9. NAT BERHE, San Diego State (5-10, 194, 4.57, 4) Three-year starter at a combination safety-LB hybrid position. "He's tough as hell," one scout said. "Good ol' football player. He didn't run as good as we thought he would. He and Jimmie Ward are real similar. But you've got to have a special role for him." Finished with 299 tackles (11 for loss), five picks and 19 passes defensed. "He'll make a team," another scout said. "He didn't time good but he might be a free safety." From Colton, Calif.
Berhe was used in a variety of roles that showed his versatility. Between slot cornerback, single-high safety and in-the-box safety, Berhe brings value to a defense that needs a selfless player.
His best plays came when he played zone while lined up as a slot cornerback. This position allowed him to read the quarterbacks eyes and decide to play the underneath receiver or backpedal and defend deeper routes. His efficiency in recognizing which route is the correct play is impressive, and this should translate to the NFL.
Has good closing speed when hes running towards the line of scrimmage. His short-area burst allows him to break up passes on curl routes and comebacks.
When hes in man coverage, Berhe shows a good trigger down, which is the transition from backpedaling to pivot, and following the receiver back to the ball.
There are instances where he doesnt locate the ball quickly, but hes alert enough to play the hands of the receiver, at least giving him the chance to score a knockdown and force an incompletion.
Very productive tackler throughout his career because he has good form and fundamentals. He can also knock the ball-carrier or receiver out from good, timed hits downfield.
Reads running gaps at the line of scrimmage very effectively, almost like a linebacker. He gets a lot of his tackles near the line of scrimmage for that reason.
Negatives
Lacks the size and frame to be as much of an impact at the line of scrimmage as he was in college. He struggled bringing down bigger athletes, and the NFL features many players bigger than Berhe.
His best long-term position is likely slot cornerback for a zone scheme. He reads quarterbacks' eyes well, but his speed is below average for a defensive back. Defensive coordinators will need to limit one-on-one opportunities for the offense to exploit his size and speed.
Struggles tracking the ball in coverage because he focuses on the receiver throughout the play. Since he plays the hands of the receiver well, he might get a fair share of deflections, but he misses opportunities for interceptions.
Gets grabby and will get called for pass interference penalties if he continues to fall behind receivers early in their routes. His technique and timing needs to improve.
Will resort to holding when in coverage and he feels beaten. Due to his size in coverage, keeping him near the line of scrimmage or in a set zone could be his best fit.

Overall
Nat Berhe was a key contributor and on-the-field leader for San Diego State throughout his career. As he enters the NFL, he might have to switch full time to slot cornerback as he develops his coverage technique, but he should be able to stick around the league as a special teams and depth player. especially this line "instinctive defender with a nose for the ball. Secondary leader. Reads and reacts quickly. Active and energetic -- terrific pursuit effort. Motor runs hot. Plays fast."
Sounds like a kid that plays faster on tape than he times in shorts. That's good.
Instinctive defender with a nose for the ball. Secondary leader. Reads and reacts quickly. Active and energetic -- terrific pursuit effort. Motor runs hot. Plays fast. Good balance and body control. Smooth pedal. Good ball reactions. Disguises coverages. Sells blitzes and baits quarterbacks (see vs. Fresno State's Derek Carr). Tough, confident and competitive.
Aggressive tackler. Plays with abandon. Flashes explosive striking ability. Lives and breathes football. Experienced, four-year starter with desirable makeup. Very likable personality.
2013: First-team All-Mountain West pick after leading his team in tackles (99). 2012: Second-team All-Mountain West selection after starting all 13 games and leading his team in tackles (94). 2011: Honorable mention All-Mountain West pick after starting all 13 games. 2010: Played in 12 games and started two. 2009: Redshirted.
Analysis
Strengths
Very good instincts -- has a nose for the ball. Reads and reacts quickly. Very active with great on-field energy and pursuit effort. Outstanding motor. Plays fast. Good balance and body control. Smooth pedal. Can man up tight ends and keep pace. Good ball reactions. Does a good job disguising coverages and selling the blitz -- baited Derek Carr into some bad and rushed throws. Tough competitor. Plays with confidence. Aggressive tackler. Sacrifices his body and sells out around piles. Flashes explosive striking ability. Lives and breathes football. Very likeable personality. Secondarly leader. Outstanding intangibles. Experienced, four-year starter.
Weaknesses
Cornerback size with short arms and small hands. Has a light frame with limited weight potential and could stand to get stronger. Plays a bit out of control and will miss some tackles in the open-field. Takes some bad angles. Leaks yards when he comes in high and has to grab and drag instead of driving through the ball carrier. Average production on the ball. Limited special-teams experience.
Bottom Line
Compactly built, highly competitive, active, energetic safety with a mixture of strong and free safety traits. Profiles like a solid backup and core special-teamer with makeup to push for a more prominent role.
-Nolan Nawrocki
heard of him. Like the report though as a tough football player. Special teamer maybe until he learns the safety position. You knew the Giants were taking a safety somewhere with Hill most likely done. Cooper Taylor may see some time as an OLB in packages maybe???
PROS: He has excellent speed. Nat Berhe can close on a ball carrier, and do it fast. He tackles through the man with the ball as well. Why? Because that is how you FINISH. You dont miss when you tackle through the guy. He seems to have excellent instincts as to where the ball is going as well, and he can, despite not a lot of interceptions, make a play on the ball when called upon to do so.
CONS: The biggest one to be is going to be the level of competition, not coming for a larger school that plays more highly regarded teams. Its hard to get a lot of cons from these tapes, so this time, I am going to give you the cons from his NFL combine profile.

