A perspective on Bromley from one of BBIs most respected

Big Blue '56 : 5/11/2014 8:54 am
dorgan, was a HC for more years than many of you have probably been alive. His perspectives have always been treasured, anticipated and extremely respected..I wish he posted more..Out of my deep respect for the man, I sent an email to determine if posting his perspectives sat well with him. He's fine with it..

about 45 minutes from SU so I follow them every year even when they stink. I would guess I've seen Bromley play 10-15 times over the past two years.
I thought he was the best player on the team by quite a bit.

He does draw a lot of double teams and had a fair percentage of incidents where he got a wash or won the battle against the double. That's a very good thing.

When you are doubled a high percentage of the time, it wears on you both physically and emotionally.
A lot of DTs start to lower their effort because they know they can't win.
I never saw him do that. That's another very good thing.
He keeps on plugging.

I can't compare his value to the available OL at the time because I was unfamiliar with quite a few of them, so I have
little opinion of the pick other than I think he's a legitimate pro DT

great sources of INSIDE information.
They had two players that have seen this kid play and practiced against him.
Our first draft choice last year had inside information about this kid and should have had an input. Also the Giants drafted a QuarterBack that practiced against him.
If scouting staff did NOT use that information - SHAME ON THEM.
If they did we probably have a good player

Thanks for the post, I had missed that comment by Dorgan and it is good to read. A lot better than he is "very undersized & lacks power" or "slow, out of shape, with poor balance & no instincts" that we heard from a couple of other posters.
Quick question if Dorgan is one of our

Every player in this draft has a few bad cut ups.

Reese has been criticized, maybe rightly so, for too much focus on measurables rather than actual on-the-field production. It worked out fine with JPP but not for the "JPP of tight ends" was well as others, e.g., Sintim, Barden. The emphasis seems to have shifted to kids who have been productive players. Will be interesting to see the results. Fwiw, I could care less if, for example, a kid like Bromley is picked in the 3rd or the 5th. Let's see of he's a player.

Not sure what you mean here. Sintim and Barden were Extremely productive in college--I think Barden might have even led the nation in touchdowns. And Sintim had more than 10 sacks and more than 12 tackle for loss if I recall correctly.
Maybe Sintim and Barden aren't the best examples.
clatterbuck : 5/11/2014 4:27 pm : link
Adrien Robinson, Austin, Cooper Taylor, Brewer, Scott, etc. Sintim was a project. Maybe there just isn't time anymore to turn a college DE into a 4-3 LB, despite size, 40 time. Seems Giants this time tried to find guys who stayed on the field and were productive players.
Another thing to consider
Franz69 : 5/11/2014 5:42 pm : link
Bromley was not exactly playing on a Murderer's Row D-Line at Syracuse. This year and last year, not only was he the best player by a mile, but very little experienced talent or depth at DT and DE. Much easier to devote attention to him by opposing offenses and he rarely got a breather. Our depth at DT was pretty much non-existent, due to graduation, suspension and injury.
A bit more perspective
Franz69 : 5/11/2014 5:54 pm : link
Bromley had more sacks this past season than our other three D-Line starters combined.

Agree a player who has his numbers and exposure who is not invited to the combine is a Reach....

Check your facts he was invited to the Combine. Ran well @ 306#(5.06). Decent strength for a long armed guy(26 reps). Explosion testing was average(33.5VJ/8'10BJ) and agility testing(7.92TC) wasn't impressive.
I am warming to this guy

TMS, you know who looked awesome at the Combine?

Did you happen to watch the video of his highlights I linked when he was drafted? I though he looked good, I can see him ending up really helping this team at some point.

Perhaps you can direct them to the cheap motel you use for your hookups with Boyhart and other media members

Once I told him the Doc I was a pitcher and not a catcher, he lost interest.

at your ages, I'd have thought you'd both be happy just to be put in the game.
still the same bullshit about Sintim
Greg from LI : 5/12/2014 12:38 pm : link
Sintim was an awesome player at UVA. Led the nation in sacks by a linebacker with 11. Two-time all-ACC, was once the ACC freshman of the year.

The issue with Sintim is that he was a 3-4 pass-rushing LB and the Giants wanted him to play 4-3 SAM and cover TEs.
Here is what I put in the BBI mock draft
Amtoft : 5/12/2014 3:32 pm : link
DT Jay Bromley Syracuse... Ran a 5.03 and benched 26 times at 306lbs. Quick off the snap for a guy over 300lbs. Was hitting gaps very nicely and splitting double teams. Didn't just pad stats against weak teams getting 2 sacks against Clemson, 1 against Florida State, and 1 in his bowl game. Had 10 sacks on the year. Not as strong against the run, but in the 7th a great value get here.
