My take: College-heavy draft that is largely light on potential and heavy on experience. Some of these kids are really going to move and that’s great, but even if they sign all of their preps (which seems really unlikely) it’s a draft that seems to have a lot less potential than last year’s even outside of Round 1. I like DeCarr a lot and think he could turn out to be the best prospect out of the lot. I could see near at hand contributions from Lindgren, Montgomery, Payton and Spencer and there is a lot of potential in Foley, Gittons, Thompson and Kelzer. They seem to have really tried to find college guys with stories over the last few years, guys like Palladino and Smith who have room to grow like preps but don’t have prep signing demands. Cave and Toffey are uncertain signs but would add ceiling to this group if they do join the org. Guys like Carley, Borens, Chin, Barrow and Jose might have some more untapped potential but a lot of question marks. And a few of these guys like Conde, Slaybaugh and Gordon are likely to slide into org roles over the next year or two. Interesting draft, likely to be understood in conjunction with the looming IFA binge and also the guys coming stateside from the last couple IFA classes.
I cribbed a lot of this from RAB, Pinstripe Alley (a good read if you're bored) and The Baseball Cube.
2 Jacob Lindgren LHRP Miss St.
Polished lefty reliever with nasty stuff, sits 91-95 with a fastball and gets his K’s with a wipeout slider. One of the best groundball rates in the business, which will serve him well at YS. Undersized at 5’11” and 205. Crazy K rate, 93 (21 BBs) in 51 IP, 0.88 ERA and a WHIP well below 1.000.
3 Austen DeCarr RHSP Salisbury School – Prep (sorta)
Big-body starter at 6’3” and 218, sits low to mid-90’s on his FB and has the makings of a plus curve and a developing change. As a cold weather kid he’s a little more projectable than most. Clemson commit, I’d guess he gets around slot but he might take more.
4 Jordan Montgomery LHSP U of South Carolina
Another big body at 6’4” and 225, he’s a “plus makeup” guy with a low-90’s FB that won’t hit much higher than 91, but it has run and sink and he can locate it. Best pitch is a changeup, also throws a cutter and a curve. Had a lights out 2013 with a 1.48 ERA, it climbed to 3.42 this year. K rate increased but so did his HR and walk rates, maybe throwing a little harder but locating poorly. Pretty modest ceiling but he should move.
5 Jordan Foley RHSP Central Michigan
6’3” and 215 pound righty with a mid-90’s FB, he can maintain his velocity into games. Inconsistent slider, developing change and sinker. Despite the knocks for inconsistency, it looks like he made a conscious effort to address the walks and finished with a BB/9 of roughly 2. His K rate took a dip too.
6 Jonathan Holder RHRP Miss. St.
Actually the closer at MSU, with Lindgren usually pitching multiple innings. Low 90’s FB and a great curve, excellent control. First of a number of fat bodies at 6’2” and 242, likely to sign for underslot.
7 Mark Payton OF U of Texas
Lefty hitting center fielder for UT, little at 5’8” and 190, very limited pop but a great contact tool. Almost a Taylor Dugas clone, walked 49 times this year to 22 strikeouts, hit a crazy .393 last year, this year down to .319 but with a .355 OBP. OPS over .900 the last three years. 16/16 on SB attempts this year but smarter than he is fast, very little pop (1 HR the last two seasons) but maybe some latent as he is said to hit with loft. Probably doesn’t have the legs for CF but said to have a great arm and solid instincts.
8 Conner Spencer 1B UC Irvine
Lefty hitting 1B who had a crazy .373 BA this year (.443 OBP/.496 SLG), 21:21 K:BB, problem is 0 HRs in more than 400 Pas. Unless you’re John Olerud a 1B is supposed to hit HRs, and even he had a few. Rep as a very good defender. Probably underslot/org type, but maybe he surprises.
9 Vincent Conde SS Vanderbilt
Righty hitting SS who hit exactly .307 the last two years, as many BBs as K’s this year (33) and a little bit of pop (10 HR over the last two years). 10/12 on SB attempts. Rep for being somewhat mediocre defensively by professional standards and his arm may require a transition to 2B. Underslot candidate.
10 Ty McFarland 2B James Madison
Lefty-hitting senior sign, 6’3” and 190 lbs, just 19 K’s each of the last two seasons. .317 this year, .339 and .330 the two prior years. Power spiked a little this year from 4 HRs up to 9. Definitely an underslot but could surprise.
11 Matt Borens RHSP Eastern Illinois
Lanky-bodied righty at 6’7” and 185 (if that’s right), 100:36 K:BB over 109 IP this year, gave up 15 HRs which suggests he doesn’t locate well in the zone (at least not yet), solid 3.39 ERA though. Last year in summer ball (Coastal Plain League) threw to a solid 3.75 ERA and .213 opposing BA. Solid walk rate of roughly 3.3/9 for his height.
12 Chris Gittons 1B Grayson CC
Thick righty 1B at 6’4” 250 gifted with what Phil might call “now power”, one of the best JUCO bats in the country hit .424 with 12 HRs, 35 BBs against 28 Ks in 227 Pas.
13 Bo Thompson 1B The Citadel
Another guy with “now power” with a lithe, graceful athlete’s body (5’10” and a reported 250+), Bo (real name is Leonard) has hit 23 HRs over the last two years and walked a combined 95 times (w/ 36 HBPs). Power and patience are his hallmarks. He won’t move enough to be more than a lead-footed 1B but the power potential is great.
14 Sean Carley RHP WVU
Another candidate for Team Anorexia at 6’4” and 250, he seems to have eaten his way out of the Air Force Academy. His figure screams “Bartolo Colon” (or Kenny Powers) but he throws mid-90’s and already has TJS out of the way. Developing slider and changeup. This year managed a 2.95 ERA and 47:26 K:BB in 73.1 IP. Also hit 10 batters (probably for jumping him in the cafeteria line). Already 23 years old.
15 Andrew Chin LHP Boston College
6’1”, 190 lb with a rep as a crafty lefty, former 5th round pick of the Blue Jays, paced Boston College starters with 3.10 ERA, K:BB of 52:32 in 78.1 IP is unimpressive but his .214 opposing BA and 3 HRs allowed were. Also hit 11 guys who probably also deserved it. Threw to a 6.45 ERA on the Cape last year. FB described as upper 80’s with a good change, can work both sides of the plate and up and down. I doubt high 80’s gets you drafted in the 5th though, so maybe that’s just BS.
16 Derek Callahan LHP Gonzaga
6’4” 205 lb lefty threw 50.2 IP of 4.26 ERA ball, with 27:20 K:BB, none of which is remotely impressive, but dominated a wood bat league a few years back to a 2.25 ERA, throws 90-92 on a good day with a developing slider, curve and change. Basically your average lefty who throws hard enough to break a window with a baseball so will get a look.
17 Garrett Cave RHP South Sumpter HS
6’4” 180 lb righty, very young (turns 18 next month), sits low 90’s with his FB, improving curveball, change is usually the last to come on a prep guy. Raw, mechanics need cleaning up but athletic and a lot of potential there. An FIU commit so likely not unassailable, depends on whether we have the money and whether he’s the overslot we choose to spend it on.
18 Justin Kamplain LHP Alabama
6’0” 175 lb lefty, looks to have been a weekend starter at Bama with a 2.90 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, 69:31 K:BB this year in 90 IP (just 65 hits surrendered). Strong summer on the Cape in 2013 with a 1.65 ERA and 41:18 K:BB in 38 IP. High-80’s to low-90’s lefty with a live FB and a curveball, if he can command them he could be a nice pick.
19 Joe Harvey RHP Pitt
6’2” and 220 lb righty, 3.27 ERA but 29:20 in 33 IP, four-pitch pitcher (including a low-90’s FB) but if the control sucks he’s probably not going to amount to much. Worth a look.
20 Corey Holmes RHP Concordia (TX)