Hi Nat. Have you spoken with any of your former SDSU teammates who have been through the draft process (Miles Burris, Ronnie Hillman and Ryan Lindley)? If so, what advice have they given you? Good luck with the draft, I'll be rooting for you.

He just told me that teams know a ball player when they see one and not to worry about the process, that the combine is for the fans and that when the draft comes around teams are doing what the need to win games.
But his combine footage looks horrible. Someone else said we drafted a small slow safety. He also seems to have hands of absolute stone, poor foot work, and even worse balance. Of course I'm basing this all off a 2 minute video on NFL.com from the combine, so....
To me, he looks faster on the field than I anticipate hell run on the track. On the field he makes a lot of plays and I think hes a guy that can be successful, Rang said. Theres only so many guys who have real instincts for the position, and that impresses.
I think he has a real chance of being drafted in the sixth or seventh round, mid to late Day 3.
Berhe (5-foot-10, 194 pounds) finished his SDSU career with 41 starts and 299 tackles and was a force at the Aztec safety position.
His two years as the starter at Aztec safety will pay off in the NFL, Rang said, because most teams are now on the lookout for versatile defensive backs who can play free safety or strong safety.
Berhes versatility, his intelligence, and his open field tackling skills will all make him more marketable.
Rang thinks Berhe will impress on the white board and thats where hell start to build some buzz.
Additionally, even though Berhe isnt very big physically, his open field tackling ability will help him out, Rang said. Hes a good football player. There are a lot of safeties in this class that are flashy athletes but dont tackle well.
Because he does, I think its coaches rather than scouts that are going to jump on him. Someone is going to give him a chance because of the consistency hes shown in his career.
Gotta say I'm disappointed, but completely ignorantly.
just hard to know, especially this late in the draft. We all want other players we know better. But there is a reason they have been passed over by the entire league, not just the Giants.
I do wish the Giants had taken Jensen or Lynch, but one may be around at the end of the fifth.
Berhe has excellent production and of course character. He has limitations, including his size, but Kiper just described him as a tackling machine, albeit with limited numbers.
He was constantly manned up and had great play and route recognition. He seems a little vulnerable in man coverage but plays smart. He does support in the run defense but he isn't an imposing force in the run game. However, he is always around the ball which is a great thing.
"Terrible measurables for that position, but I'll tell you how good of a player he is on the tape."
- makes reads quickly
- good ball skills
- constantly around the ball
- good at supporting the run
- loves hitting
- "tackling machine"
- he will spill his guts on the football field
- plays hard
I'm sorry I can't rely on "in Reese we trust." The Giants are forcing a theme in this draft of getting character and leadership while addressing needs. I get it and perhaps the Will Hill situation caused this change. But still, this guy is not fast, can't catch, and isn't that strong. Idk what the Giants are doing. Is this insurance for Stevie Brown? Or someone to play Deon Grant? Replacement for Will Hill?
I looked at a couple of minutes of his highlight reel and if someone had told me it was Will Hill from a distance, I might have believed it. The guy is a nasty hitter.

