Coughlin: Robinson and Donnell Have Looked Really Good

Obviously it is really early.

If guess they look good catching passes and

running routes. I'm reading Eli is throwing, I'm assuming someone is on the receiving end
so are we blaming Robinson for getting hurt now?
mort christenson : 5/12/2014 8:08 pm : link
Like it was some type of personal fault? Gotta love the "elite" and "smarter" Giants fans here on BBI.
TC did mention that 2 TE went off the board after their 2nd pick
George from PA : 5/12/2014 8:10 pm : link
So.....
TC did mention that 2 TE went off the board after their 2nd pick
Bill in UT : 5/12/2014 8:14 pm : link
Yeah, and was it a surprise that those guys went in Rd. 2? If the Giants really wanted a TE they would have used their 2nd pick to get one. or their 3rd. It's not real hard to figure out that TE was not a NYG priority.
This tight end situation is unbelievable
ghost718 : 5/12/2014 8:53 pm : link
Even if you understand what's going on,it still is

Jerry is gonna be swimming with Prince and the Polar Bears
I think Donnell
RicFlair : 5/12/2014 9:00 pm : link
will end up above Robinson on the depth chart.
So damn annoying
mrvax : 5/12/2014 9:01 pm : link
when certain players are always injured. Giants pissed away 4 years on another TE, Beckem (sp).

I've made the comparison a few times
wigs in nyc : 5/12/2014 9:04 pm : link
but this reminds greatly of how they approached TE going into 2011.

Now, they have gone after Sefarian-Jenkins, and it remains to be seen if they will go after Finley- but the last time the position was this neglected we unearthed Ballard, and Beckum made a huge catch in the playoffs.

Gotta just hope and pray that Robinson, Donnell, Fells, and Grimble have more to show.
You also have to take into consideration that Macadoo
bradshaw44 : 5/12/2014 9:23 pm : link
is a former TE coach, and he put in a new system. This may very well be a good situation for Robinson and Donnell to Flourish.

So does the new system feature underachievers who can't catch, block or stay healthy?

Of course TC said our TE's
suburbanite : 5/12/2014 9:47 pm : link
look good. We didn't get the TE we wanted in the draft and all we have are the ones we had on the roster previously....what is TC supposed to say on the FAN...our TE's suck balls?
Had to laugh
bceagle05 : 5/12/2014 9:47 pm : link
when Tom talked about everyone expecting Eli to be Otto Graham when he first got here. TC's dating himself a bit with that one.
So one of at least two things can be going on.
manh george : 5/12/2014 9:47 pm : link
1) We whiffed on tight ends in the draft; or

2) Having Robinson and Donnell look good, the draft team concluded that there wasn't a need to take a TE well above his
appropriate draft round, and therefore they could fpcus on positions offering better value.

I have no idea which is the case. Do you?

I think we all are holding our collective breaths knowing we didn't draft a tight end hoping the guys we have are sufficient. This news is a good start.

Coughlin says expectations for Eli have been sky-high "ever since he walked in the door and people expected him to be another Otto Graham."
Really good for Robinson and Donnell?

For Robinson to flourish, he'll have to stay on the field for more than 20 seconds, which is something he hasn't done in two years to date.
Why shouldn't they look good?
RetroJint : 5/12/2014 10:12 pm : link
They're young, athletic , in a controlled environment where they know what everyone is going to do. There is no contact. Defenders won't show up where they are not supposed to be. They get free releases from the line. They know they can catch the ball without getting nailed. Coughlin's opinion of them means something to me. Still the absolute worse that he'll say about the player is that " he's showing some good things." In the summer that assessment is usually the harbinger of a cut. I hope these guys come on this year in a 1-2 package to rival Bavaro-Mowatt & Shockey-Cianti. But right now it's just hope.

in camp last year. Big, fast , fluid, pass catcher. Couldn't get a handle on him as far as blocking, but he looked like a nice target out there. I hope he breaks out this year.

