Realistically what position will a rookie come in and start

NYBEN : 5/6/2014 11:39 am
or play a significant role? Any offensive tackle that we draft does he take over at LT for Beatty? I just don't see that happening, not immediately anyway. Can someone come in and compete with Snee to start at RG? That could be a possibility but I think Snee is going to surprise everyone and come into camp ready to go and try to keep his job at least for another year. Any RB we take will probably ride the bench unless Wilson can't go or injury happens. WR? there is room to step in to be a factor. TE? the door is wide open for a rookie to be the guy there. A DT could come in and become a part of the rotation. I don't see a lot of spots where a rookie is going to make a immediate impact. If I'm wrong help me out...thanks!!
probably play

RT first...
It's a good point
BillT : 5/6/2014 11:48 am : link
That's why I don't understand the Martin love. Where does he start? OLT? Is this what everyone wants? You think Martin will come in as a rookie and be the OLT. Don't see it. ORT? He's not beating out Pugh. Guard? You're taking a guard at 12?
Lewan starts over Beatty after the first....

as Ray Perkins said about Mark Haynes:
Victor in CT : 5/6/2014 11:58 am : link
Martin will be a starter as soon as he gets off the plane.
I don't know if Martin automatically starts but that's not
Jimmy Googs : 5/6/2014 11:59 am : link
a good enough reason to pass on him. We would want him, or any other draft pick, to come in, push the veterans, and compete for a job.

If Martin can do that quickly great. If it takes a good part of the season, or an injury to another player gives him a better opportunity than so be it.

But practically speaking, there will be opportunities-galore for Martin to become a starter anywhere on this offensive line in 2014.

if you bring someone in to play RT where does Pugh play? Move him to center and have Walton as depth?
If you

take a player at 12 ..you want them contributing right away.

Where?
Pugh wasn't supposed to start as a rookie either.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/6/2014 12:02 pm : link
He probably entered camp as the third or fourth option, and wound up starting. First, Brewer and Mosley were shifted because of issues elsewhere - particularly at RG and C - and also turned out not to be very good guards. Then Diehl got hurt. Voila - Pugh begins the season as your starting RT.

It would be nice if you could predict where a rookie will start, but you really can't until you watch him in pre-season and see what happens to the rest of the roster.
Both WR and DT
mrvax : 5/6/2014 12:03 pm : link
usually take some time to get up to NFL speed. A rookie could work his way in but probably not start full time.

You get the best play maker with your #12 pick. Which guy will likely have the best play maker career should be the consideration at #12, IMO.
any position on the team
alligatorpie : 5/6/2014 12:04 pm : link
period. done.
The O-Line is in a state of flux
Sneakers O'toole : 5/6/2014 12:05 pm : link
and with Beatty coming off injury, a guy like Martin could find himself in the starting week one lineup. That's not far fetched in the slightest IMO.
regarding zach martin
alligatorpie : 5/6/2014 12:06 pm : link
only the 'next year is all that matters' crown would not get this.

OL, any position, might be our best OL from day one, helps us win. you 'dont get it' if he does not start at OLT from day one?

really?
If Martin was drafted, the only way he's not in the lineup
YAJ2112 : 5/6/2014 12:07 pm : link
is if Walton, Snee, and Beatty are all good enough to beat him out. Nice problem to have for 2014, and we'll need him to start in 2015 when Snee retires.

You would like them to contribute as fast as they can.

Based on the current makeup of our O-line (talent & injury-factors), do you really think that will take long at all?
Seriously?
Carl in CT : 5/6/2014 12:15 pm : link
TE, OL, DT and even S.
Martin
UConn4523 : 5/6/2014 12:18 pm : link
starting or not gives us either a starter or depth at the most important positions other than QB. That's how I see it.
I for one certainly value guard and center
alligatorpie : 5/6/2014 12:21 pm : link
enough to draft one in the 1st...especially if they also project as possibly our best OLT as well.

in any case, a great guard has high value.

what we have now is Pugh and Schwartz:

and a pile of question marks due to injury, age, lack of experience or a blend of those factors.
Can't tell yet.
Red Dog : 5/6/2014 12:22 pm : link
It depends on who they draft, what happens in camps and pre-season, and the inevitable injuries.

But there are a number of possibilities including anywhere on the OL, TE, Split End, and OLB opposite McClain.