6’6” 200 lb righty relieved for WVU last year to a 5.71 ERA in 17.1 IP, went to Concordia where he allowed just 1 ER in 18.2 IP, 29:6 K:BB. Maybe he turned a corner or maybe the level of competition just dropped.
21 Porter Clayton LHP Oregon
6’4” 215 lb lefty who throws low-90’s with a change and what RAB describes as a slurve. Swingman was not all that effective (4.46 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, more walks than K’s - 26 to 25 in 36.1 IP) as a collegian but presumably the Yanks like something about his repertoire. And he’s a lefty, and has a pulse.
22 Jake Kelzer RHP Indiana
Huge kid (6’8” and 230) who is a superb athlete as he also swam D1, Kelzer is one of the handful of really intriguing draftees. Closed for IU, hurling a 2.03 ERA and 1.00 WHIP over 31 IP, with a 44:9 K:BB. 90-91 FB (presumably with a good downward plane) and slider he used as a strikeout pitch.
23 Will Toffey 3B Salisbury (HS)
6’2”, 195 lb left handed hitter who played short in HS but is likely to move off the position going forward, Toffey is a strong prospect with a Vandy commit who seems likely to be a tough sign. Strong arm. I’ve heard him described as having below average speed and speed as a strength so who knows? Good bat speed, expected to have develop power as he moves.
24 Dominic Jose CF Stanford
6’3” 195 lb switch-hitter, a part-time player who didn’t find much success at college (.200 BA as a senior). Presumably the Yankees like a tool or two and think he can work with him, son of former Yankee Felix Jose. This switch-hitting shortstop at least represented a better value than the last one.
25 Dylan Barrow RHP U of Tampa
6’3” 190 lb righty who is pretty new to pitching, as a former shortstop he is athletic and runs it up to 96 on the gun, mid-80’s on a breaking ball. He is just 20 so he has some potential.
26 Collin Slaybaugh C Washington State
Lefty catcher and senior sign at 6’2 and 185, .309/.381/.373 career slash line, 27/33 career stolen bases, will probably either start for SI or caddy for a prospect, maybe Torrens if they choose to send him there.
27 Griffin Gordon OF Jacksonville State
Lefty-hitting senior draftee, .380/.447/.521 line with 29 BBs to 19 Ks, 7 HRs and 18 XBHs, 10/11 on SB attempts.
28 Lee Casas RHP USC
Big (6’7” and 255 lb) senior draftee, didn’t appear for USC as best I can tell after transitioning from JUCO, I know nothing about the guy.
29 Mariano Rivera RHP Iona
Lanky like his dad, stands 5’11” and 155 lbs, just 20 years old, said to sit around 90 with a decent slider as his out pitch, 5.40 ERA in 70 IP with 50:26 K:BB. Dad apparently wants him to finish school but he wants to get started.
30 Jorge Perez RHP Grand Canyon State
6’2” 205 righty who ranked as BA’s #2 prospect in the West Coast League (unconfirmed reports say the #1 prospect returned to his little league team mid-season). FB topped out around 91 this spring but hit 93-94 last year, some concerns about tendonitis apparently. Fringey slider and an above average change complete the repertoire. 3.43 ERA and 38:12 K:BB in 63 IP this year but that was apparently while nursing injury. RAB lists him as a “depth” pick but if he’s healthy he could be more.
31 Devyn Bolansky CF UC Riverside
5’11” 185 lb lefty hitter, .336/.370/.398, 14/21 on SBs, quintessential “scrappy” guy with a K rate of under 9%.
32 Jordan Ramsey RHP UNC-W
6’4” 200 lb righty who dropped for some reason, supposedly a blister and a triceps injury, sits low-90’s but has touched as high as 96, secondary stuff (slider and change) said to be average on a good day, RAB says a bullpen prospect. His 5.40 ERA this year and 42 Ks in and 6 HRs in just 49.2 IP won’t wow anyone (though his 14 BBs are impressive). Last year though he had a 2.34 ERA in 104 IP, with a 1.16 WHIP. There is more talent there than he showed this year.
33 David Graybill RHP Arizona State
6’4” 225 lb righty two-way player, expected to pitch as a pro (good considering he hit just .227). No info about his repertoire.
34 Matt Wotherspoon RHP Pitt
6’1” 175 lb righty, curious tumble for the Pitt right-hander who can touch mid-90’s with his FB, has a plus breaking ball and a good changeup, 3.70 ERA this year with a 1.27 WHIP, 85:33 K:BB in 107 IP, quality starter for an ACC program. A senior with a chance to be a big-leaguer, surprised he fell this far.
35 Chris Hudgens C Valhalla HS
6’1” 190 lb prep catcher, the only one we drafted this year. Cal State Fullerton commit hit 12 HRs as a senior in HS and threw out 48% of base-stealers, not sure how high his ceiling is but he’s not a non-entity.
36 William Gaddis RHP Brentwood HS
Prep righty has been on the map for a couple years, was in the high 80’s last year (not sure about now) with movement, along with a promising slider and change. Committed to Furman. Listed at 6’0” and 175 but that could be dated.
37 Ryan Lindemuth 2B William and Mary
Right-handed contact hitter with more BBs than K’s (20 to 16), 6 HRs as a senior. To illustrate the shitty nature of reports for middling or worse prospects, he has been described as having little or no patience but had a .445 OBP this year. Senior though, almost certainly filler.
38 Andre del Bosque RHP University of Houston-Victoria
80 Name tool, 6’0” 225 lb 5th year senior who had TJS, no idea what he throws.
39 Cameron Warren 1B Carl Albert HS (OK)
6’3” and 210, the righty U of Oklahoma commit has power potential, had 8 HRs as a HS senior with a .463 BA. Maybe there is something there, but prep 1B are rarely a hot commodity because you can’t move anywhere after 1B.
40 Madison Stokes SS AC Flora HS (SC)
Righty hitting shortstop who probably moves off the position going forward, he was projected in the 10-12 round range but fell. University of South Carolina commit. Line drive hitter with the ability to get bigger than 6’3” and 190. Has dealt with some injury issues, seems likely he attends college.
I will update with signings when I see them and bump it to keep it from going stale.
Dune -- I've been listening to the Charleston River Dogs on the internet over the past few weeks. They've got some hitters down there. Mike Ford at 1B and Aaron Judge in RF. I realize it's Low A Ball, but that's where it starts.
Sorry, I recorded Payton's OBP as .355. It was .455.
I like the arms. A few of them ave to an out, right?....
Definitely, plus Baez and Yonauris Rodriguez (2013 bonus baby) are still in the DSL.
Although it's an honor to be drafted by the Yankees, I'm going to proudly be a gamecockđź”⚾️ thank you all for your polite compliments!
Corey Holmes has signed and is headed to SI.
Bo Thompson tweeted a picture of his locker, so it seems he has signed.
Ryan Lindemuth seems to have signed as well.
They didn't pick positional preps earlier because they are getting a monster IFA class, with SS/3B's, C's and OF's,
And sin, DeCarr is a done deal. But don't throw out the other guys they got just because they went to college.
No, the former Melbourne Central Catholic and West Virginia hard-throwing right-handed pitcher wasn't quite losing the mullet yet.
"I was just getting shaped up for Saturday night's graduation/draft party," he said. "It's funny that I was getting my hair cut because the Yankees are known for having strict rules about being clean-cut and all that."
...
Often compared to fictional television baseball character, wildman Kenny Powers, on the show "Eastbound and Down," Carley said he'd have to retire the Powers routine in the minors, at least for now.
"I may not look like Kenny Powers when I begin in the minors," he laughed, "but I guaranteed at some point he will make a return."
Easily my favorite new draftee. Also notes that they changed him from starting to relieving. Maybe that's one reason the Yankees liked him - probably they see him as a future closer type.

