know I'll be in the minority but I'd be very happy. I think he's going to be an excellent player/would make for a potential bounty returning chip from the right team.
he's not a guy you can count on to be a rock for a decade like Eli. I'd love to watch him play for a couple of years but I just cannot see him lasting in this league.
of the rumors have teams expected to go QB waiting till later picks (Specifically the Browns with Bridgewater and Carr), maybe a team hoping to wait on Manziel jumps up, doubtful but worth a try.
Manziel is ideal for a team that needs to put more butts in seats, and wishes to add to it's press coverage. And one that has a HC that wants to buy into Manziel's style of play.
Does that sound like the Giants? In NY he would become the center of media sh!t storm the likes of which the world has never seen! It would be a catastrophe. And there's NO WAY Coughlin would allow it.
I agree, could be a desire to stir up trade partners. Certainly, if he's still there at 12, such a rumor could be worth a lot.
We're certainly trying to develop an interest in teams trading up
And I love Johnny Football... But there is absolutely zero chance we take him...
So you think the dude is just making it up out of thin air? Cmon. He's just doing his job. Isn't it more likely that the Giants want this to be made public?
"could benefit from working alongside Manning for several seasons.."
He quotes his source as "a person with knowledge of the team's draft philosophy". That could be anyone who has studied the Giants since JR became GM, and doesn't even have to be an insider.
I don't see it happening. Based on the FA signings, it looks like the team is restocking for another run with Eli. They need someone who can start immediately, not someone who won't see the field for another 4 years.
Just the thought of JohnnyF a Giant just made MY head explode: KABOOM!
Right and that's exactly the point. But I think it's a moot point as he'll be gone before 12 and that's been decided already. This nj reporter doesn't change that.
And I don't think Jerrah believes Romo is his guy after this year. He'll be what 36?
moving on to a cheap QB option is a reasonable move. I'd even advocate for it if not for my unconditional love for Eli and my belief that he will bring us another title or two.
If we had Rivers or Roethlisberger, for example, I'd be pounding the table now for us to take Manziel and move on...not unlike we did from Collins to Eli.
The position is just too expensive. It's out of whack.
There are two possible reasons the Giants would want this out there:
1. Get teams to draft QB's before our pick so the other position players are available at 12.
2. Boost the value of our pick should Manziel fall to 12.
By checking the round 1 board that team most likely would be the Browns with their 26th pick, would should be able to grab a slew of picks if they moved up that far for Johnny football.

I agree... Makes it more likely a team will jump the Giants and takes a QB, but I don't think he helps boost the value of our pick at 12. The reason for that is Stl is already rumored to want him at 13 thus if someone wants Manziel they would have to go to 12 to get him. Same value no matter what.
To me if no QBs go and all the top players we want are gone... Take Manziel... Look at QB when Aaron Rodgers fell. Don't think they are regretting it.
I don't understand the reasoning behind thinking that
the Giants are saying (through a source) that they might take JM at 12 so that a team that really wants JM would trade with the Giants.
If a team says they want JM, why would they trade out of the opportunity to take him? What the Giants would want is for a team that wants JM to trade up to 11 to take him, not the Giants' 12th pick.
and Jerry Jones was specifically asked if they'd consider taking JM. Without saying no, he pretty much hinted that they are not interested in drafting a QB with their first pick.
And I'm not at all ready to move on from him. But if McAdoo really does plan to mimic the Packers' offense, he would have zero of Rodgers' mobility to work with using Eli. But Manziel...???
info out there to stir the pot.
That said, on some levels it might not be a bad pick. The front office has to at least consider the QB position going forward, Eli's future, economics, Nassib's potential.
Whether true or not, it sure would sound believable in some circles and make a few front offices scurry around.
Well, Coughlin is only going to be here another couple years.. he can't coach forever. If we took JM, he'd be here a lot longer than TC I would think (or hope)
that actually thinks the Giants are suddenly gonna get super-cute and draft someone just to hold them for ransom. When have they ever done business that way?
This year they have a natural smokescreen built in. They don't have to play all these games. They have so many needs, nobody knows what direction they're leaning.
Of course, the Giants could be feigning interest to coax a trade from a team that wants to move up to No. 12 for Manziel.
I think Manziel is going to do well in the NFL, but he does have a tendency to throw the ball up for grabs. We've been infuriated by Eli doing that for years, but at least he has two SB MVP awards. People would explode if Manziel did that as well.
But can you imagine how this place would MELT DOWN if we did take Manziel?
I really don't see any scenario in which we draft a QB this season.
I can however see a scenario in which we do next draft. The giants want to see how Eli bounces back this season before they start planning for the future, IMO.
value after this draft would occur, but they'd absolutely have to be willing to bench him at some point and, no matter what happens this season, cut him after the year is done.

If they don't trade him, the media circus will kill the team. The first time he throws an INT people will be screaming to put Manziel in. The media will follow suit.
Is out of the realm of possibility. Anyone saying otherwise should not even bother watching the draft and instead focus on a nice crossword puzzle, perhaps some Sudoku, something where they can't say anything stupid out loud.
Maybe we take him and then immediately trade him to San Diego
Nothing is out of the realm of possibility but there is realistic and unrealistic. This falls under the category of the latter. I'd actually kind of like it because I think he's for real. But I would be completely stunned. I don't see it happening.
So, ok.. it's not "no chance".. but it's very close to it.
RE: RE: They wouldn't have to trade Eli, as he has little to no trade

To be honest, they aren't likely going to be very good this season and throwing the #12 overall pick in a talent heavy draft at a QB, when they have so many other holes they need to fill, wouldn't help matters in the slightest. A media circus wouldn't likely hurt some great contending run.
If they commit to any first round QB, they have to commit to him and that means Eli likely gettting benched in-season AND absolutely must be cut in the offseason (barring some incredibly unlikely trade situation popping up).

