Played all over USC's defense and did not object. Can rush the passer. Will start on special teams but has a lot of upside when he can focus on one position
Analysis
Strengths
Well-proportioned, muscular build. Generally plays on his feet. Can drop into short zones. Good tackler. Has played outside linebacker, middle linebacker and defensive end. Smart and tough. Team captain with outstanding intangibles, including leadership traits and a professional approach.
Weaknesses
Lacks ideal body length and has small hands. Average athletic ability. Dull get-off. Limited explosion and power. Needs to cultivate pass-rush moves. Does not provide enough resistance against the run. Still developing instincts. Non-explosive athlete with pedestrian agility, as evidenced by poor 30-inch vertical and 7.25-second three-cone marks.
Draft Projection
Round 7-Priority free agent
Bottom Line
A well-put-together standup linebacker with NFL bloodlines, Kennard's intangibles outdistance his physical traits, as he lacks the juice to consistently heat up the edge in the pros. Devon Kennard - ( New Window )
Pendergast's 3-4 scheme in 2013, when he started all 14 games and had 60 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks with four pass breakups. Team captain had the top GPA on the team and was honored as USC's Most Inspirational Player and Co-Lifter of the Year.
I'm not thrilled about this pick (or the Berhe pick, though I like that one better) based on the little information I have. It seems like there were better players with more recognizable names available and thus I'm a bit perturbed. I don't know what the hell I'm talking about though, but listen to me anyway.
Front office must really think that there was something rotten on the team last year. Or super worried about the loss of some leaders -- Tuck, Diehl (?).
Maybe we should get Reese on here to answer for these picks!
A lot. Played DE, OLB and MLB at USC. As with every player we have drafted he was a captain. Had 60 tackles, 13 TFL, 9 sacks and 4 pass deflection last season.
Wtf??? Come on! This is ridiculous. The Giants blew this draft on this character/team leadership bs. It's not the case that because you are a team captain, your a great player or necessarily will be a team leader at the pro level. Michael Strahan was not seen as a team leader when drafted but became one. Last year Tuck and Eli were team captains and didn't mean a hill of beans. The Giants have passed on talent in pursuit of this character/team leadership crap that cannot be denied.
This draft was a needs draft not a BPA draft at all. It explains all the reaches they have made. Many of these picks could have been secured trading down and accumulating picks for this year or the next! No imagination on the part of management. This blows. I hope these players pan out because I'm a fan, but I'm not holding my breath.
Captain stuff too seriously. There's a lot of captains on some of these college teams. Stands to reason that an upperclassmen with NFL potential likely to get picked as captain.
hasn't been trolling for years and gets a pass because he drags an eagle around the parking lot and chats up BBI tailgaters. That must give him a license to troll because he has gotten away with it for years and I guess will continue to get away with it as long as he likes
"Devon Kennard | OLB, Southern California
Kennard is an underrated athlete with good diagnostics and the versatility to line up at multiple positions along the front seven, but has struggled to stay healthy in his career at USC. Could be a nice edge-rusher at the next level if he's able to prove durable.

I hope Rich chokes on the next dick he sucks, which should be in the next five to ten minutes.

I had the same thought.
I wonder if TC has been complaining about having to coach prospects who are athletically gifted but lack study habits, work ethic and dedication. If so, he's getting enough rope to hang himself out of this draft.