Probably a safe bet on both counts. The downside of it is we're not likely to end up with another Bryan Mitchell or Mason Williams out of the collegian crop, but the upside is we're not likely to end up with another Bryan Mitchell or Mason Williams out of the collegian crop. We'll see where the results are in twelve months or in two or three years.

When Sborz is pitching with confidence instead of nibbling, like he did last night, he can just overpower guys with that mid '90s heat and killer slider.

#Yankees 4th round #mlbdraft pick LHP Jordan Montgomery has signed and will head to play at Staten Island affiliate after physical in Tampa
Foxboro's @RiDeCarr7 will report to Tampa tomm to sign with Yankees. Offer is for twice slot value for Pick 91. 2013 slot value == $575K.
Going to take some creative accounting to make this work. Probably kiss the other signability guys goodbye.
Jacob Lindgren, Yankees' first pick in draft, is heading to Tampa on Thurs to get physical. Precursor to officially signing deal w/ Yankees.
DSL1 is a power house, that can beat you any way you want to play it.
Phil, I'm hoping Rumbelow and Goody go up in the near future. Both talented kids, look like they're too good for the level.
Per Damon Oppenheimer, the #Yankees have agreements with their 10th, 11th, 13th, 19th, 26th, 27th, 34th, 37th and 38th rounders.
Staten Island Yanks start on Friday with a home-away-home-away 4-game series with Brooklyn. Funny to do it that way, but it guess it promotes interest.
Additionally, don’t be surprised if Judge and Severino move soon, as well as Nick Goody. Not today or tomorrow, necessarily, but soon.

Dan (New York)
What are your thoughts on Rob Refsnyder? Just got called up to AAA after kicking but in AA. What sort of ceiling does he have, and who would be a good comp? Thanks.
Klaw
(1:25 PM)
He's not a major league 2b yet on defense. He's not a .300+ hitter either - I was surprised the Yanks promoted him on the small sample and .391 BABIP. That's not to say I don't like him, but he's become the flavor of the month and he's not THAT kind of guy.
Just signed my professional contract with the New York Yankees. Pretty amazing and surreal feeling!
here's the SI Yanks' roster. It's been fun watching it fill up this week and wondering if they would get to the finish line by tonight (opening night). It's always interesting to me how these kids are just like a week or two removed from wherever they were and now playing pro ball in Staten Island (and the same goes for Brooklyn, even though that's the Mets).

3rd-rder Austin DeCarr signs w/@Yankees for $1 mil. Pick value = $585,100. Conn. HS RHP, 6-3/218, FB to 95, promising curve. @MLBDraft

Next year we should end up with more than 1 first rounder.
Mitchell melted down in the 6th inning of his start for Trenton.
I saw him a couple weeks ago haul ass around the bases on a routine pop-up. The fielder misplayed it and he was standing on 3B. Plenty of "scrappy" players would have dogged it on such an obvious out. Makes me think it has to be something off the field.

I think the problem is in his head- his stuff is amazing. It might not be a bad idea to put him in the pen. With his FB alone, he's a potential closer. If he only has to work on ONE off-speed pitch and command, he might put it together.
In his case, it isn't that he has stalled out in AA- he just has not had sustained success at any level. Like Betances, you have to give GREAT arms every chance, but when the results aren't there, you have to give in and send him to the pen.
At any rate, he's not even close to ready to replacing Nuno.
Nuno's a bad MLB starter. Replacing him with a guy who got destroyed in his brief AAA stint improves them how, exactly?
Legit; tied him to Rays for $3.5M in Feb http://sbb.scout.com/2/1375072.html MT @RusselHenderso1 Adrian Rondon: rare talent or mostly hype? NYY on him?
I don't think Murphy's proven to be better at this point anyway.
For all the Cervelli hate, he had one of the highest BAs in baseball with RISP and 2 outs in 2012 - somewhere near .500. Cervelli (roids or not) was better than Stewart (not saying much, I know) and if he had stayed healthy would have been the starter and I doubt McCann is here. Maybe Murphy is the regular backup in that case.
Both true.
In fact, teams probably know to within a couple thousand dollars how much they need to spend on their top 10 round picks by the end of day 2 of the draft.
You also seem to forge that the 7th rounder, Payton, is a College senior. He will be VERY cheap. The Yanks also selected Spencer and Conde (the 8th and 9th rounders) knowing they will save some $$ there as well. The Yanks didn't draft those 2 because they were the best talent options at that point in the draft- they picked them because they knew what it would take to sign them.
Further, I guarantee you that the Yanks knew the exact number it would take to sign DeCarr before they even picked him- and picked him knowing how much they would need to save on subsequent picks.
This isn't rocket science people- every team does this, and will continue to do so as long as the current draft rules concerning the top 10 rounds are in place.
Also, the only reason that nothing has come out on signing Payton, Spencer and Conte is that all 3 are still playing in the CWS, so they officially can't sign or negotiate until their team is eliminated.
While officially players can't have agents, let's just admit that there is a whole lot of wink-wink, nudge-nudge on that. When you are not a top 3 round pick, you aren't getting life-changing money, so you go for the best deal available.
In the case of Spencer and Conte, their "advisors" have made quite clear to them that they are never going to get a better deal than they will now. By being a top 10 round pick, you can get more than $100,000- which you will NOT get if you go back into the draft and enter as a college senior (because neither one will go in the top 3 rounds next year). Thus, you agree to a somewhat below slot bonus, and still get more than $100,000 (which also would not have happened if you were picked outside the top 10 rounds).
In short, the conversation with their "advisor" will be very short- the "advisor" will tell them in no uncertain terms that if they don't take the below slot agreed upon numbers, they will never see that kind of money again. The "advisor" will tell them they can have around $100,000- $110,000 now, with no strings, or they can go back in the draft and expect not even to break $10,000 in bonus next year, if that much.
Like I said, this isn't rocket science- and for MOST kids, the difference between $100,000 and $10,000 (or less) is not something they or their families can afford to pass up, no matter how much fun college is.