Correct. My feeling is that when teams talk about a player, the only reason to do so is to confuse other teams. Or to have fun at their expense. Not to show other teams their hand.
Of course, they would "consider" Manziel. You expect them to say, "oh hell no...that kid isn't on our board, so anyone who really wants him, don't worry about a deal with us." It's gamesmanship.
Exit the reason to talk up a player you don't want

The Rams have the thirteenth pick. If you want him, you trade with the Giants to get ahead of them if you think they might take him.
to get readers interest and try to make a subject somewhat legit, by throwing in phrases such as: "by an anonymous person within organization" or like this one, "a person with knowledge of teams,,etc etc etc"
is just playing the part. Being a sportswriter is a two-way street. To cultivate sources for your benefit, you sometimes have to serve as a medium to get stories out there that are really smokescreens that benefit said sources.
If Manziel is still on the board at 12, that means most if not all our targets are gone. Lets drum up interest for someone to trade up ahead of the Rams at 13 and the Cowboys at 16 so we can trade down with no one left in our top 2 rows.

Eli and Freeman, and there is a report we would take Manziel. If he fell to us, you trade the pick if someone wants him and you ask for next years first rounder, he is a QB, and if a team wants him at our spot, they will pay the price rather then lose him, so I pray he falls to us, he could make the Giants pick at 12 twice as valuable.
of the other GMs around the league are not stupid. even if the Giants want this rumor to grow legs to drum up trade interest, it won't really have an impact.
First off, disclaimer: I don't think there's a chance we draft Manziel.
Having said that (in my best Jerry Seinfeld voice), if we didn't have as many needs as we do and he were sitting there at 12, with Eli beginning to enter the Third Act of his career... it would make a lot of sense.
I love Johnny Football, but there are good rumors and absolutely
You guys need to get real. The GMs are stupid, but not that stupid. Yeah, anything is possible - so folks should tweet about the Giants moving up to 1 to snatch Clowney, tweet about moving to #2 to snatch Robinson, tweet about moving to #3 to get Mack, tweet about trading back into the first round to draft Johnny football, etc.
You guys live in La La land if you think there is ANY chance giants go Johnny Football. Either that or you don't pay any attention to what Jerry Reese does.
They're rumored to like Manziel. Posturing to increase demand for a trade down if anything.
Listening to NFL radio this morning they were saying the opposite. I forget who it was, basically said the Rams have no interest in Johnny and it was all a smokescreen.
It's so hard to believe anything when it comes to the draft.
That's the first thing I thought of. I wasn't sure if you would confirm so didn't ask again. Isn't this kind of off the wall unbelievable thing? You think jones is that dumb to believe this? This is really off of left field type thing.
However, this was what I thought about regarding what you said last night after reading this article.
Would you rather me not relay this information to you? It's what was said to me. I qualified it with a paragraph that it easily could be the Giants trying to coax a trade if he's on the board.

There's not a bit of substance to this post. The reporter has information he's conveying - you just basically scream loudly its not true because you say so.
We need to fill some holes. If Eli has another lost season, then it is likely we would draft a QB high next year....and we'll be picking very high if Eli lays another egg of a season.
I think that the idea that the Rams' interest in JM
Step 1) Let Eli play out the season, he leaves for a big money contract, and the Giants get almost guarantee 3rd Compensation Pick.
Step 2) Then in 2015, you let Johnny Football fight it out with Freeman and Nassib. Use that preseason to drive up their trade value and dump one of either Freeman or Nassib on a QB needy team for another third round trade pick.

People there are obviously clueless.
i'm a big bridgewater fan so if we went QB thats the guy i want but manziel is a 'reese' guy imo
1. Get teams to draft QB's before our pick so the other position players are available at 12.

This
This would help slide another player to them.
Giants might have Manziel highly rated and he might be talked about but I cannot see the Giants seriously taking him.
+1 or find a trade down partner

You know there's zero chance how exactly?

They draft Manziel or any QB at #12 (they're not going to, but say they do), Eli's gone after 2014.
Very much disagree. Every play is on the table now. Trade up, trade down, pick and trade whatever. It's all smoke and misdirection at this point.
C'mon 8 o'clock.....

Love when guys need to exaggerate to make a point.

Eli is 33 and will stay 33 all (regular) season long.
My bad. You're right, Eli is about 2.5 years younger than Favre was when Rogers was drafted.
Still if you really think Johnny football is going to be great and that you can get some value for Eli, it would be tempting.
Come on, clearly it was leaked by Giants to push those wanting a QB to do it ahead of us or call us for the #12 spot.
If they don't trade him, the media circus will kill the team. The first time he throws an INT people will be screaming to put Manziel in. The media will follow suit.

We have to get a successor soon, and it ain't Ryan Nassib.
JM is a polarizing figure--you either love em or hate em. Can't ignore his abilities, and he could possibly hide a shaky OL.
Worth consideration whether they plan to trade the pick or not. IMO.

LMAOOO
This.
That's exactly what I said. Some people above were implying that the Giants were leaking this to get teams to trade with them.
I LOL'd
Just because he's relaying certain info doesn't mean he's being "trolled"..
much ado about nothing.

Otherwise how do we distinguish from information that is actually reasonable.

so this season we carry 4 qb's?
Brilliant!
if he lands in NFC East I'll have to hate him.
That narrows it to anyone who has looked up the giants draft history for the past five years.
Real quality reporting.
- A big no on the rumor that they're thinking about QB Johnny Manziel.
For the few confused folks on this thread.
