Giants Consider Ebron a "Future Diva"?

Draft Insider Tony Pauline reports teams are souring on North Carolina TE Eric Ebron due to his "high maintenance sort of personality."
Pauline specifically mentioned the Giants, one of the league's tight end-neediest teams, at No. 12 overall as a club backing off Ebron. "He's a me type of player and he always has been," Pauline continued. "He's a me type of person on the field and off the field. He's the kind of guy that was complaining when he didn't feel he was getting the ball enough. He's not well liked by all of his teammates."

Appearing on WGR Sports Radio 550 Tuesday morning, Tony Pauline of DraftInsider.net says the tight end’s act wears thin for some.

“He's a high maintenance sort of personality. He's a me type of player and he always has been. He's a me type of person on the field and off the field, and I've known this since November. He's the kind of guy that was complaining when he didn't feel he was getting the ball enough. He's not well liked by all of his teammates. He's not a prima donna, but he's a bit self-centered. I don't know if it's just a maturity question, or that's the way it is. I hear it runs pretty deep.” - Tony Pauline

Definitely wouldnt matter if Ebron is a MacAdoo "type of player", Giants FO want Shockey out for similar reasons to let Eli develop no way they bring in a similar personality.

that is a bit of revisionist history regarding Shockey

The Giants FO didn't want him gone....Shockey demanded that he be traded
They wanted Shockey out when Eli was a work in progress

He's a 10 year veteran trying to cement a Hall of Fame pass now. Situation is different. Not saying they'd take him, but I don't think the Shockey situation is comparable at this stage.
Shockey's lean on Eli
Rocky369 : 5/6/2014 10:49 am : link
was at a different stage in Eli's career. While I'm not saying it's a perfect fit, having another Shockey-type would not be as detrimental.

Agreed.
Could this be...

It's sort of been my impression of him
GiantTuff1 : 5/6/2014 10:56 am : link
I'm not a fan of his personality, he is a spotlight-desiring player and those types tend to be quite a bit more on the complaining/baby side. I just don't see his his personality makeup fits the Giants.

Let's get someone a little more serious and hard-nosed like TE Niklas.
Agree with TTH and kmed.

shockey out. If I remember it had to due with the SB where he wanted to bring his mom or be on the sideline. Injured players cant be on the sideline but something happened where Kiwi was allowed to. That's when he went to reese and went off on him forcing a trade. But I thought it had to do with the SB in 2007 and not being allowed to do something.
This could obviously be a smokescreen....
Wonderphil11 : 5/6/2014 11:02 am : link
but I'm also sure the Giants very much remember just what a pain in the ass Shockey was regardless of where Eli is in his career. If they see some of the same traits in Ebron, you can bet flags are going up.

That was part of it, but I don't believe that they would have traded him if they felt it was in the team's best interest to keep him. They're quite clear on not letting the inmates run the asylum.

alluded to Ebron's lack of maturity last week. Polian doesn't consider him a first round pick.

At the end of the day they gave in to Shockey's demands.
There really isn't another way to look at it unless you want to go with a reverse "you can't fire me, I quit" approach
Show me a great receiver that doesn't want the ball
#10* : 5/6/2014 11:46 am : link
Some were quieter about it but they want the ball. Shockey was a prima donna but guess what, he was one of the best TEs this team has ever known. Who here would take away that TD catch over Dawkins. In this offense Ebron should have enough balls thrown his way so it shouldn't be an issue.
ASF or Niklas
Bleedin Blue : 5/6/2014 11:48 am : link
anyone???? I want to see us go Martin/Lewan @#1 ASF/Niklas @#2 then another OLineman @3 and then get a wideout and round this draft out!
Shockey was just a diva he was a psycho. EAs book

I don't think Eli would fare well
JOMO25 : 5/6/2014 11:59 am : link
with a DIVA type of personality. I don't think he has a big enough personality to manage these types of teammates. Eli is a good guy, but leadership in this regard is a challenge for him.
that may have been true

when it was players here who predated Eli. But this is his team now, and I think Eli is firmly in control.

AnishPatel : 5/6/2014 12:08 pm : link

I think he forced their hand in the most efficient way of forcing a franchises hand by just going to the GM and screaming and yelling. At that point, you can't keep a player like that. The Giants wouldn't keep a guy who defied the coach, went to the GM and shouted at him.

Mind you this was a Reese new to his tenure as a GM. You need to set the tone of your job and this move proved that he couldn't let Shockey stay.

Alot of info coming from Gmen recently bashing Ebron.

A little too much if you ask me and very out of Giants character.

The evidence we could be targeting Ebron:
1. Both Reese and Ross went to visit/scout Ebron
2. Mara called offense broken
3. We have a gaping hole at TE and Reese has often addressed our biggest holes in round 1 (Phillips,Nicks,Ross,Pugh)
4. our new OC and potential HC in waiting may have a big say in this and he is a former TE ocach to boot

I wouldn't hate this pick b/c I think he will be very good maybe even great but I'd much rather get a couple other players like Donald,Beckum Jr,or Marquise Lee who I think have higher ceilings.

+1. I'm really get the idea that many fans know less about their team's inner dynamics than what is in the boxscore.
He just turned 21. How shocking that he's immature!

I been riding that wagon since day 1, but only after Lewan or Martin. If both are gone, my guy is EE. If the other OL guys mentioned above are there, then I would go Lewan or martin 1st.

I think ebron can be a highly productive player for us.

GiantsFan84 : 5/6/2014 1:17 pm : link
who gives a shit. if the guy is good enough to be a diva than its a good pick. eli can handle ebron. eli is the man now, it's not like when plax and shockey were here and eli was just coming into the league. eli is the $20M a year QB and 2 times super bowl MVP.

Only because you can get a Tight End in the second close to Ebron. Once Martin is gone.. the drop off in Oline talent is HUGE
sounds more like a jets player

from that description 2011 proved what happens when a team believes collectively and plays as one what can happen with that superbowl run,a me-me type plays will never do that

i think there are later TE that will be good gilmore, amaro and others i want them to fix the OL and not hope a collection of other teams cast offs can patch up a "useable" line for another year again the DL is set at starters just need some depth to replace hankins/moore on the depth charts the OL needs 2 picks this draft to ensure we dont see a repeat of last year, thou i expect the new scheme will help alot in that regard anyway