And finally...the one #yankees fans have waited for...OF Aaron Judge (@TheJudge44) promoted to High-A @TampaYankees from the @ChasRiverDogs.
Plus Custodio activated from the DL.
according to MLB.com, McFarland signed for $10,000- with his slot being $137,000- meaning the Yanks saved $127,000. Payton MIGHT get a LITTLE more than that, but the slot for a 7th rounder is higher too. However, Texas and Vandy play today in what could be Texas' last game (Vandy would have to lose to Texas twice for Texas to advance).
I would also expect that the Yanks have worked out a below-slot deal with Spencer (as UCal Irvine got eliminated a couple days ago). I expect Conte to get a slightly below slot deal as well.
All will be fine.

Yes. But sometimes they'll give them a week post-CWS to rest before bringing them to Tampa.
It probably won't keep him out of action for long. Banuelos, who missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery, has a 3.31 ERA and 35/11 K/BB ratio in 35 1/3 innings over 13 starts and one relief appearance this year between High-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton.
Also Chris Cabrera made his stateside debut, was once very highly touted but dealt with appendicitis and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome IIRC, might still have a ceiling though.
Drew Bridges was 2-5 with a double, one of the overslots last year and a very talented kid.
Also Jonathan Holder debuted with GCL today, probably a quick stop before SI or even CHarleston.

Charleston PP'd rain.
12th-rder Chris Gittens signs w/@Yankees for $125k ($25k counts vs pool). Grayson County (TX) CC 1B w/promising bat. @MLBDraft
Pair of @MLBDraft & @NCAACWS signings for @Yankees, two fine college bats: Texas OF Mark Payton ($45k) & UC Irvine 1B Connor Spencer ($157k)
DeCarr signed for $1M, which was $414,900 over slot.
Holder signed for $170,000, which was $67,600 UNDER slot.
McFarland signed for $10,000, which was $127,600 UNDER slot.
Payton has reportedly signed for $45,000, which would be $133,300 UNDER slot.
That only leaves Conde in the top 10 rounds- and he can't sign until after the CWS is over.
The Yanks reportedly signed Gittens for $125,000- which is $25,000 over the $100,000 cap free number.
That means that the Yanks needed to find about $440,000 to break even on their slot pool.
When we add up Holder, McFarland and Payton's reported numbers, the Yanks saved about $328,600.
We do not know what they will sign Conte for. But right now, to break even, the Yanks need to fin about $111,400. That said, we also know that the pool rules allow teams to go over by up to 5% without suffering the loss of a draft pick. Since the Yanks' draft pool was about $3,202,300, 5% of that pool would be about $160,000.
Therefore, even if Conte signs for straight slot, the Yanks would still have about $48,000 to use to sign guys drafted after the top 10 rounds over the $100,000 limit without the loss of a draft pick.
Andujar had a grand slam, a walk and another hit, as well as a great play at third. He may be ready to have a big second half.

Andujar has crushed in day games and struggled in night games. SSS, to be sure, but don't ignore the difficulty of adjusting to night games.

Well that's certainly nice to hear
A couple more notes:
Donnie Collins @RailRidersTT · 6h
Roller has hit seven homers with SWB. Would you believe he hasn't pulled one of them to right? Five to left. Two to dead center.
Also Nik Turley is back in Scranton, had an okay outing last night. 4.1 IP 5 H 3 R 3 ER 2 BB 5 K. He is off the 40-man now, but he would have been a likely call-up at some point this season. He doesn't have much AAA time but he is still a promotion possibility sometime this season, I would imagine, if he pitches well.
Refsnyder has continued to rip the cover off the ball in SWB.
Bryan Mitchell back with the Thunder. Aaron Dott to the TIL. Also, Cesar Cabral activated from DL. Carmarena sent to Tampa
I was in favor of it at the time, it seemed pretty obvious, but so far it has not looked like a good fit.
Also Fowler back in the lineup after a one-day vacation for not legging out a grounder or something like that.
Link - ( New Window )
Yea but Soriano was also a 40-40 guy. I'd be ecstatic if Refsnyder could become a guy who hit's 15-20 homers with a .280/.350/.400 slash, that is if he could turn out be a Dan Murphy level player.
Already?
..hahaha
Also Porter Clayton will either sign or transfer to a D II school in Utah, according to Oregon baseball.

I’m sure it’s out there already, but the NYPL transactions board shows Manolo Reyes has been bumped to the GCL and Jonathan Holder is at SI.

