Eli Manning Career Discussion

NYG07 : 6/4/2014 1:46 pm
I briefly mentioned some of this in another thread but thought it deserved its own thread. Eli just finished his 10th season in the NFL.

- Eli has a career completion percentage of 58.5 with 229 touchdowns and 171 Interceptions. His career quarterback rating is 81.2.

-Eli has led the league in interceptions 3 times (2007, 2010, 2013)

- Eli is one of 5 quarterbacks all time to be crowned superbowl MVP more than once.

-Eli has the 3rd longest streak of consecutive starts in NFL history(and counting)

- The first two times that he led the leauge in interceptions, he followed it up with great seasons. In 2008 he had a career low 10 interceptions while leading the giants to a 12-4 record and a #1 seed in the NFC. If burress did not shoot himself in the leg this team would have had a great shot at another superbowl. In 2011 Eli carried a team with a piss poor defense and running game to the playoffs when everything came together and he delivered a 2nd superbowl championship.

The point of this thread is how will Eli be viewed when he retires? He is obviously the greatest QB in NYG history but one year he is considered Elite and the next he is a joke and laughed at for how many picks he throws. So many people talk about how inconsistent and eratic he is but he has been pretty cyclically consistent. I can predict that in 2016 he will lead the league in interceptions.

How will you remember Eli Manning?
I want to see how he plays in a more QB friendly system

I will reserve judgement for now.

A lot of QB's have great careers, but not definitive moments...
Britt in VA : 6/4/2014 1:49 pm : link
Eli has them in spades.

I'll remember him as coming up big in many, very big moments.
Unless something major changes

I think he'll be remembered with 2 words. Inconsistent and clutch.

When he's good he's great, but he's spottily good.
I'll remember him as a multi-SB winner

and MVP, and one of the better clutch QB's I've had the pleasure to see. How history remembers him is a good question, but a lot will depend on how he finishes his career.
I should add 'tough'' too
Overseer : 6/4/2014 1:58 pm : link
guy is a warrior on the field. Typified, obviously, by the SF playoff game.
Eli currently is sitting on 85 career wins
AnyoneButPhilly : 6/4/2014 1:58 pm : link
It's not crazy to think he will retire with well over 100. Even without the rings and mvp's, just about every other QB with 100 wins is going to or is already in the HOF
Good point, ABP, but barring injury,
Section331 : 6/4/2014 2:04 pm : link
he's certain to retire with over 100 wins. I don't think there are any other 2-time SB MVP's not in the HOF either.

... He's only 33. I believe he has at least one good run left in him.

And, you know, when Eli gets on a good run....
Hope he can add to the good memories for one thing,
Jimmy Googs : 6/4/2014 2:14 pm : link
but nevertheless...

I will remember Eli as a very good QB who had some great performances in some of the Giants biggest games. He threw way too many interceptions along the way but never for a lack of effort.

Starr, Bradshaw, Montana, and Brady. All Hall of Fame QBs except Brady (and think we can say Brady will make the cut).

Some others to add:

-Most Game Winning Drives in a season (Tied: 8 -n 2011)
-Most Road Wins in a single season and postseason (11 in 2011)

The truth is that, almost regardless of anything that happens going forward, he's not going to be remembered by those outside of the Giants bubble as a great QB, because, outside of one season, he never has been one. Unless he's a key factor in another SB win, he's not going to be a HOFer and he's going to be widely viewed as the third best QB from his own draft class, when only one of the two ahead of him may be HOF bound himself (and that's not certain). Unfairly and incorrectly, he's going to likely be viewed by many, thanks to how bad he was at his worst bleeding over and leaving most of his rate stats middling at best for his era, with all the turnovers, as "just a guy" who got lucky twice or was carried twice.

... but any Giant fan, anyone inside the Giants bubble, that doesn't look back at his career, no matter how it ends here, with fondness and appreciation is an undeserving asshole, because he was such a key factor in two of the best, most enjoyable title runs any team has had, ever, in any sport. And, while he may not be great league-wide or historically, he's certainly the best QB the Giants have ever had, when you combine longevity with accomplishment. The comebacks, the great wins or plays that so few other QBs would/could make, should more than outshine the inconsistency and collapses in "our" memories when the time for it kicks in.
Eli will be viewed exactly how he's viewed now.

Perversely, if Eli becomes a consistent 4,500 yards, 30 TD, 15 INT QB over the next five years, he'll be remembered better by the average fan even if he doesn't win another SB.
I agree....

Even during the game,

The last time I didn't think he could pull out one of the fire was Dallas a few years ago ... when I went to bed feeling oh well good try only to wake up and find he even pulled that game out of the fire ...

He's not a lock but I really like his chances

I think they are currently better than Rothlisberger due to a rape charge and in 3 opportunities, Ben has never been the MVP (SB or league). I believe MFP nods are huge.

Eli could really use a league MVP, another SB ring, or at least 3 more years of high numbers (low interceptions) to be a lock. I'm hoping he does all three.
The best thing about him

Unless the Giants vastly over-achieve this season, we will also HAVE to remember that Eli misses the playoffs in 5 of his 6 prime years (does any other HOF QB in the the modern era have this kind of futility?), and that he has two playoff-winning years out of his first eleven.

Yes of course I will forever remembe the two Super Bowl runs. I was at the stadium for one of them. No need to remind me of that.

I agree with the earlier poster who said he will remember Eli's maddening inconsistency and great clutchness. Numerous un-clutch QBs did enter the hall of fame, but few (extremely) inconsistent QBs did.

