Still an Impressive Group of Playoff Slayings

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/8/2014 6:14 pm
2007:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7)
Dallas Cowboys (13-3)
Green Bay Packers (14-3)
New England Patriots (18-0)

2011:

Atlanta Falcons (10-6)
Green Bay Packers (15-1)
San Francisco 49ers (14-3)
New England Patriots (15-3)

Imagine having most of those records and losing to the "lowly" Giants?
BUT,
Big Blue '56 : 5/8/2014 6:16 pm : link
we have missed the playoffs 4 (10-6 one of those years) out of 5 years..2 SB trophies pale in comparison to that

Just consider the defeat of the 15-1 Green Bay Packers...that's hardly discussed even by Giants fans, but taken by itself, it was of the biggest playoff upsets.
You're right Eric, we are the best!

I think about...
rocco8112 : 5/8/2014 6:24 pm : link
...that too. We have been so spoiled during this era of Giants football. The second Green Bay win is almost a footnote when overall it was a huge sports upset.

Plus, the Giants did not just win that game, they rolled the Packers.

Also, in the playoffs, Lambeau is Eli's house.

I can to enjoy the phease

It is impressive when you lay it out in that format.

I agree there, for me that game was a throwback, just the level of physical intensity in the hitting, especially by Jacobs and Bradshaw on the Packers D, it felt like it belonged with the 1990 NFC title game.
Aaron who?

Tom who?
The 2007 Green Bay game was the one that I was the least confident

going into. I honestly thought they would win the other 7 games.

Best game: 2007 Super Bowl or 2011 San Fran
Most satisfying win: 2011 Green Bay or 2007 Dallas
It was awesome

Epic and Amazing

Life altering and truly satisfying

I still get chills thinking about those two runs!

Woooo Hooooo! For the rest of our lives
Coughlin never would have rested Eli the last

game of the regular season in 2011 the way McCarthy did with Rodgers..Big, big mistake, especially with the two week bye

That's still a tough one for me to watch, even knowing the outcome! The fumble on the punt return, the McQuarters fumble after the INT, the poor play/angle that lead to the 80 yard TD "pass", the TWO missed FG's....Yikes.

I don't know how I avoided a heart attack watching that game...

Ha! Fair point, BB'56....

Of those two runs, the '07 Dallas game was the most satisfying non SB game for me..

That's the modern day equivalent of beating Bill Walsh and Joe Montana in the SB TWICE!

The defending champion Packers were the first 15-1 team to go one-and-done in the post season...and they even had the refs on their side. That was an impressive win for the Giants.

However, the win in Dallas in the '07 run remains my personal favorite. That win was very satisfying.
Nice topic for draft day,

Talked to an Eagles fan last night who flat out admitted he rooted for the Giants during those playoff runs, especially against the Patriots, and he loved it. First time I heard that from an Eagles fan. Also Green Bay in the cold is so classic you have to love it.
In absolute terms
BlackLight : 5/8/2014 7:18 pm : link
beating the 15-1 Packers in Lambeau was very impressive.

In relative terms, it wasn't THAT surprising. They beat us by a FG in our house, and you could tell we were peaking by the time we played them again.

Given the weather conditions, beating Green Bay in the 2007 playoffs was far more impressive. I don't think many people would've predicted that Eli could be that good in that sort of environment.
To few things in life hit me like hearing a broadcaster say
wgenesis123 : 5/8/2014 7:22 pm : link
"The Giants Are Going To The Super Bowl".
We slapped that Packer team around.
phil in arizona : 5/8/2014 7:30 pm : link
If I remember correctly, the only reason why they were even in the game was because of a ticky-tacky roughing call on Osi.

I also remember losing a lot of respect for some of their players when they didn't give the Giants enough credit for taking it to them.
2007 vs Green Bay, that game was fantastic.
BlueLou : 5/8/2014 7:33 pm : link
The Plax vs Harris matchup was gold. But even better was watching Eli totally outplay Favre that game. And until that time, one of the knocks on E was that he didn't handle inclement weather well. He was awesome that game, our WRs and other receivers must've dropped at least 5 well thrown balls. Aikman was very laudatory of Eli's play that game. He said at one point something like "Eli doesn't look like the weather is bothering him at all!"
eh I don't think the 2011 run was that impressive
Overseer : 5/8/2014 7:55 pm : link
as far as SB runs go, outside of the Niners game which was epic (probably my favorite Giants game ever). 2011 is magnified by its resemblance to the 07 run.

The Falcons were a pretty run of the mill playoff team and Matt Ryan is simply not that impressive a player.

The Packers record was notable, but Green Bay's defense was horrendous that season, typified in the game by the brutal coverage on the hail mary pass.

And New England, while still "New England", was not even in the same stratosphere as the 07 team and had a D that gave up a ton of yards, too.

2007 trumps 2011 by a mile.
Agree Eric, the 2007 Greenbay game
ZogZerg : 5/8/2014 7:57 pm : link
was my favorite from a list of great games.

After 2007 we all said a run like that would never happen again. Then 2011 showed up. Awesome time to be a Giants fan.
in both runs..

the opponents had a combined 54 wins. Anyone know what the "record" would be?
The 2011 Niners game was my favorite (non-SB) of those

It was a rematch (well, kinda) of the epic 1990 NFCC, and about as physical and even a matchup as you'll see these days. And once again, we kicked our way to a victory.
The 2007 game against the 13-3 Cowboys can be debated as
Reese's Pieces : 5/8/2014 9:17 pm : link
the most satisfying win for the Giants, but for the Cowboys this was the worst loss of the Romo era. They beat us twice during the regular seasons. The Dallas radio announcers admitted that they expected to walk over the Giants.

The 'Boys dominated the first half but with a 14-7 lead and 47 seconds left in the half, they let the Giants tie the game.

I hate it when players who made great plays in those games are practically forgotten, and when remembered it is usually to degrade their skills and congratulate the Giants' getting rid of them. Rookie Steve Smith got that drive started with consecutive catches of 22 yards and 11 yards with a face mask added on.

The Giants offense did nothing in the 2nd half except score a short field touchdown (Dallas 37) with Smith catching two more including an 11 yard catch on 3rd and 6 from the Dallas 20.

Then I think the legend of the Romo choke was born. The Cowboys had the ball three more times after the Giants took the lead. The first was on their own 13 yard line, but the last two began on the Dallas 44 and the Giants 48. Romo just had to lead his team on a short touchdown drive to win the game and knock out the Giants.

As ever since, he couldn't get it done. An intentional grounding penalty helped stop the first drive. The second drive got as far as 1st and 10 on the Giant 22. A four yard completion to Witten and three incomplete passes ended the game.

I don't know why I typed this all out. It just brings a smile to my face. Since then I've never had to take crap from Cowboys' fans.
Eric from BBI..oh that game has been discussed