last week, Severino pitched one day, then Clarkin the next. This week Clarkin pitches today, but Severino hasn't pitched for Tampa yet, and Camarena is going tonight.
Could they be lining him up for Futures Game?
Also keep in mind that he is at 78.1 IP this year, while Clarkin is at 52.2 plus EXST. Camarena's 112 from last year is probably a reasonable expectation of where they'd like those two to be at the end of the year, maybe 120 at most. So if they can cut a start to get Severino in line for the Futures Game it makes sense.
scouts who have seen yanks' rhp prospect luis severino love him. 96-97 mph, improving change. "a young pedro" said 1
#Yankees sign RHP Jim Miller to Major League contract; option RHP Jose Ramirez to Triple-A; transfer LHP CC Sabathia to 60-day DL.
Former @USFBaseball standout Chad Taylor promoted to Low-A @ChasRiverDogs. 1 SV & 13 Ks in 7.2 IP w/ Staten Island. #Yankees #BullsInThePros
Mason Williams on the other hand had a stretch of decent results where he still didn't look that comfortable and has gone right back to suck mode.
DBJ hasn't shown the power to be a top prospect, but he's at least re-established himself as a decent prospect. Already more 2Bs than all of 2013.
Judge: 2-3 with 2B, HR, 2BB last night. .294/.467/.647 his last 10 in Tampa.
As Phil mentioned, Camarena with another nice start: 6 IP 6 H 1 R (0 ER) 1 BB 1 K
Banuelos returned from the DL (blisters I think) but got lit up.
Former top pitching prospect Heredia had another great outing in relief of Banuelos: 5.2 IP 1 H 1 BB 5 K. Good numbers on the season in Trenton: 48 IP 43 H 9 BB 51 K 2.81 ERA. Looks like they are stretching him back out as a starter.
O'Neill: 4-6 with 2 2B, 1 SB. Hit .278/.358/.433 in June after struggling early in the year. And he's 22 for 25 on SB attempts.
Andujar starting to show his raw talent: .387/.486/.581 over his last 10. Hopefully that means he's adjusting to the night games.
Katoh continues to heat up: 1-5 with a HR last night. .389/.421/.556 his last 10
And CC pitches for Trenton today
Yeah, unfortunately the disappointments have mostly been at the Trenton level (Refsnyder excluded). Don't know if it's guys being overrated/overhyped at the lower levels, poor coaching at the Trenton level, ballpark depressing their numbers or something else but hopefully it changes. Especially since Trenton's likely to get another talent infusion in the next few weeks (I imagine at least Cave/Bird should see promos).
Yanks need big 2nd halves from Sanchez/O'Brien. Even though he's yet to light up Trenton, if Murphy wasn't in SWB I'd consider promoting Sanchez and seeing what he can do there in the 2nd half.
My guess is Bird/Cave see promos to Trenton shortly. And if Judge finishes the year strong he starts 2015 in Trenton.
Duned, where has O'Brien been starting? I saw he played 1B the other day. Hopefully that's not keeping Bird down.
Does a month of Judge in Trenton really change that though? The moves to make in that regard are Refsnyder (hopefully right after the ASB) and getting Bird to AA yesterday. I think he can help a lot sooner than Judge.
And Judge has been "cold" compared to the 2-3 week stretch Refsnyder had before his SWB promo and the last 2+ plus weeks he's had.
Though, like Refsnyder, Judge is a college guy and they do seem more aggressive with them overall.
Fair enough, and I agree with that approach.
Judge seems like 2016 would be a best case for him in the Bronx. Bird on the other hand, I could see forcing his way as soon as the middle of 2015. Though maybe I've just drank too much of the Dunedin koolaid on him! And Refsnyder should be up now.
I was just thinking that Gardner may be the best, most consistent player on this team.
It shows....
Right now if Gardner, Jeter and Ellsbury don't get it done, the game is a shut out. You simply cannot have the 4-5-6 hitters batting .225. Occasionally Solarte and Ichiro chip in so basically 8-9-1-2-3 have been caring the offense.
Yes the line up is a mess. I agree with the lack of power at #3, but not so much at #2. Ellsbury should be the #1 or #2 and Gardner at the other spot, but then there is no one to drive them in anyway.
It seems Jeter is actually starting to get his swing back, but maybe it is wishful thinking.
Eh, maybe. Not nearly as bad as the others and I think he's getting better. He's consistent in his DPs no doubt, but that is nothing new. At least he's up to .270.
Yep he is down .050 OBP and .100 Slugging against his career, true, but he's had a few deeper drives lately.
they are just a bad BB team right now.

Think I'm the first on this one: confirmed Yankees signed DR OF Antonio Arias. Rumored to be around $1 million, but haven't confirmed the $.
Another NYY signing I haven't seen confirmed elsewhere: VZ OF Jonathan Amundaray. Rumored for $1.5M. Video/Report:
think he has a high ceiling but i also think he has more bust potential then most that we signed.
More unreported low $ NYY J2 signings: VZ OF Leobaldo Cabrera, VZ C Jason Lopez, DR OF Lisandro Blanco (age 17), DR IF Wander Hernandez (19)
More low $ NYY guys: VZ OF Raymundo Moreno, DR OF Adolfo Morillo, VZ OF Pablo Olivares, DR C Bismar Nunez (19), DR LHP Luis Pache (20).

Polarizing guy. I have seen a Mondesi comp (mlb.com) and a notation that he may be the best Venezuelan in the draft and I heard the Yankees got so squeamish they were trying to find a way out.
Last two of NYY July 2nd barrage (in addition to those already reported): VZ SS Danienger Perez (17), VZ RHP Gilmael Troya (17).
On top of that, 3B Dermis Garcia hasn't signed yet: supposed to be coming soon, for $3 million. So a quantity & quality carpet bombing.
Ah, yes and NYY is in play for Emery, who should get around $2 million. Massive upside/risk. RT @AndyInSunnyDB Anything on Bryan Emery yet?
NYY still could sign him, but were some rumors both sides moved on late MT @JornielMora_NYC I guess they not signing DR SS Chris Torres?
To put a button on the Yankees stuff: signed 21 players today for about $12M, will likely sign a few more in coming weeks incl. one for $3M.
Sorry, I didn't mean to rehash any old arguments or even disagree. I might have worded my post a little poorly, but I'm not faulting the Yankees for not doing this sooner. I'm just really excited they are doing it now.

Hoping for the best. We don't need five Sanos but one would make a big difference going forward.
This is what depresses me. I think our scouting by and large is pretty good. We've had talented guys in the system. The track record of developing that talent, however, is abysmal.
7/3 @TampaYankees v LKD Cave 8, Culver 6, Bird 3, Bichette 5, Judge 9, Gumbs 4, Snyder DH, Oh 7, Wilson 2, Severino 1. #Yankees.
He just took something off his slider for a third strike. He's 20 and knows how to change speeds and shapes.
Likely to be the first of the 7/2 signs to get into game action because he is older. Could conceivably join the GCL this season.
Charleston is low A? Why wouldn't a very good college player not be able to play at A ball?

Ok, just seems a waste of time to take a guy from Division 1 and place him with high schoolers. Maybe let him get acclimated to pro ball? But that is my ignorance.

And they will also have signed about 30 IFA's.
The draft kids are older and cheaper than the IFA's and it will be interesting to see which group ultimately proves most productive for the Yanks.
Congratulations to RHP @JaronLong who was just promoted to the Double-A @TrentonThunder. RHP Stefan Lopez was reactivated from Tampa's DL.
Not sure this is a permanent thing, as Dan Camarena (who has owned the FSL) was "promoted" for one start and came back. Long has more upstairs than he does in his arm, but he is interesting enough.

It has been a reasonably good year, some breakout performances (Judge and Severino, Refsnyder coming on as strong as he has) and a lot of just generally good news (Clarkin's debut, Mateo showing the tools he was advertised to have). Definitely some negatives too though, both year-ending injuries (Campos, Heathcott) but also long-term injuries that have sapped development time, like Avelino and Jagielo. Jagielo was supposed to move, but he won't get to Trenton this season at this rate. And Avelino hit well but may not have enough Low A at bats for them to be comfortable starting him at Tampa next year. Plus guys like Bird (to an extent) and Mitchell haven't had disastrous seasons but haven't necessarily taken the steps forward we hoped to see, at least not yet. Now Encinas is back at Charleston, he's another guy with front-line stuff. And Lail and Smith have been doing pretty well, so that's a rotation with a ton of talent. On the balance positive, definitely much more positive than last year, but not some sort of annus mirabilis like Boston had last year.
DBJ has already surpassed his doubles total from 2013 and has a respectable .367 OBP. On the down side, he still needs to improve his power significantly to play a corner OF spot.