Pugh started because Dheil got hurt in camp,if DD doesn't get hurt do you think Pugh starts last season from day 1? IDK

So you think a Safety comes in and starts immediately and or makes a impact on anything other than special teams? I don't see that. I agree on DT and TE
I don't see DT at all, barring injury.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/6/2014 1:00 pm : link
A healthy Cullen Jenkins starts week 1, period. Hankins is the other likely starter, with Patterson as a viable fallback option. Even Kuhn probably opens camp ahead of any rookie whose initials aren't AD.

Even if the Giants draft Donald, they will likely bring him along behind the starting 3-tech, Jenkins. Donald would work into the rotation over the course of the year, contributing early in nickel and dime packages. If he's pressed into duty early as a three-down player, a rookie DT that small will be running on fumes by Thanksgiving.

Sneakers O'toole : 5/6/2014 1:02 pm : link
agreed. Donald will get beat up his rookie year if he takes significant snaps.
Pugh could easily switch to LT if they wanted to put Martin at RT
PatersonPlank : 5/6/2014 1:03 pm : link
If they draft Martin, and Beatty plays like last year, this is what they could do. If Beatty is ok, then Pugh can stay at RT and Martin can replace Snee at G.
TE is impossible to predict.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/6/2014 1:04 pm : link
We don't know what the role is in the new offense, and we don't know where Robinson really stands. Even Ebron wouldn't be a lock to start. Coughlin's maxim about running backs might apply at TE too: "If they can't block, they don't play." (Unfortunately, he didn't have much choice with Brandon Myers.)
PatersonPlank: The thing about the offensive line is...
Big Blue Blogger : 5/6/2014 1:07 pm : link
...decisions have to be made earlier than at other positions. You want to give the "ones" at least a month as a unit before the games start to count. That was part of the problem last year: disarray in July quickly became disarray in September.

Where?

LT, either G or maybe C depending on if Walton is actually healthy and can play. only Pugh and Schwartz are guaranteed spots at this point
I think
NYBEN : 5/6/2014 1:26 pm : link
Beatty IS guaranteed a spot ..it's his to lose but he will be the starter for the first preseason game if healthy and the starter for the regular season opener.
To answer your question
Jay in Toronto : 5/6/2014 1:31 pm : link
RG, possibly C, possibly OLB, possibly #2 WR, possibly RB
Boy, does C. Casserly (NFLN)
PEEJ : 5/6/2014 1:32 pm : link
hate Beatty. Never misses a chance to knock him.
Silly me

I forgot TE
What's with
ryanmkeane : 5/6/2014 2:47 pm : link
everyone being so against taking a guard at 12? If he turns out to be a pro bowler and one of the best guards in the league - don't you think that's a pretty successful pick? Especially one that can play tackle as well? Plenty of teams have taken guards in the top 15 - why all of a sudden is this is a horrid idea?
Also the fact
ryanmkeane : 5/6/2014 2:48 pm : link
that the inside of the offensive line was an unmitigated disaster last year...
LT, in my opinion, depends 100%
Matt M. : 5/6/2014 5:02 pm : link
on Beatty's health, regardless of who they draft...unless a rookie comes in and blows them away. Realistically, a TE could start as a rookie for this team.

Almost anywhere on the OL.

In case you missed last year.
Martin would start
George : 5/6/2014 7:32 pm : link
somewhere on the OL - if not for Beatty than for Snee, depending on their health.

TE is the most glaring opening on the roster, though, and I'd be surprised if we don't address it in rounds 1-3 (shocked if we wait til round 4 or 5; horrified if we wait til round 6; and prepared to become a fucking Browns fan if we don't address it at all in the draft). I'm guessing Fiederowicz in the 3rd.

Maybe you missed the off season where we signed multiple O-lineman 2 of which are potential starters
I'd go a step farther and say for sure the Giants
BlueLou : 5/6/2014 7:42 pm : link
signed 2 starting OL this offseason. Add Pugh and it still leaves 2 OL slots wide open given injuries and poor play by Snee and Beatty last year.

And I'm not the least bit sure which positions will be filled by whom.
TE, C, OG, LT, maybe WR
Ron From NYC : 5/6/2014 9:24 pm : link
There are 4 positions, maybe five where a rookie could start.

I think that is right Ron...