My only issue with the pick is that with another pick coming up relatively soon, I'm not sure they needed to take him with the first pick in the round.
But it's the 5th round, you're either taking players based on production with limited measurables or players with measurables and limited production.
This is turning out to be worst Giants draft in history
Is going to get some of these idiots pissed off. I can't even count how many times I have read this offseason that we don't want guys who are workout warriors. That we need to get good football players. Which we do and then people are bitching about their combine performance.
That scouting report claiming he has blazing speed is erroneous.. Lol. Thanks Dan. 4.71 40. My grandmother has better closing speed. But only on Sundays when we have Manicotti.
RE: This is turning out to be worst Giants draft in history
Fat fucking coach potatoes eating cheese doodles with not a penny on the line and no skin in the game go banana's, and I'm supposed to listen to you why again?
High character, smart, captain. After football he will join his family business. They run a non-profit group home for emotionally disturbed adults. That was mentioned on ESPN.

Picks? If we can't criticize, because we know nothing, doesn't that mean we can't praise either? Being a fan is an interactive experience. When legitimate scouting publications rank someone close to an UDFA, aren't we allowed to be puzzled when they're picked in the third and fifth rounds? Or should we just defer to management? The giants, and every other team, miss all the time. Clearly, it's not a science and up to some scrutiny? Some of the pro- every pick guys are significantly ruder and more obnoxious than the other side and are grown men that talk like children.

If you don't have enough self-awareness, despite an entire group of people pointing it out, to recognize just what an insufferable douchebag you are then I don't know what to tell you.
If I had my way they would have drafted an OL in the 2nd that can
play Tackle. This team is woefully thin at Tackle. Since they were going RB anyway, I would have preferred Tre Mason in the 3rd, then get your DT. I'm pretty speechless about this pick.
for ST with that type of heat seeking missile personality. His slow speed would get him killed in coverage. ST and backup duty only. Who knows whether we could have done better? Character and production are there. People, myself included, get locked into certain players, even this late, and get pissed when the FO passes over them for "unknowns."

This is a great pick.....Dumbo.
They are not drafting projects with good measurables
They are drafting high football IQ players who eat, sleep and breathe football. These are guys who will outwork a lot of the other prospects who have gotten by with just talent but who are lazy fucks. Guys the Giants have been drafting recently.

Plenty of publications have him as a 3-5.
Right. Like I said, it's not a science, or players would be ranked and assigned to teams based on an algorithm. But it doesn't mean there can't be criticism. And I'm not sure most people would consider the Giants home run hitters on the draft or infallible.

Woefully thin? There are 5 guys on the roster that can play tackle.
I don't know how fast he times but his video shows a very instinctive player who gets to the ball quickly and delivers a wallop. Seems like a real football player rather then a measurables only draft day fantasy.

Talking about the draft is fun, without the lunacy from both sides. Not sure that makes me a whiner. I'm a social worker and a mediator, trying to understand why people act more nutty than my clients about a sport.

Must be the shout down leader of the pom pom squad.
I don't think so. I think he may not have a high ceiling, but I wouldn't call it "low".He will be a solid rotational player that will probably stick, and that's about all you can ask out of a fifth rounder. Again, the Giants drafted a "football player" which is what all of the guys they got so far are, and leaders.gusy that don't have to be babysat and are self motivated. This guys lives and breathes football from what I've read and has great instincts, a nose for the ball and likes to hit and hits hard.So he's short, they'll stick him in the slot, BFD.He plays specials as well. They may switch him to corner.