Agreed. But his hitting enough and getting on base enough to make it worth their while to keep trying is going to at least get him through another level. He looked dead in the water last year. Ironically Culver looked pretty good last year and has hit like shit this year. Mason Williams was hitting for awhile but that stopped, his flaws are still there. Plays great defense and steals a ton of bases (when he gets on base) but the swing is just too long and so far the adjustments haven't worked.
As was pointed out to me last night, LHBs are hitting .065/.216/.065 against Luis Severino in Tampa. #Yankees

Only problem is that his innings are likely capped. Dunedin speculated that he'll probably be cut off around 120 IP this year, which likely means 150-160 next season.

Completely agreed with Law.
Hahaha, we're on the same page and we've gotten there at the same time. Perhaps the Tanaka injury (which is no one's fault, really) was the penultimate straw, and this was the camel back-breaker, but if Refsnyder could become even a slightly below average defender (which I don't think anyone thinks he couldn't be), his bat likely would've made him at least a decent regular. Average D and if his performance with the bat this year is real and he's a long-term solution up the middle.
Then, we have fast runners on base, and he never starts the runner. We don't hit enough HRs to win games that way anymore, but we never manufacture runs anymore. We have very fast guys in Ellsbury and Gardner, and he's still dicking around batting Jeter second.
I tend to think the opposite. Front end starting pitching is usually a function of high draft picks and we have had none. We're developing pitching, not elite talent but good BP arms and back-end starters. Where we have really struggled is developing good starting position players. As I said above we probably could have produced some decent depth/bench bats if they had been given much of a chance but they haven't. Outside of Refsnyder and Murphy though, the next handful of guys with legit shots to be average or better MLB starters are at AA (O'Brien, flawed though he is, and Austin) or below.

LF Brett Gardner
SS Derek Jeter
CF Jacoby Ellsbury
1B Mark Teixeira
DH Brian McCann
C Frankie Cervelli
RF Zelous Wheeler
3B Yangervis Solarte
2B Brendan Ryan
Who the else is going to bat 2nd?
Yes, it's a nice change.
btw, Torrens might be the best of all the catchers they've been trying to develop.
I do, however, share some of Mook's concerns. We, for a long time, hoped that at least one of the Heathcott/Austin/Williams troika would end up being a major leaguer by now. Though there's still time, it looks awfully bleak for them. I won't get into the McCann/Murphy debate, because if McCann is as good a pitch framer as the stats say he is and pitch framing is as valuable or close to as valuable as the metrics say they are, he's still been worth it. But we still haven't gotten guys to AAA and have them rake, except for Montero, whose demise still seems odd to me because I think he could've succeeded here, and Refsnyder, who is apparently now a RF and therefore a non-prospect.
And folks should be encouraged that the guys who found Severino and Torrens etc were given a blank check this year. That's going to load up the system even more. And now it's going to sort of be two tiered between college guys and teens.
If all of that is right and other teams are also locking up their best players earlier (thus getting their best years at the best price), then the Yanks financial advantage needs to be flexed elsewhere. Unfortunately, we give up first rounders in signing players to bad contracts and we didn't spend as much in IFA when there were no spending limits. We certainly don't have an advantage in player development, where we're mediocre, at best.
It's really a bleak picture, especially when our biggest advantage ($) can't be an advantage anymore. It's probably better for the game and I'm not going to bitch and moan about a level playing ground, especially when other teams do pay their stars and do draft well and contend. The Cards have done it without being cheap or picking particularly high. But as it now stands, the team has a fistful of dollars with no one to spend it on and no ability to produce its own stars, despite getting a considerable amount of talent into the minors and up to the AA level, where they then begin to fizzle out.
Phil - that's right. I don't have the data to make a strong argument that the Yanks attrition rates are considerably worse than other teams's. It just seems we can't even manage to push one high level talent through to the majors. But "seems" isn't a good argument. Hopefully the increased volume of talent leads to a couple of good major leaguers pushing through.
Kulish - You're right, but it reeks of short-termism. Refsnyder's hitting incredibly well and his defense is a project you NEED to commit to. Even if he comes up and hits reasonably well as a RF, he's not going to be a difference between our contending or not, especially with Tanaka out (I'm just assuming he's going to have TJ sooner or later). Or they're showcasing Refsnyder for a trade, probably for a big-time, big contract, probably slightly past his peak starter, which again would at best replace Tanaka, keep us in neutral and have us lose a guy who has the plus makeup and plus bat skills to make up for mediocre 2b defense.
I don't see a plan and that's the worry.
But at the same time, Cano and Melky have been a star and long term major leaguer from that corrupt brew.

I dont see a solid plan either but, I also dont see them trading Refsnyder. While I dont think calling him up and delaying his development at 2nd is good for him, I do think it is good they're even thinking about him. Hell, they had Stick personally evaluate him so, obviously they like him a lot.
We all, as Yankee fans, feel like complete ass right now and that's understandable. But, I dont think the future is as bleak as we are making in out to be at this time. The farm hasnt churned out prospects as we would like but, it's far from Mother Hubbard's cupboard either.
We were never going to be the A's and didn't need to be. But you can't overpay for every position and the great strength of our financial muscle on the major league level would be to fill in roster spots with players who are overpaid, but not cornerstone players, while we gambled on high upside talent in the minors, hoping to hit big on a couple.
I yearn for the days I would get excited for prospects. But now, it's hard for me to get excited about any of them anymore, no matter how good they're doing because, I've been disappointed too many times. Kind of like a kid waiting outside for his dad to pick him up because it's dad's weekend to have him only, dad never shows up....
Excuse me for a second, I have to go wipe some uh, sand out of my eyes.
Lol. I rarely ever go there anymore. I hated that they got rid of the board and turned it into a RAB style blog.
2) I do feel like we've been touting our low minors talent for close to a decade with little to show. Fire Mark Newman yesterday.
3) Right now everyone is locking up young players, but we'll see how long that lasts once some of these teams get burned by a Dontrelle Willis type who crashes after a fast start. There will be some level of equilibrium reached.
Don't know about no. 3. There's obviously risk with these extensions, but I doubt one Dontrelle flameout would be enough to dissuade teams from handing out reasonably cheap 4-5 year contracts after a player's 24 or 25 year season.
Anyway, they've instituted a completely different way of scouting and doing business down there, which includes a non-reliance on bathing showcases, and insisting on seeing kids in game situations and at bats. Also, Pat McMahon is now head of the academy program down there, and they are finally teaching these IFA hitters the strike zone before they come over.
So instead of having one good player and pitcher in the GCL, they now have two teams there with multiple solid to very good prospects from IFA every year. So it's not just a Vechi or a Tabata. It's a bunch of position guys and pitchers.
They used to have a Nova or an Angel Reyes, but now they have a plethora of hard throwers who can throw strikes and it's because they have an old school no bullshit scout like Donny Rowland picking the players now.
Btw, Gordon Blakely is also on the international stuff, and he was a guy we stole away from the Mariners back in the late nineties and he found Edgar Martinez when he was with them.
Phil, that's all fine, but like I said yesterday - I trust the Yankees scouting, but not their minor league development system. I don't suspect Rowland, but I have zero faith in Newman.
Brian Sabean?
Can't imagine NoMaas makes any money now either.
At the same time, it is also true that development becomes much easier when you have players. Look at Judge. This could be a three level year for him. And it could be one for Severinon. They happen to be outstanding and there seems to be no problem with their development.
For awhile we didn't have anyone quite as good as these guys. But the better the players the easier the development, seemingly. And the lack of great players is on Hal, and those corrupt guys in the DR.
DBJ: 3-5, 2B, HR. He's already surpassed last season's XBH total and has a respectable .371 OBP for the season. His OPS is creeping up to .800 as well. He might be due for a promo soon, though the Trenton OF is pretty full.

