for some reason I wasn't expecting him to be cleared. I do think he'll play again, but it'll be kind of like a kenny phillips type deal where he'll never be the same and he'll be on the injury report more than he's not. too bad we couldn't have just kept him as strictly a KR.
why this is such a big deal...OTA's are non-contact anyway. If he isn't cleared for training camp then it will be a much bigger issue. From what I understand he's out there running around catching passes and getting mental reps.
But it would have been nice to get the clean bill of health now
But it could just be the Drs and the team being conservative since there is no real upside to clearing him now as there is no reason to have contact between now and camp anyway.
Side note, the Giants approach to injuries is why I don't think they will make a serious run at Finley
i had 3 fusion surgeries, and it usually takes about 3-4 months, but i was not going back to playing pro football, he may be progressing great, but he may not be ready for contact, remember we had a wide reciever go through a similar surgery and he came back to finish a pretty full career, Ike Hilton I believe was his name. Wilson may get the green light is 5 weeks when training camp opens, if it opened today, he would not be cleared, that is all this means, he may still be on track, so this is not bad news at all, he is only 4 1/2 months removed from surgery.
He can still do non-contact at OTAs, practice holding onto the ball, and learn the playbook.
If we see the Giants signing a DW-type speedy back,or bringing in a bunch on tryout Tuesdays, we'll learn what they think.
In the meantime we've waited 1 1/2seasons, we can wait a while longer.
And I disagree w/SB; while we may have been better to go OL,LB with his pick, we needed aa AB replacement as well.
but I wasn't making a backhanded statement, it was an actual question: I would really like to know what they are looking at on that film that could change in 5 weeks.
Wilson still expects to be cleared for contact by training camp.

@AdamSchefter
Giants RB David Wilson, who met w/ doctors this am, will meet again w/ doctors in July and expects to be cleared for full contact in camp.
start on the PUP list, so we bring him in later in the year. But let's see what happens five weeks from now before camp. It would have been good if he had been cleared, but it's not a disaster that he isn't. We have Jennings and Williams.
Wilson expected to be cleared today, so I wouldn't put much stock into that.
True but that wasn't based on anything but hope. The fact that he still expects to be cleared by camp means the image today showed real tangible improvement being that he still believes that goal is attainable.

Let's not assume the worst here.
There may have been some improvement but just not enough for our sometimes very conservative staff (which is very careful to protect the players long term health and risk for injury moreso than other teams) to clear him.
Just a guess here and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but if there was no improvement I don't think we would have heard he expects to be cleared by July.
in the National Flag League. No contact, no fumbles, no pass blocking, lots of speed. Not an NFL player though. Before or after injury. He will always be remembered for a couple of garbage time highlights. A wasted pick.
Did the Giants know of any previous history with his neck, before drafting him?
It's a shame, because he did have to potential to take it to the house....Giants haven't had a runner like that since Morris....Tiki had long runs, but it was more because of his elusiveness rather than raw speed...
The Giants, for whatever Reason, have been snake bit with their drafts.....that can't seem to draft beyond the 1st or 2nd round, and even those picks, we get a couple years out of them and then they are gone.....Wilson, JPP, Nicks, Beatty, Phillips, Thomas, Ross, Smith, etc.
I really REALLY hope they don't find a way to activate him week 1. He had the surgery 4.5 months ago and regardless off the world class rehab, fuses generally take upwards of a year to be considered "healed". I hope this kid isn't rushed back.
They definitely needed a rb given what they had on hand; however, need based drafts can come back to haunt you.
And, in view if Glenn playing fairly well at LT for the Bills, it makes you wonder what they saw or thought saw compelling them to take Wilson over Glenn.
I think it's fairly obvious what the Giants saw in Wilson. We've seen it. His career has taken an unfortunate turn thus far but the book is so far from closed on this dude and people keep talking about him as if he's some past tense player who already happened and never amounted to anything.
I would think there is a good chance he could be cleared by July 25. But, I agree that he should only be cleared if the Drs are 100% absolutely certain about what they are seeing.

lol. There should be a timer just for posts like these. Set it for 365 days.