We are in the 5th round of the draft? You are not going to get a surefire stud here. You are going to have to take risks at this point. You are going to see reaches here, especially when we only have 2 picks left. Obviously the Giants like the kid for reasons we may not know. There's no point in saying it was a stupid pick, in 3 years you might be able to say that. You just sound ignorant saying a 5th round pick is stupid because the Giants didn't draft the player you wanted them to.
I loved reading what you wrote. That is awesome. It shows me this kid wants to improve and will do what it takes to do just that. Again, how can you not love that?
was still on the board. So was Georgia tight end Arthur Lynch. I hope Nat Berhe works out better than those two because I would have taken either of them.
but everyone should take the time to watch. This kid plays to and through the ball. He will not stop if he is the first or the fourth to the ball until the whistle is blown. He seems to love to hit. His game speed looks good because he seems to anticipate very well. He's a hitter. He may be a flyer or he may be a steal. He would not be the first 5th rounder to be a very good football player. I like this pick at round 5.
I watched his film and reminds me a lot of Shamarko Thomas at Syracuse 2 years ago. Similar size and build with good tackling technique and willing to mix it up and always around the ball. Looks like a player and good insurance. I wanted Thomas for the Giants, so am happy with someone who could turn out to be quite similar.
If you're not a track guy, starting to run from that position can be very awkward and cost you valuable tenths of a second. Look at the deeper picture please. Kid had a great broad and vert jump so the problem isn't his quicks or explosion.

I like the picks. Forget the Combine T-shirt All-American stars. You can't put a combine number on heart either.

The Giants are strong on having players with high charachtor and good morals but it seems every pick this year is concentrating more on their leadership ability and how smart they are over performance much more than usual. The only pick they made so far that I've heard of before was Odel but I don't watch much college football.
This guy is insurance against a possible Will Hill suspension, a probable Cooper Taylor injury, and the possibility that Stevie Brown has some issues returning from the injury.
A reach when the guy is projected as a 7th rounder or udfa.
According to whom? There's not one of the self-appointed "experts" that really knows jack about the prospects. Hell, take any random 10 draft pubs and I'll wager that there are going to be far more similarities than differences.
Shit, they're all talking to the same people, including each other, and then tweaking the slightest bit to provide a surface gloss of "difference/knowledge/acumen" et cetera.
Jimmy Ward went first round, number 30, to the 49ers.
To be honest, probably not a lot of difference between Berhe and Ward. Anybody who loves that pick and hates Berhe in the 5th has a friggin screw loose.
live. I haven't watched him on TV. I haven't met with him, worked him out, or broken down his film to see what his potential upside or and how he fits what our team wants to do.
But I threw the remote because I never heard of him so it must be a reach.
on draft..me included. You have to admit, this draft is bad.. As a fan of this team, I deeply care who gets drafted and I have made it clear in previous posts this draft exemplifies giants miss Gettleman.
Please let all people post there opinions so long as there are no naughty words
But he'll be a fan favorite if you like effort, tenacity and aggression. He plays way faster than he times, he feet go a hundred miles an hour and he breaks down and accelerates well. If he was 6-1 and a touch faster he's a 2nd rounder. He's too aggressive at times but he should be a demon on special teams, I can see him being a great gunner.
He's one of those guys who the more you watch, the more you see, he really really grows on you. He'll have trouble with numbers we have Rolle, Hill, Brown, Demps, Cooper but he'll be hard to cut once he shows his ST ability. I'm rooting for him, I really really like the way he plays football.
Q: What were your expectations here in the draft? What were you being told about where you thought you would be going?
A: You hear multiple things from different teams. I heard from the Steelers that if I was available in the third round they would get me in the third or the fourth. I heard fourth of fifth. It was all in the same area. I mostly heard fourth or fifth.
So the Steelers were saying third or fourth.. He was hearing fourth or fifth.. but the GIANTS somehow had it wrong.. ok...
I know they're highlights, but he seems to do a couple of things very well besides the big hits. One is avoiding traffic - he has quick lateral movement and seems to avoid blocks well. The other is reading where the play is going.
And yes, I've seen him play. At the very least, this guy is going to be a very good,if not great, special teams player. Also, I think he will be one of the outside guys blocking on punts which we has been a problem for us.Our punt returners never seem to have any room after the catch. Behre is extremely physical. I don't know if we really needed another safety but I think he's going to contribute.
I watched every game...probably nearly every game of his career at State...he's a player. The only problem with drafting him is he couldn't bring his fullback with him to the team. (Jets picked him up as a UFDA, Chad Young, you'll hear his name again).
I put down Mathieu's weight by mistake. 200 is still too small for LB tho. Taylor is the S/LB hybrid on the team and he's a way bigger guy. Doesn't hit like Berhe, tho
7-FA

Sounds like a kid that plays faster on tape than he times in shorts. That's good.