DBJ: 3-5, 2B, HR. He's already surpassed last season's XBH total and has a respectable .371 OBP for the season. His OPS is creeping up to .800 as well. He might be due for a promo soon, though the Trenton OF is pretty full.
Judge: 2-4, HR, BB - 13 HRs on the season (4 in 20 Tampa games). Now has a .275/.425/.536 line in Tampa (.320/.427/.959 on the season).
RDP: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K. That's 4 great starts in a row (22.1 IP, 17 H, 3 ER, 6 BB, 19 K).
DBJ has also taken reps at 3B. I was going to say it would make sense to promote him when Jagielo came back but he seems to have had a setback in his rehab. Either way, I'd like to see Cave and DBJ at Trenton, maybe send Gamel up to Scranton as he has been very good.
Thanks. Didn't realize he was still taking reps at 3B. If he can play adequately defensively at 3B and a corner OF spot, it could help his chances.
I was hoping Bird would get a promo too, but he hasn't been lighting it up. He's been solid, but no Judge/Refsnyder streak (yet).
J.Mateo has a sore hand. I. Clarkin has a sprained ankle. A. Avelino will start rehab games tomorrow. Jagielo may return next wk. #Yankees
Good news on Clarkin. With the Yanks minor league pitching woes, I was fearing the worst.
Bird has hit reasonably well but between the late start and the somewhat underwhelming power performance he probably stays at Tampa this year unless he goes on a tear.
Torrens has a lot of talent. Probably not Sanchez's raw power but a better hit tool and the defense is a lot more fluid, he has gotten praise since he came stateside for his abilities behind the dish.
ROSTER UPDATE: SS Vince Conde (@vince_VU3), '14 9th rd pick & recent CWS Champion w/ @VandyBaseball, has been added to the S.I. roster.
Wonder if he'll split time with Estrada at SS or what they have in mind for him.

The concern someone raised on the PP forum, and it was a fair point. At this time of year the obvious concern for those of us who think we're not a player or two away is that they're trying to showcase him for a deal.

they are being very aggressive with Severino.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were. The Refsnyder move reeks of an attempt to get him to the Bronx too.
I have close to no faith in this FO anymore.
Last game or two before their break he was at 2B.
To be fair, they did trade him for a young pitcher who they thought could be a rotation anchor.
If Cave continues to progress, he's a strong trade candidate. Cashman has made it clear he wants a power bat in RF and Cave isn't that, at least not yet (Gardner could of course be traded). He does have a cannon for an arm though.
Gamel I could see but I'd be really surprised if Fowler got more than a cup of coffee at Tampa this year (course the same could have been said for Severino and Trenton) just because he's a prep kid and he got to Charleston late, with just shy of 200 ABs.
Doesn't seem like it was a good idea to get attached to him anyway. He sucks.
Quote:
u are right. i didn't think they would trade montero with his hit tool, but they did.
Doesn't seem like it was a good idea to get attached to him anyway. He sucks.
A lot of people thought Montero was going to be a very good player. To date it hasn't worked out, but he is still just 24 years old and has hit reasonably well this year at AAA and briefly at the major league level.
That said, Sanchez is a very different player. Hit tool isn't comparable, power is though Sanchez doesn't flash what Montero did in the minors, but defensively there is no comparison. Sanchez has a lot of work to do but he has believers, the question isn't whether he can catch but how good he can be. For Montero the question was can he catch at all and it has been answered in the negative.
The real point I'm making is that people get attached to prospects and really they just are prospects. Whatever a guy's minor league performance and scouting reports there's still a chance he will never reach his projection in the majors. I'd say that prospects are probably a bit overvalued right now in the trade market. It's probably a better time to be a buyer than seller.
Jagielo was 1-4 with an RBI BTW.
There's plenty of hope. Some of these guys will fail, indeed probably most of them will fail, but they're set up to push starters at a number of positions into the high minors over the next 12 months. And while you'd love to see a congo line of Top 25 prospects heading toward the bigs like the Cubs, this is, realistically speaking, about the best we're going to do.
Yeah I'm hoping for the best but I'll believe it when I see it. It isn't a coincidence that Refsnyder is having as much success as a Yankee hitter has had in years and he was an advanced college bat whose approach owes little to their developmental staff.
It's easy enough to blame Austin's wrist injury but he wasn't hitting that well before it. Williams just has a long swing and his approach isn't great, he has the speed and is a plus defender but if he can't hit enough it won't matter.
Sanchez isn't much of an issue. His defense has improved and it isn't out of the ordinary for a defender playing a position like SS or especially catcher to have some offensive struggles. He is hitting well enough and likely will continue to hit well enough as he progresses. Austin is primarily a 1B/DH at this point, which is already not as valuable, but the bat still has potential. Williams needs to really overhaul his approach at the plate if he's ever going to maximize his physical gifts.

or TA amount to anything. Sanchez's hitting has stagnated. The contact hasn't come along.

While it certainly isn't impossible for things to click for either MW or TA, the odds are against it at this point. My worry with Sanchez is the contact rate. He's been a mediocre hitter for contact for a while now. Now the home/road splits are promising, since he's hitting pretty well on the road, but Sanchez seems like he needs another year or two to really polish the bat.

Only one Yankees farmhand in @keithlaw's latest top 50, and its not Sanchez or Severino. It's Aaron Judge. http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/11223667/mlb-keith-law-top-50-mlb-prospects … ($)

Also Manny Barreda was released and Jairo Heredia went down to AA.
He's got quite a few XBHs in that time frame too (mostly 2Bs)
Heard Johnny Damon on Buster Olney's podcast yesterday while I was in the car. Buster asked him who the best teammates he ever had were. He named 4, Mike Sweeney, Jermaine Dye, Jason Giambi, and Alex Rodriguez. Didn't mention Jeter at all. I thought Buster did a poor job of not following up and asking him about Jeter as a teammate. He was raving about ARod as a teammate

I don't know why not making his Top 4 is all that newsworthy, especially when they competed against each other as long as they did. A-Rod's time in NY and Damon's time in Boston only overlapped by a couple of years and A-Rod was considered an interloper for years (as was Damon) so the idea that they would hit it off isn't surprising.