Agreed Greg. But I never even heard of him having good practices. So I hope this helps him.
at this point your looking at stuff
Blue Blood : 5/12/2014 10:43 pm : link
are they in shape..
are they completing the workouts..
are they sticking to the nutrition plan..
what is their BMI.. is it where it needs to be...
how are they processing the new offense..
how are they in the meeting room.. are they grasping the responsibilities..

those are things that will matter come training camp which starts early for the Giants..
I doubt Coughlin remembers Graham's great rookie year.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/12/2014 11:06 pm : link
When Graham played his first NFL game, Tommy Coughlin was six days old.

Have they been on a football field? They certainly haven't had a contact drill. Today they took physicals and sat in a classroom. Listening to interviews with TC or JR or Ross is on a par with listening to a politician.

I guess Coughlin thought they looked good at their physicals.

not that there is anything wrong with that...

Oh, good. That makes it OK to complain about everything constantly.
There was a time in the NFL when it was common for players
steve in ky : 5/13/2014 10:41 am : link
to mostly sit and learn for their first couple of seasons. Some players do take more time and just the fact that a player doesn't his the ground running his first season doesn't mean he still can't have it all click for him at a later point.

@davidrsoffer Not saying Robinson's the only option, but I'm not going to dismiss him as an option just yet.

Art Stapleton ‏@art_stapleton 13m
Obviously Prince was first-round investment + Robinson is a fourth rounder, but fact remains: he's going to get make-or-break chance. #NYG

Art Stapleton ‏@art_stapleton 14m
If I recall, some #NYG fans bailed on Prince Amukamara heading into 3rd year b/c he could not stay on field. Saying same re: Adrien Robinson

The comments about Robinson are beyond belief
cosmicj : 5/13/2014 11:26 am : link
This guy was drafted as a developmental project and basically sat on the bench learning his role in 2012, just as expected. In 2013, he suffered an apparently serious foot injury late in training camp, ruining his season. This looks to be the first serious injury Robinson suffered in his entire career.

Given this background and history, why exactly is he being derided constantly and written off?
A couple things
Reale01 : 5/13/2014 12:14 pm : link
First - When they threw to Robinson - he caught the ball. Same with Donald. They did not get an opportunity to play much with Eli in pre-season. Eli did not trust them. They did not play much and when they did they did not get many targets.

They need to get more reps in practice and pre-season and then we will see what they can or cannot do.

Lighten up! They can look good running patterns and catching the ball by showing agility, speed, and hands. Also by being in shape and grasping the offense. Catching the ball in a crowd and blocking requires contact. The ability to read, separate, and get open requires a defense.

Pascoe being gone is a BIG plus as he will not steal reps from the younger guys.

after failing to add a significant talent to the position...
raever : 5/13/2014 1:23 pm : link
...both in free agency and the draft what are they going to say. Robinson and Donnell look bad?
so both packers snd giants aversge about 60
aquidneck : 5/13/2014 1:51 pm : link
catches a year from the TE position over the past few seasons. None of the guys on our roster will be asked to do that by themselves. If they learn their roles and block well, 50 catches from the group will likely be enough.

Let our WRs carry the load.

Myself, I have honestly never seen anything like that on any level of football.... This guy was practically snacking with the fans! Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't he do it at a home game? With the painted endzones.... He couldn't see the color change???? Then there was the game where he let a turf monster get him, causing the Manning/Coughlin double fist pump of frustration. That was amusing.... So he has that going for him.

Bottom line, I am going to have to see him take his head out of his butt hole in some preseason games before I trust Donnell again...
That Donnell play running thru the back of the endzone

Ironically it was the exact opposite Very early on relatively speaking while of course he did some but Eric didn't really post all that terribly much on Pete's Corner. He responded more to letters to the Editor but really the corner forum was left to the us RifRaf to talk argue and police ourselves.
Another thing Coughlin mentioned was that Mario Manningham
BlueLou : 5/14/2014 4:43 pm : link
had gained weight and filled out with muscle since he departed the Giants and returned. Coughlin said Mario "looked good at 195 lbs and his body has matured."

Although MM still isn't 100 % re his knee and running routes.

Arcs and I both noticed that Mario looked significantly bigger in his upper body from a photo a few weeks ago...
This is the make or break year for Robinson IMO
