What are your expectations of Stevie Brown?

kelsto811 : 6/3/2014 10:18 pm
Drafted in the 7th round by the Raiders. Waived by the Raiders twice and the Panthers and Colts once each. Started 11 games for us in 2012 and had 76 tackles, 8 interceptions, 11 deflections, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries.

Everyone was wondering if he could duplicate that prior season and he started out really well in the preseason...and if I remember correctly tore his ACL during an interception return.

He is still young at 26. Do you guys think he can return to form? I would say he is a pretty instinctive type of safety and I doubt he's lost that.

he is able to pick off 8 passes again, that would be something. We're talking about a guy who two other teams really didn't want.

But he definitely had a knack for making plays on the ball in 2012.

Where he needs to get better it playing the run, hitting, and tackling. He doesn't play like a big safety.
and may I say this one more time?

stupid #%$%^#@ Will Hill.

he is gone.. im not even thinking about him..
I like him

I think he will bounce back and be solid. I like Demps and Burhe as well. I think we will be good at safety.
Not wasting tears on Will Hill.

Brown goes under appreciated. Came out of nowhere as a fine center field safety for this defensive system and all anybody wants is to do is call him a fluke and a mirage.

Looking forward to see him play again. At least he appreciates the gift he's been given.
I dont care how many interceptions he had
robbieballs2003 : 6/3/2014 10:31 pm : link
He was still, imo, one of the biggest reasons for our pathetic D two years ago. We gave up an unprecedented amount of big plays and he was the reason for a lot of blown coverages. I can live without the turnovers. I can't live with blown assignments. If he can eliminate that I will be happy.
he reminds me a bit of Percy Ellsworth
bigblue12 : 6/3/2014 10:41 pm : link
Big interception numbers but I don't think he is as good as his numbers. I do think he is a pretty good player though
Downside of no Hill is that Trel can't freelance
Mason : 6/3/2014 10:42 pm : link
like last season or like he was able to do with KP. Rolle was able to play centerfield last year. Stevie doesn't play the run well. And many of his interceptions in 2012 were off Rolle's hard work. Still hoping Berhe can pick up the pro game quickly. I can see him clicking with Rolle quickly.

that is a great point. I remember Antrelle being really excited that Hill was doing so well because he didn't have to play that role anymore. Really sucks.

Yup, Trel always gets screwed. Watch he is now forced to play at the LOS more. No more playmaking.
I always worry when

an inexperienced safety gets a lot of ints. It's more likely to be because they were out of place and got lucky than they're that good.
I think most see that the interception numbers are not the tell all
robbieballs2003 : 6/3/2014 11:17 pm : link
I'm sure we would all take our defense last year over the one two years ago. I don't want to kill Brown and place the blame solely on him. It was also his first time starting in the NFL so there will be mistakes. Hopefully he learned a lot last year when he wasn't playing. The staff seems to really like him which is a good sign. He has the physical ability to play. He just has to get the mental part down. If he does that we may not even be mentioning Hill's name anymore. However, if we see receivers wide open catching TDs then there will be a lot of screaming for Hill to be back.
Brown will have DRC at CB
PEEJ : 6/3/2014 11:24 pm : link
he'll probably be able to roam and fly to the ball. Something he seems to do well.
Here is his 2012-13 Highlights

27 could find himself in a position to make a play

OR, could find himself WAY out of contention to make one

Will Hill was a Missile...Stevie is a land mine

Both deadly....one more precise than the other
stevie brown makes me miss C.C. Brown

that comment is a lie.
That he doesn't smoke weed!
trueblueinpw : 6/4/2014 7:38 am : link
As long as he doesnt smoke any weed we should be fine. The one thing you just can't tolerate in the safety position is a hazy mind from huffing too much reefer.
if he stays healthy he will ger interceptions
aquidneck : 6/4/2014 8:12 am : link
in fewell's defense.

Brown has good ball skills. Doesn't seem very physical for a S, however. He won't provide a security blanket for the CBs, but could make a few "wow" plays.

I really like this analogy. It's accurate.

I think Rolle may still have a little more freedom than 2 years ago because of a better CB situation. I feel really good about our corners right now and I think we will be able to man up more often. The higher quality CBs also allow Brown to ballhawk with less risk. DRC (4.29), Prince (4.43), Thurmond (4.53), and McBride (4.57) are all fast and less likely to be beat deep. With our CBs I think Brown is a slightly better option against the pass (ballhawk). Hill would be a far better option against the run. Hill would have been better overall but we can still be dominant.