Did the 5 of them share needles?
Well at least he has progressed to throwing off a mound. It's a start. I would love for him to come back and see what he can do.
#Yankees signed 15th round pick LHP Andrew Chin of Boston College. RS sophomore and Newton native was weekend starter. (per @BCBirdBall)

Yeah and $225 is not an insignificant bonus, he was a name signing that year. But let's not let the facts get in the way of a good story...
Aune hit his first HR today and is up to .245 on the year (OPS is probably in the .670s now). He still has a ways to go but its the first sign of progress he has shown in 24 months.
Jonathan Holder went 3.1 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ER 1 BB 4 Ks.
Tejeda is still pretty young and could start moving after his good showing in SI. He initially looked like a bonus prospect a few years ago.
21st round Porter Clayton - will either sign or go to a college close to his home in Utah
22nd round Jake Kelzer - says he is going back to school
23rd round Will Toffey - probably don't have the $
25th round Dylan Barrow - he's probably the best chance we have at a meaningful 11th hour signing
29th round Mo Jr. - could sign, could go back to school, who knows?
30th round Jorge Perez - IDFK, don't know where he is pitching this summer (if he is) or how he is doing.
32nd round Jordan Ramsey - Says is going back to school
33rd round David Graybill - signing plans really aren't clear
35th round Chris Hudgens - probably goes to college
36th round William Gaddis - probably goes to college
39th round Cameron Warren - probably goes to college
40th round Madison Stokes - says is going to college
Jonathan Holder went 3.1 IP 4 H 2 R 2 ER 1 BB 4 Ks.
You forgot Lindgren, who struck out the side in his 1 IP in Tampa!
Don't look now, but Andujar is starting to figure things out in Charleston. Still only 19. After a poor April and a horrid May (.182/.229/.293), he's been raking in July (.362/.456/.532) and his season numbers are creeping up to respectability. Hopefully he finishes strong and starts next year off in Tampa (though at least 1 of DBJ and/or Jagielo would likely need a promo to make room).
Banuelos made another start in Trenton, but did not fare well. Hopefully he can stay healthy and start shaking off some of the rust.
Banuelos had a rocky first, settled down for the rest of the outing though. This year is going to be a(nother) lost year for him, next year he'll swim or he'll sink and become a 40-man question mark.

Heh. I totally forgot about that guy.
Hot Dog AD (IBC cards): Would you agree that Luis severino is the best Yankees pitching prospect of the last decade?
Ben Badler: No. At the time they were prospects, Joba and Hughes were ahead of where Severino is now.
Ben Badler: Much better than I expected. You don't see many long-armed hitters like him with his plate coverage and ability to square the ball up with the frequency he's shown, along with the leverage and strength to clear the fence like he can.
Aaron Doorman (Riverboat): Luis Torrins, Andrew Romine or Jr Murphy?
Ben Badler: Torrens all day. If the receiving and blocking come along, and I expect they will, he's their catcher of the future.
Ryan (Brick, NJ): Why is Gary Sanchez so highly regarded? I know he's still young for his league, but he's never really had a monster season yet.
Ben Badler: Two power tools in his arm strength and raw power at a premium position, but I do think his value is overstated.

Bichette still a np? I'm trying not to read too much into the stat line but its way better than last year.
Klaw (2:07 PM)
Correct. Yeah, better than last year, but still not good - and a good chunk of his production came in the first few weeks of the season, before pitchers adjusted to him. Also can't play third.
james (NJ)
Is Severino being rushed? And when should Judge be promoted? Thanks Keith!
Klaw (2:07 PM)
Yes, and no rush on Judge. Maybe give him a few weeks in Trenton to the end the year, or offer to send him to Fall League if he's not too worn out.
Just learned a change was made to protect 1st round picks of the teams with the 10 worst records, regardless of the "top ten" wording.
It gives us some rationale (however bad it might be) why the Yanks are sticking with Roberts at 2b. I figure from this article that the plan long-term is to have Refsnyder at 2b but for the purposes of injecting some life into the lineup, they'd bring him up as a RF this year, if they did so at all. I like that Cashman's first preference is to have Refsnyder stay at AAA all year while getting reps at 2b (though I wish they'd give him solely 2b time).
O'Brien went 5-7 (2 2B, 1 HR) combined in the DH. He's been hitting much better in July after a horrid June.
Austin singled in both games and his hit streak is now at 8 games. His average is creeping up to respectability but the power still isn't there.
Now he's gone, and Omar Luis, though left handed, takes his place as our high upside fastball guy who's had a career interruption.
Also Caleb Smith with an excellent outing, 6 IP 2 H 1 R 1 ER 0 BB and 5 Ks.

Yankees & Padres discussing deal that would send Ian Kennedy to Yankees in exchange for Eric Jagielo and Ian Clarkin according to a source
FUCK NO. I like Kennedy. I am not giving that much up for Kennedy. I don't even want to give up one of them.
Link - ( New Window )
yankees are interested in kennedy but not in clarkin plus jagielo for kennedy.
Meanwhile, I wonder if Eppler and a medium prospect would be the compensation for Eppler.
They tried to get comp for Sabean back in the day, but that wasn't in season.
Ian Kennedy is not a good pitcher.
Austin with back-to-back games with a HR. Hitting .417/.436/.694 over his last 10. Hopefully it's a sign he's finally over his wrist injury and not just a SSS.
Bird's got an 8 game hit streak with 3 2B, 3 HR, and 6:4 BB:K over that span.

Yeah the three of them are hitting well and if they can keep it up it'll be a real positive. I've said it a few times but on the whole this has been a pretty good year for the farm. A couple injuries (Campos, Heathcott) and some nonperformance (Mason Williams) but most of the prospects have performed at or above expectations and some have blown them out of the water.

it's about time they got in on one of these guys. It makes me a bit nuts that they've seemed to not be able to spend on any of these players. How good would Cespedes, Puig or Abreu look in pinstripes now? We'll probably get this guy and he'll suck.
wish he was healthy .... because i think he could really flay thru the system

The @TampaYankees place OF Claudio Custodio on the DL and activate OF Yeicok Calderon from the DL.
Custodio is close. 21/23 on SBs this year, had 29 singles and 8 walks so he stole around 2/3 of the time he was on 1B. He probably stole third a few times but then again he probably had runners on 2B a couple of the times he didn't go.
Pineda will make a start sun officially starting his rehab clock. Expected to throw 60-65 pitches. Not sure where start will be yet #yankees
#yankess Severino 93-96; downhill, explosive. CH 84-86; good arm action, arm-side fade. SL 84-87; small breaker, tight.

The @TampaYankees send RHPJhon Morban back to the GCL. RHP Philip Walby (Phillip @ASAP_Walby) transferred from Low-A @ChasRiverDogs to Tampa
Trouble in the first inning, escaped with limited damage thanks to a Luis Torrens snap throw, then set down the final five guys he faced, including three in a row by strikeout.
I thought he was slow as hell.