RE: To think the NYG could have picked Cordy Glenn instead
saw in Wilson, we didn't see it on the field. As a RB, he failed. As a returner, he had good results, but we didn't spend a #1 pick on a KR.
IF he never returns to football, a large contingent of BBIers will swear that he was a great pick cut short by injury and count him in the plus column for Reese.
I hope he returns and makes me a fool. I'm confident making me a fool is fairly easy, but him returning to football, not so much, and his returning to football and making me the fool, even less.
Actually, we did see glimpses of it his rookie year (as a RB) people just have selective memories and choose to remember one thing about David Wilson: fumbles.
Well he had a nice TD run against Cleveland in 2012
David E. Wilson @4stillRunning 54m
Dr love what he saw and I love what I heard not ideal because I love practice but SOUNDS LIKE DAVE WILL BE READY 22 ROCK WEEK1 FoSHO 👌#bless
The worst part of taking him over Glenn is that Glenn was very likely one of the couple guys they had tiered above Wilson that was still on the board when they picked Wilson (it was confirmed by multiple quality sources that DW wasn't the highest left player).
They basically had to have viewed RB as more of a need than OL at that point in time and that's pretty hard to swallow, given what the league is now and how the 2011 season unfolded.
So I'm not surprised he wasn't cleared. And I'm not worried yet. I'll start to be concerned if he's not cleared by training camp or the start of the preseason. I honestly feel even if he is cleared by then they wont let him have contact.
There's no reason to rush him into contact drills anyway.
Wilson off. It's human nature to look at a pick that may have been controversial and say - if only they had taken this guy, look at how he turned out. And, the frustration is understandable - we're in year 3 and still waiting for major contribution from a round 1 pick.
I am hopeful that with this new offense he can really tap into that explosiveness.
at the moment of drafting, but after tabbing Wilson, looking at his tape, watching him play for the giants when he did, I can't see how (in retrospect) you fault Reese for the decision to take Wilson. We didn't know he would have neck problems at all, let alone requiring fusion of vertebrae. He's a great kid and a world class athlete who runs like a cross between the Tasmanian Devil and the Road Runner.
The injury shit is mega misfortune, but you can't call that in advance (unlike say Andre Brown's propensity to injury which was littered throughout his college career.) I still like the Wilson pick and think this guy can shine for us in the new O once he gets healthy, (presuming he does.)
There's not one mention of the spinal stenosis in the MRI reports we have been given? Is that no longer an issue?
Arcs, in the 3rd round in 2011 Reese took Jerrel Jernigan over OT/OG Clint Boling out of Georgia. Boling became a starter in 2012 for the Bengals at OG (16/16) and continued to start at OG for them in 2013 (12/12) until undone by a knee injury in game 12. Boling is the type of guy (indeed a literal example since he was on the board for us) Reese has missed on looking for more "impact" type guys like Jernigan.
Hope he can resume his career, but if not, I just hope he's able to live a long & fruitful life.
As for those who say he didn't show much, I disagree. He showed flashes & he's still pretty green. I think he could become a very good player, but we may never know.

Agreed. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

This should be good.
What does that have to do with him being cleared from spinal surgery?

OTOH, we could have had Cordy Glenn.
That puts Finley being cleared for contact in that same window ahead of Wilson being cleared (hopefully)

And who is Ike Hilton?
And who is Ike Hilton?
I believe he can still be PUP'd if he doesn't participate in team activities during camp.
How many times have we heard a guy like Brandon Jacobs or someone else say, "I'm fine...I'm playing..." and then they end up not or worse, on IR.
Wilson tells Schefter by e-mail that he expects to be cleared by camp. There is a very good chance that's just bluster on his part.

Eric you certainly have a point. Players do talk big when it comes to timetables for their return from injury. I guess we'll see.

Reese is whom he is. Always an athlete/potential game breaker over an OL every time. Same this year.

That would have helped the OL immeasurably.

Which "athlete/game breaker" did he take over OL in the 2nd rd?
I get the sense the Giants aren't including him as a significant part of their plans, and are getting close to moving on.

Dynamic athlete.
It's not like they took his height (5'10") and said "Come back in a month and maybe you'll be six feet tall."
There is little point to clear him now.