CONS: The biggest one to be is going to be the level of competition, not coming for a larger school that plays more highly regarded teams. Its hard to get a lot of cons from these tapes, so this time, I am going to give you the cons from his NFL combine profile.

I am a Unlv alumnus and I've seen him play. Very tough, physical, undersized though..

Are you telling me you know for a fact they could've traded down? Oh, you cant? That's what I thought. This isnt fucking Madden.
Just from watching his combine workout, I noticed he does move pretty well and has fluid hips...but goodness his hands might as well be frying pans.

He just told me that teams know a ball player when they see one and not to worry about the process, that the combine is for the fans and that when the draft comes around teams are doing what the need to win games.
OMG, Jeriz not readin teh internetz scowtin repotz!
Be careful. The pom pom squad will come and try to shout you down.
I just question if he is more than a role player/special teamer and if I was taking a role player I would prefer a pass rusher
I do wish the Giants had taken Jensen or Lynch, but one may be around at the end of the fifth.
Berhe has excellent production and of course character. He has limitations, including his size, but Kiper just described him as a tackling machine, albeit with limited numbers.

- makes reads quickly
- good ball skills
- constantly around the ball
- good at supporting the run
- loves hitting
- "tackling machine"
- he will spill his guts on the football field
- plays hard
I hope I'm wrong, but this draft blows!

Rich, you've been disgusted by this entire draft. Do yourself a favor and take a walk...enjoy the day.
Seems like he might be a special teams contributor initially.

My only issue with the pick is that with another pick coming up relatively soon, I'm not sure they needed to take him with the first pick in the round.
But it's the 5th round, you're either taking players based on production with limited measurables or players with measurables and limited production.
Of him
"Dynamic Player With Better Ability Than Size, But His Effort And Versatility Are Enough To Keep Him Around".
Give him a chance.
Seriously, they scout these people and they're capable. He likely gives them something different that they can use.
And you know this how? They haven't even had 1 practice yet.

The fact that you hate his draft makes me think we've hit a home run on each pick.
#NYG SS, 5th round pick RT @NatBerhe: I'm going to give everything I got to the @Giants and everybody who passed on me...I'm coming."
A ST player is a contributor.
at safety we don't need an early contributor with rolle, brown, demps, hill(susp?) and taylor already on the roster
Plenty of publications have him as a 3-5.
Of him
Then he doesn't watch MWC ball. Guys one of the best players in the conference.

If I had my way they would have drafted an OL in the 2nd that can
play Tackle. This team is woefully thin at Tackle. Since they were going RB anyway, I would have preferred Tre Mason in the 3rd, then get your DT. I'm pretty speechless about this pick.

Right. Like I said, it's not a science, or players would be ranked and assigned to teams based on an algorithm. But it doesn't mean there can't be criticism. And I'm not sure most people would consider the Giants home run hitters on the draft or infallible.
He is coming to a place where they can find. A lot of candidates for there home
I'm whining? So how should the board behave?

Ebenezer Samuel @ebenezersamuel 44s
Nat Berhe says his instincts are his best quality. Chicks will dig this too: "I have great eyes."
You just alienated half of your constituents here with this comment. Ha
I was saying the same thing. :|
Talking about the draft is fun, without the lunacy from both sides. Not sure that makes me a whiner. I'm a social worker and a mediator, trying to understand why people act more nutty than my clients about a sport.
Nat Berhe played the hybrid LB/S position at San Diego State. Same position coaches at New Mexico State developed for Brian Urlacher #nyg
Ebenezer Samuel @ebenezersamuel 5s
Some viewed Berhe as a strong safety, nickel and free safety. Giants dug three-safety look a few years ago. Have since reloaded a LB though.
Conor Orr @ConorTOrr 27s
Berhe played the same position as Brian Urlacher in college. A hybrid linebacker-safety. Feels like he can play Nickel, free and strong.
Agreed. He's skinny but a lot like Will Hill when he hits the ball carrier there's a big collision and they go down immediately.

In what world have the giants "reloaded" at LB?
It has more to do with people seeing BIG SEXY NAMES on the board still and the Giants not taking those BIG SEXY NAMES because everybody knows BIG SEXY NAMES always make it in the NFL.