Eli Manning...
rocco8112 : 6/4/2014 4:27 pm : link
...is a franchise Quarterback of the highest order, and with the possible exception of an elite NHL goalie, that is the rarest commodity in sports.

I think everyone focuses way too much on stats. Football in particular is a sport where individual statistics mean the least. Who gives a rat's ass about Eli's completion percentage and especially QB rating, which in my opinion is a BS stat anyway. This is the fantasy football influence on the game. Where stats are all important and the true measure of performance.

It also is somewhat useless to always point only to Eli's two rings and end the discussion there. What role did Eli play in those historic runs? There is no objective NFL fan who could argue that Eli did not play a very prominent role in those titles, and anyone who calls those runs luck, is probably not even worth talking to.

Eli's resume includes multiple moments that would be the paramount accomplishment of the careers of any of his contemporaries. Manning owns two game winning final drives in a championship game. He is also the only QB to ever deliver the goods when only a TD would suffice, and he did that against the "greatest team of all time" in '07.

I feel very lucky to have been able to watch Eli's career and I am certain that there are many more great moments to come and when it comes to being a bonafide franchise QB, Eli plays second fiddle to no one.
toughness, durability, and being incredible under pressure
WeatherMan : 6/4/2014 6:19 pm : link
Eli didn't just win two Super Bowl MVP's - he did it against Tom Brady, arguably the greatest QB of this era and legitimately in the conversation for greatest of all time. That is an accomplishment no other QB of this period can claim.
Eli

has had 1 losing season, this past one since starting a full season.

I believe when it's all said and done barring serious injury. Eli will be top 10 in TDs, career passing yards, game winning drives, and 4th Q come backs.

Factor in 2 SB wins for the ages, and last name Manning, first family of football, and I think he more than easily gets into the HOF. Add the 3rd longest active streak to the mix too.

Clutch, durable, &

How about this?
Emlen'sGremlins : 6/4/2014 6:56 pm : link
Eli is currently at #19 all time in career passing yards with 35,345.

With an average season (3,000 yards) for him this year he will pass the following:

18) Jim Kelly - 35,467
17) Donovan McNabb - 37,276
16) Boomer Esiason - 37,920
15) Dave Krieg - 38,147

With another average season (3,000 yards) in 2015 he should eclipse the following:

14) Johnny Unitas - 40,329
13) Joe Montana - 40,551
12) Kerry Collins - 40,922

One more average season (3,000 yards) in 2016 should vault him ahead of the following:

11) Dan Fouts - 43,040
10) Drew Bledsoe - 44,611

Of course, if Eli puts up a few 4,000 yard seasons he will approach the Top 10 of all time even faster. I can definitely see him catching the following:

9) Vinny Testaverde - 46,233
8) Fran Tarkenton - 47,003
6) Warren Moon - 49,325

Anyhow, Eli should be in the Top 10 in Passing Yardage and Passing TDs when he retires....and guess what? That all adds up to a ticket punched to Canton, OH!!

However he's remembered by the general public

Those people are really stupid then, given that any player has a right to refuse to play for the team that drafts them so long as they're willing to sit out a season and try their luck again the next draft (which, it was floated, Eli was, if SD hadn't traded his rights).

I wouldn't trade my career for many others, including Peyton's. Two-time champ with a "forever" play in each Super Bowl. I don't think he needs another title to make the HOF, but he needs some more playoff heroics - or at least appearances.

I'll admit that I'm surprised he's reached these depths again after 2011. I thought the days of leading the league in INTs were behind us. Hopefully there's one more chapter to write.

GW: The Simms comparison is apt in many ways.
Big Blue Blogger : 6/5/2014 6:28 am : link
Both had rocky starts to their careers, put up numbers that were merely above-average for their eras and played in the shadow of all-time greats. They were also both tough as nails and played their best on the biggest stage.

That said, it's way too early to assess Eli's career. If he finishes like Elway or Strahan, as the steady veteran leader of a championship team that he no longer has to carry, he'll be remembered as one of the best ever. If he finishes like Phil, as a cap casualty and damaged goods, he'll be remembered as Phil is: a very good QB on some very good teams, who could raise his game to transcendent levels on occasion. There's a long way to go, though. At Eli's age, Simms was playing his best ball, in an era when QBs took a lot more physical abuse.
WTF is this supposed to mean?

Did more than one gray cell fire as you were penning this line? You're not talking about solar system orbits here, you are talking about a QB's play, and that statement means nothing, and doesn't "explain" anything.

Reese and co are doing their best (whatever anyone thinks of that) to set up Eli and TC for at least one more title run IMO, and Eli will be judged by all of us if indeed he can deliver a 3rd Lombardi trophy.

I'm praying Eli can do both, that would be truly extraordinary!

I'm praying Eli can do both, it would be truly remarkable.

Because that will trump every other career or single season stat he puts up, aside from (just maybe) setting an all time NFL record for consecutive career starts - which IMO has it's own special place in football history given how G-d awful difficult that is playing this game.

He's on a HOF track without question
Corey : 6/5/2014 10:51 am : link
If he retires after four more seasons he will very likely have:

- 50,000+ yards
- 305+ TD's
- 58.5% completion rate
- fewer INT's than future HOF Brett Favre ;)
- 2 SB MVP's or more

If you look at the Pro Football HOF QB's, these numbers are right in-line with most of them, and better than those on run-centric teams like Aikmen, Bradshaw, and some others. Of course, one could argue that almost every QB should be in the HOF automatically if they let Joe Namath in, but that's another story.
