What is up with the tackle position?

SMitch2 : 5/11/2014 5:29 pm
To start off, I like the top half of our draft. all the picks make sense and seem to be solid players. I like the production on all. But looking at our rosters depth chart, the OT position is frightening. I can't get that JAllen sack out of my head -- Beaty was atrocious at times and now coming off an injury -- and there's no one behind him. Pugh was great, but again an injury and we have nothing. I'm shocked we didn't select anyone in the last 3 picks nor pick up any free agents. I pray they try to swing a trade or get some more free agents in here, because our lack of players are scary.
Brown started 13 ames at left tackle for the Saints

Nothing behind Beatty?
Brown provides depth.
nyGIANT90 : 5/11/2014 5:46 pm : link
And Brewer is back there if they really need help

But I agree with the post overall.

One injury (knock on wood) and things are scary.

I'm hoping for a late solid veteran signing before seasons end.
I think Brown starts

even if Beatty is "healthy." There was a lot of positive buzz in Saints camp about him through camp and preseason last year. IIRC, a lot to the tune of the Saints not missing Bushrod. He had a steady season before getting dismantled by Robert Quinn. A lot of OTs did against Quinn.

That's not a ringing endorsement of Brown, but I saw Beatty get his shit pushed in enough before he was injured to have my doubts about his ability.
would that be the J Allen sack
HomerJones45 : 5/11/2014 5:58 pm : link
where Beatty had him completely locked up and Manning couldn't take one step up? I think that play was on the interior of the line.

not a chance
It's
AcidTest : 5/11/2014 6:01 pm : link
a concern:

Beatty: coming off a broken leg, and was terrible in 2013.
Brown: started 13 games for the Saints, but was benched for bad play near the end of the year, and was ultimately released.
Pugh: played LT in college, but has never done it in the NFL.

Brewer isn't playing LT. He only makes the team IMO if we are decimated by injuries. Another of Jerry's projects that I think we're getting away from in the draft. Goodin was actually decent at LT IIRC. He'd probably get the call if something happened to Beatty and/or Brown.
brown vs beatty
aquidneck : 5/11/2014 6:04 pm : link
ain't terrible. But relying on either guy by himself is kinda terrifying.

Not sure what we'll get and who we got behind 3 guys (barring injury God forbid) almost guaranteed to make our roster.
The Jared Allen sack.
Klaatu : 5/11/2014 6:12 pm : link
Judge for yourself. Looks to me that Diehl ran by Eli, brushed his arm, and effectively stopped him from moving to his left.

Check that - moving to his right.

....
what happened to Brown
bc4life : 5/11/2014 6:16 pm : link
2nd round pick, starter - then benched and released ?

What went wrong and is it fixable?

Don't know what you were seeing, but Diehl was nowhere near Eli.
Schwartz, Brown, and Jerry have started NFL games at tackle.
Jupiter : 5/11/2014 6:18 pm : link
and Jerry was a starting guard in 2013.

No one drafted this week has even played in an NFL game.

With the versatility of the O-Linemen the Giants have, I think they can put a better line than last year on the field, even if Snee can't make it back and Beatty is PUP.

Don't forget free agency after June 1.

Unfortunate
Sy'56 : 5/11/2014 6:24 pm : link
that NYG couldn't find the value over the weekend at OT. I don't fault them because I couldn't find it anywhere either. My worst case heading in to the offseason is they are putting all their eggs in the Beatty basket appears to come true.
I believe Pugh will get some work at LT during the preseason
Blue21 : 5/11/2014 6:28 pm : link
also.
one thing will help Beatty
bc4life : 5/11/2014 6:29 pm : link
Continuity on the OLine - Snee and Baas had a history of getting dinged up over the past few years. Just having 5 solid OL start and play together consistently as a unit will be better than the musical chairs rotation they had last year.
If Beatty isn't ready by training camp and the preseason

Who is the most likely starter?

Look again...right before Allen makes his move to grab Eli...Diehl was up on the line, nobody to block, so he turns and runs back to help Pugh, but in doing so he runs by Eli (and I think brushes his right arm) at the same time Eli was about to sidestep to his right to avoid Allen.
Reese and company all in with Beatty.
Red Dog : 5/11/2014 7:01 pm : link
Reese and company are all in with Beatty. With the contract Beatty got, they almost have to be all in with him, at least for this year, because the cost of cutting him would be prohibitive.

One of the messages from passing on Zack Martin in the first is that they feel that Beatty is going to be able to get the job done, and that Brown will be able to do it if for some reason Beatty can't.

And if that all goes to hell, they still have Pugh, John Jerry (who has played some OLT for Miami), and Goodin (who played OLT in college and who filled in very adequately after Beatty got hurt at the end of last season) - assuming the last two make the 53-man roster - to plug in.

So it's not surprising that they didn't draft an OT over the weekend.

Maybe next year.

Someone tell me when Beattys leg
Blue Blood : 5/11/2014 7:06 pm : link
which apparently must have fallen completely off at the knee and was reattached with duct tape and twine will be healed..

He broke a leg people.. thats like 8-10 weeks..

The voice of reason from an eminently reasonable poster.
Beatty should be better this year…..
Simms11 : 5/11/2014 7:31 pm : link
he'll have Schwartz next to him and may get more TE help from Davis this year too. Additionally, I think he'll be reenergized to do well as he knows that the GIants could get rid of him after next year. I also think he'll be stronger in his legs after his rehab and weight training. The leg could be a blessing in disguise. I also think a short, quick passing game will help the line as they won't have to hold their blocks as long either. Beatty will be fine as long as he's back on the field for camp IMO. Not so sure Brown is the answer although he does have decent LT experience. Maybe this system will enhance his play, as well. Time will tell.
Zelmo & Charley
RetroJint : 5/11/2014 7:33 pm : link
is all that stands between Eli & the edge rushing horde.....Yikes. A broken leg can mend but how about a broken will? Brown is relatively new to the position & he is athletic but that Saint staff aren't exactly jabronis. Note to self: Pugh is versatile but he can't play 2 positions at once .
That seems a lot worse when I watched the game
old timer : 5/11/2014 7:57 pm : link
That was actually a decent pocket. Eli had plenty of room to slide to his right.

They paid Beatty they need to give him the shot. If he fails I hope they are quick to put Pugh in at LT. We may never have a chance at a 1st round tackle again. I know Pugh is developing at RT but Pettigout and Diehl followed the same career path. Hopefully Pugh does the same as a RT is easier to find then a franchise LT. But best case is Beatty rebounds and we're set. Lewan has bust risk and they must have viewed Martin as a guard only. Matthews would have been ideal but never happening.

nyGiant90...
M.S. : 5/11/2014 9:29 pm : link
...why even mention Brewer, unless you just want to remind us how inept our GM has been in drafting offensive linemen.
I think that Pugh can play LT, and if the worst happened
yatqb : 5/11/2014 9:58 pm : link
and neither Beatty nor Brown could hold the fort Schwartz could play RT and Jerry, Mosley or Herman LG. It's not ideal, but how many teams have backup LTs that are excellent?

Martin would have solved the problem, but then we wouldn't have a potential game changer at WR in Beckham. Can't have everything.

I so wanted Juwuan James in the 2nd, which would have allowed us the flexibility to move Pugh to LT if the need arose, but he went at 19 after having been considered a 3rd rounder a few months ago. That kid would have been great for us. But then we'd have needed a C at a later stage of the draft...musical chairs.
