : 5/4/2014 12:56 pm : link
Like a future very good #2 wr imo. Is there really that much of a difference between him and all of the late 1st and 2nd rd receivers? Someone like Evans brings something new to the table, size, great hands, toughness, great college production.

If hes not there we should go pass rusher to compliment the hopefully superb secondary and make the defense potentially lethal, or....go Oline and build a force field around Eli and grab a wr in the 2nd.
The best prospect of all

Would
AcidTest : 5/4/2014 1:02 pm : link

an OL with a nasty streak since Jimbo

I was waiting for you to bring up Pugh. Tell me you seriously think Pugh would have sniffed starting if the injury bug hadn't hit the OL hard and heavy. He's the definition of the exception to the rule.

Well, the injury bug is a legitimate issue this year when you have Beatty who may not be ready for opening day, Snee who hasnt been able to stay healthy recently, a guy at center who hasnt played in 2 years. It's pretty easy to see scenarios where a guy like Martin would play immediately.

As a matter of fact
JonC : 5/4/2014 1:41 pm : link
MG doesn't think OB is on the Giants' tier at #12, thinks it's too early for him.
what Buck said
JonC : 5/4/2014 1:44 pm : link
When I stack up the top 20 of this draft, OB isn't on it.

NYG should walk away at #12 with a better prospect, be it Martin, Barr, Lewan, perhaps Fuller or Ha-Ha if Gilbert and Dennard are gone.

Phil in LA : 5/4/2014 2:23 pm : link
WR in the draft, and though I'd rather wait till the second and get one of the power receivers like Robinson, if the Giants idiotically blow off OL again, Beckham is the playmaker I'd take.
Greg Jennings 2.0.
Klaatu : 5/4/2014 2:28 pm : link
But Jennings went #52 overall. I don't know if Beckham is worth taking 40 spots higher, but the Giants may think that he is.
I think very highly of Beckham.
Vin_Cuccs : 5/4/2014 2:45 pm : link
Before all the pre-draft activities/hype, I was really hoping he would make it into the 2nd round.

#12 might be a bit rich for him but a slight trade down would be ideal.
I think Beckham is in the discussion