Nonsense. I'm sure the beatings with a pillowcase full of nickels was much worse.
you can't beat someone with a pillowcase full of nickels, it's too heavy, and the pillowcase splits. You can, however, tie them to a tree and slap them with and old nasty funky wore out sock stuffed with manure. It actually works better when it rips.
this is the greatest, most uncomfortable college player interview i've ever seen.
Forgot my shirt - ( New Window )
Hilarious.
Not sure what people expect in the draft. Everybody can't believe that their "favorites" haven't been selected, and then get angry when the Giants pass them up. The entire league has passed them up. Last year it was Reddick and Bailiey. This year maybe Richardson and Jensen.
The sixth round pick will almost certainly be someone we haven't heard of.
Good size, major program. But I don't like that he's already had 4 significant injuries. Someone said he fills a need. He only fills a need if he makes the team. I'll settle for him being good enough to knock another LB off the roster.
..while he was dragging a stupid Eagle and he was a nice guy, so..
Anyway... Kennard on tape doesn't seem to really have much burst. The versatility is nice though and it seems apparent they're looking for character guys.
This year they drafted players who have produced through their college careers and can play vs guys who look all world with measurements but really can't play
Every player this draft has proven results and has played multiple years
The only one making these picks ? I think not. Coughlin and the rest of the staff has some say so as well. Who was Ahmad Bradshaw before we drafted him ? Who was Brandon Jacobs before we drafted him ? Everybody want those sexy ass picks. But that's not the Giants style. Get over it
Look like potentially good
Players but you wonder if
They even get drafted or at
Least lower than we took them.
We could have had more
higher valued players
And took these guys later.
I thought mara wanted more
Nfl ready players and
Less prospects. ...
Reese put his ne k out
This simple statement is a masterpiece. It's seldom that you come across a statement so dismissive, yet so compact. In the space of five non-complex words, we find that this player is not only a dreaded "Tweener," he also has a "history of injuries."
In other, less eloquent words, he's a gimp (injuries), and he doesn't really fit any role on an NFL team. Devastating!
My compliments, sir!
Well Bradshaw was a very productive beast at Marshall, over 3
full seasons with plenty of carries and pass receptions too.
But you're following something brought up by Dane above. While people want to rip Reese and Ross for the selections, I think the whole movement this year to "high character" guys that can contribute early rather than roster space eaters with high potential that never do shit (read, Marvin Austin etc, in here) is most definitely NOT JR and Ross alone. Maybe not even mostly them.
I think it's team wide throughout the FO; it certainly includes TC's voice, maybe Fewell's too, and almost surely the Maras and Tischs or let's just say "ownership."
I'm not sure how much of this movement was fomented by a "rotten" locker room, or worry about the loss of guys like Tuck and DD, or maybe a response to the FA system which makes a team "pay double" for taking high upside (but maybe immature) athletically gifted players that need 1-3 years of maturation/coaching to be productive.
But this smells like a very conscious, reasoned and well thought out approach to the team's current situation personnel-wise and also the way of the league re FA...
and some speed, at a position of need, played in a major program, multiple position possibility if need be, slid only because of injuries.
Our Kam Chancellor?
Who would want that?

My man @DevonKennard42 just got drafted into a great organization. Hard worker with great character, he'll be a giant for a while!

just doesn't scream 4-3 LB to me. seems a little slow and i'd prefer someone with more speed in today's NFL. glad he has intangibles but I don't see the positives about this pick.
What a depressing day. So many very good players we passed on in each
I just want football players not yes guy Choir Boys
Gimme a Vontaze Burfict before Some boot licker .
Why No TE ....?
Did we not just ink like 10 defensive back before
the Draft . Hope I am Dead Wrong with the 1st pick
But you win in the Trenches Where we lost 3 starters
in the past 2 years on Defense if Bromely doesnt
show early This Draft could really start to stink .
Will Beatty scares me .

my concerns are identical... however, damn it would be pretty awesome if it all worked out i.e. we sign a TE in FA, beatty bounces back... and new WR does it this year.

Cut the crap.
Probably fits as a SAM.
I wonder if he's pegged for whatever role JR envisioned for O'Brien Schofield.

You're clueless when it comes to the draft
You nailed it! Fewer projects, more production;
Higher caliber individuals and players

Tell the truth, Donald, You're either a Dallas or Jets fan trying to get the gears grinding on BBI. You sure as fuck ain't no Giants fan!
Kennard says the Giants saw him as a SAM linebacker in their 4-3.
dude, leave football out of it - you have some problems. I guess we already knew that.