I'm more concerned with the ACL. The first year back after an ACL recovery is usually a down year (athletic freaks like Adrian Peterson excluded). Camp reports suggest he is doing well but I'll reserve judgement until gametime.

If a player does something that has not been done in 44 years
Marty in Albany : 6/4/2014 8:40 am : link
and you expect him to repeat that feat, you are going to be very disappointed. Football does not work that way.

Brown is a good player who enjoyed an extraordinary season. I expect Brown to play well, but I would not pin any numbers to his season and I don't think the Giants would either.
Brown
stretch234 : 6/4/2014 9:19 am : link
Should be fine because there are 3 competent front line CB, including 1 who knows how to cover the slot. That will make things much easier for Brown and for Rolle as well.

Saying that, the pass rush is still the biggest issue facing the D, regardless of who is back there. Pressuring the QB will determine how successful this D is or not

Are we really basing our evaluations on Brown by other teams as opposed to his actual experience here?
I think stevie brown will
ANGPASS : 6/4/2014 9:27 am : link
do well. he was a ball hawk. The defense will still miss hill. If hill rolle and brown are our 3 safety package, Hill would of been our deon grant. but since he isn't here anymore, i think demps or berhe could be fine in that role.
Brown made several huge plays two seasons ago
Jay on the Island : 6/4/2014 9:27 am : link
but he also was often beaten deep and often played wrong angles and was late in providing coverage over top. I was happy to have him back as the 3rd safety but now I am really concerned that he will be a full time starter. Here's hoping that either Cooper Taylor takes a huge leap this year or Nat Berhe is a diamond in the rough because safety might be our biggest need going into next offseason.

That's partly true. But Rolle's also been limited by lack of CB depth and having to step up as the slot CB at times, especially 2 seasons ago. That probably impacted him as much as the subpar safety play.
The Giants invested two 5th Round picks in Taylor and Berhe.
Klaatu : 6/4/2014 9:43 am : link
Both #152 overall. It would be great if one (or both) of those investments paid off. We'll see.
I expect his to be a

key contributor to another Giants SB Title.
If his knee holds up
old man : 6/4/2014 9:58 am : link
through camp, we will find out what they think he brings.
Between picks and UDFAs the starting job is up for grabs.
As for 'Trel playing down low vs S, I don't remember the player (pick or UFDA) but I do remember that the write up about him said or pretty much implied he was a combo safety/LB, which leads me to believe he is/is groomed to be Trels future replacement, hopefully to get both on the field so Trel can go back to the roaming FS.
he's not an every down Safety. He is a ball hawk who is

effective in obvious passing downs as a floater who reads the QB

we don't know the condition of Brown's knee, or if it will hold up for a whole season....couple that with the departure of Hill(personally, I would have given him one more shot), and safety could be a problem....counting on Berhe or Taylor is a pipedream....Demps better be able to step in....

Sounds like we might be checking that waver wire every day....
Why is counting on Taylor or Berhe a pipedream?
Klaatu : 6/4/2014 11:59 am : link
Because otherwise it doesn't fit your constant glass-half-empty narrative? No one's calling them Pro Bowlers, but the idea that they absolutely cannot contribute to the secondary is asinine. They'll have their opportunities. Whether or not they make the most of them remains to be seen, but it's certainly not a pipedream to think that they can.
Luckily his injury
giantgiantfan : 6/4/2014 12:04 pm : link
shouldn't hurt what he was best at, interceptions. Unfortunately it could make other areas of his game worse.
Wow....

OK, poor choice of words......First, Cooper has this injury bug, that he can't seem to shake...between the two of them, they have no experience.....There are people on this board that blame S. Brown for the defensive lapses of the 2012 team....guess who they will blame if either of these guys is forced to start?

Reasonably, I don't think they will contribute if forced into a starting role.....does it mean they can't? No....thus, to me it's a pipedream.....contrary to what people on this board think, I want the Giants to win....I just don't think they have the horses or the depth to do it, because you just know that injury bug is right around the corner....when Jerry made the deal with You-Know-Who, the first time, it took us 4 seasons to win a playoff game...this one could be longer....
I expect Demps to beat him out
WillieYoung : 6/4/2014 2:54 pm : link
He's not physical and he blows coverages constantly. Not 1 impressive play in the highlight reel. He does have ball skills if he gets the oppotunity for a pick.
