Finally cleared to play, Jermichael Finley will visit on Friday a team that didn't want to be named (hello, Patriots)
this kid to get back out there. I've never been one to join the concussions conversation with reference to the NFL, but this guy's situation was a scary one. Sincerely hope the best for him regardless of where he takes his talents.
I don't understand the outcry on BBI to sign this guy. I get that he was in the Packers system and has nice athletic ability, but he's just never been very good. Then again, the same people clamoring for Finley are likely the same ones that think the Giants are doomed because we don't actively have a plus TE on the roster.
and they should, then go for it. How anybody wouldn't want this guy for a year after looking at our tight ends just baffles me. If he's healthy and plays pretty well, he'll earn himself a nice contract next year. If he can't stay healthy, then oh well. They would just be back to where they are currently and it wouldn't hurt the cap long term.

Maybe some of us saw how bad the TE's sucked last year and realize the position still hasn't been upgraded?
Which TE on this roster do you have any confidence in right now?
I'd love to know what you think of the Giants' current TEs. Yes, he drops too many balls but at the same time he stretches the field and makes a defender cover him, something that we are missing.
It has nothing to do with name recognition. And Victor Cruz drops passes, too.
If you guys are confident in Adrien Robinson not only staying healthy, but being productive, Larry Donnell, Kellen Davis and a UDFA (Grimble), god bless you.. I sure am not
RE: If they have the money for a 1 or 2 year deal,
I certainly won't be upset if they sign him and I do see the merits of shelling out a 1-year deal for a "high upside" guy. The thing is, he's clearly garnering some early interest around the league and likely won't be a candidate for a super cheap and easy 1 year deal.
Also, let's look at a little comparison:
'11 Ballard/b] 38 rec. / 604 yds. / 4 TD
[b]'11 Finley: 55 rec. /767 yds. / 8 TD
This was far and away Finley's finest season as a pro and was still only marginally better than our UDFA camp fodder in Jake Ballard. Finley has not come close to that production since and has had the serious head injuries as well.
We don't have Ballard on the squad anymore, but the point is, you don't know what you have yet in Robinson/Grimble and you have a legitimate blocking TE in Davis. That said, if we can get Finley on a 1-year prove-it deal, i'd be all for it - but it's far from being worthy of getting into a bidding war for his services.
It may not be for you, but I'm sure it is for some. We have a group of no-names at the position. People see a name they know and assume it's an upgrade.

That's not a great argument. And, upon reflection, you're astute enough to able to list some reasons why yourself.
of getting finely here is that it would take even more pressure off of cruz. that would be another weapon. I hope that robinson comes out of nowhere like julius thonas did. i am sure bronco fans were not sure about their tight end situation last year. but i think if finely comes in, he would be a nice threat in the middle of the field. would definitely help in the red zone. i don't think it hurts us more than it helps us.
17 more catches and twice as many TD's is only "marginally better" ?
And develop who? What if Robinson keeps getting hurt and Grimble doesn't pan out?
17 catches and 4 more touchdowns for a highly touted 3rd round pick versus a first year starting undrafted TE who no one thought would be worthy of a starting role, to me, is marginally better.
Finley has not come even close to that production in any other season and has sustained major injury. The fact that you are vehemently lobbying for Finley's services despite his largely lackluster career coupled with dismissing any possible success of our young TEs on the roster is just misguided.
How much money do you think Finley could be had for? I'd be interested to see what you think he would be worth to bring on.
And don't get me wrong, if it's a low investment next-to-no-risk
for the Giants, sure, why not? We'll see what the market for him looks like and how he sees himself in that market.
Mostly, yeah, the Giants still have holes. It was always dreaming to think we'd see those all filled in just one off-season. The Giants will need to catch some breaks. Getting better than expected production from one of these no-names may be one of those breaks.
The only breaks the Giants need are injury breaks.
vibe.. regardless of their reasoning, he IS an upgrade.
The drops are concerning but also WAY overblown. He had a 8.1 drop % in 2012 (Jimmy Graham's was 10.4%.. Cruz was 7.7%)
A lot of these posters remember Finley dropping a couple passes against us in that Divisional game and heard that he drops a few and just ran with it to the point where they think he's some chronic pass dropper with stone hands who can't catch.
Finley is better than any TE on this roster. He has productive seasons in this league as a pass catching TE and can be an asset here if the price is reasonable.

.
This is one of those past performance is not a predictor of future results situations. I don't know, for a fact, he is an upgrade going forward. And hopefully that's the only direction the Giants are looking in.
Fair enough but I would say the odds of a healthy Finley outperforming any of the current players on the roster are reasonably high. I can't sit here and determine how healthy he actually is or predict how he'll bounce back. But I'd certainly feel better about finding out.
I don't feel at all confident in the group we have. There isn't one guy who has really produced at the NFL level.
much more than anyone on bbi. If we show interest, it probably means MacAdoo thought he was worth it.
From my couch, he's a big time upgrade to anything we have. He's got the physical tools to be a lot better than he is, but he's still pretty darn good. He's certainly a threat in the passing game and someone that defenses need to pay attention to.
there's not much to argue against it. But the fact that there is clear league wide interest makes me think this will not be the case. If our 4th round pick is healthy then I would FAR rather give him the go, then overpay for an injury riddled TE who never lived up to his potential despite getting major playing time.

Impossible to argue with that. As I said, if Finely isn't interested and/or contract friendly to the Giants, we'll need to hope for some upside surprises. But even if they are able to sign him, I don't think that means 'problem solved!' Either way, we'll be in wait and see mode.
Our Tight Ends should be able to get open very easily...
"The Packers' offense has always been more dynamic with the 6-foot-5, 247-pound tight end on the field. Finley had 25 receptions for 300 yards and three touchdowns in five full games last year and has 223 receptions for 2,785 yards with 20 touchdowns through his career."
because Finely drops passes at an alarming rate...pass.
I can't believe no one else responded to this one. This is as dumb as it gets.
I guess it has nothing to do with our offensive line, Eli, and WR's totally dominating the game or our pass rush making Rodgers extremely uncomfortable including Osi's strip sack with a wide open Nelson streaking down the sidelines.
I would put Jermichael Finely's drops in that game about at reason 14 why we won that game.

Brandon, we didn't respond because it was total stupidity..What was there to respond to? :)
how the TE will be used in our offense. Remember that this will not be a carbon copy of Green Bay's offense, but a amalgamation of Coughlin and McAdoo's offense. So, it will feature facets of both.
I think we will see an offense with the goal being a downfield passing attack coupled with a power running game, but with a higher tempo, more no huddle, and more short, quick passes and screens thrown in too.
I don't think that the TE will be featured as much as it is in Green Bay's offense as a pass catcher, but that it will be more than what it was in Gilbride's offense. The TE will still be primarily a run and pass blocker and will be the fifth option on passing downs after the WRs and the RB.
However, this remains to be seen, I could very well be wrong, but I believe that our TE's will be expected for 40-50 catches and to provide solid run and pass blocking per usual.

Plus, Name I know!
No, he's not. Suckage is suckage. Might as well put a OT out there that can at least block proficiently.

and for all the screaming this board got done doing about Brandon Myers, Finley is another mental lapse frustration case.

He's worlds better than anything the Giants have on their roster currently. If he's cleared and the price is right, this should be obvious.

Oh yeah, like we have plenty of proficient OTs just hanging around on the roster...
And develop who? What if Robinson keeps getting hurt and Grimble doesn't pan out?
We already have our own 1st rd RB to be concerned about, why another one?
And JF is not worth the headache.
