NYG LB Jon Beason has sesamoid fracture in right foot. Surgery required. Expected 12 week recovery, according to someone aware of diagnosis.
Camp has begun, which means it's time for this post again. First off, there are two variants of the PUP list - active PUP and reserve PUP. Active PUP is the list that guys who can't go at the start of camp get placed on and can be activated off at any time during camp. Reserve PUP is the list that if you started on the active PUP and by the time week 1 rolls around still aren't ready to hit the roster you go on - this has the minimum out the first 6 weeks rule.
Now, here is the one huge catch - if you practice (*Training camp here, not OTAs), at all, even 1 snap on one day, YOU CANNOT GO ON THE PUP (either variant). Even if on that one play you tear out a meniscus and need to miss 6-8 weeks - one snap = NO PUP.
For those who go on the active PUP (read: Beckum), by the end of the preseason if they are still on it there are 4 options: activate to 53 man roster, place on IR (out for year), release, or go to reserve PUP. The reserve PUP rules are as follows:
- Weeks 1-6: OUT. Not allowed to practice.
- After week 6 a three week window opens for the player to return to practice but still not be on the 53 man roster. This window can be activated anywhere between weeks 7 and 9. If by the end of this window the player is not ready to return to practice, your choices are IR or release.
- Once the player returns to practice, a second three week window opens during which time the player can practice but still not be on the 53 man roster. At the end of this window the player must be activated to the 53 man roster, placed on IR or released.
- By strategically using the rules, a player placed on the reserve PUP could return to the 53 man roster as soon as week 7 or as late as week 13. You do not need to use the full time of the two windows if the player is ready to return, but if extra time is needed you can wait the full 3 weeks to return to practice and have 3 more weeks from there as a non-roster practice player before returning to the 53 man roster and being eligible to play in games.

LB Jon Beason suffered a ligament tear and a small fracture to the sesamoid in his right foot. Read more: http://bit.ly/1lt2zpx
the ligament tear is probably why he needs surgery
Where I thank Jerry Reese for using a lot of team resources on the linebacker unit.I knew all those 5th round picks and unrestricted free agents would pay dividends.
The prognosis is X amount of time and it (the Sept. 8 opener) is within that timeframe, Beason said today. I expect to be back (for that game.)"
We havent decided if its something thats invasive or something that you just kind of let heal on its own. The timeframe is about the same, but its not season-ending, so Im happy about that.
The treatment options will be determined after Dr. Anderson examines Beason and consults with Dr. OMalley. Anderson is the team orthopedist of the Carolina Panthers, for whom Beason played from 2007 until his trade to the Giants last Oct. 4. Anderson operated on Beasons torn Achilles tendon in 2011.
He knows my body, Beason said. I think the world of him. I was impartial to doing it here with Dr. OMalley, but I think they wanted to make me feel comfortable to go down there and get a second opinion. He wants to do some more tests to determine what he thinks is best and then those two will sit down and figure out the best plan for me.
is very little good news here. They are not even sure when he will return. They haven't made a full evaluation yet and haven't decided on the best way to treat this.

Eric - that's the glass half full approach. Practically speaking, there were a lot of different ways that Beason could've been done for the year, so even though it looks like he might end up missing half of it, we're still far from the worst case scenario.
I had that in my youth and didn't even have a cast ... It was kept wrapped in an ace bandage ... I couldn't wear a shoe so we just cut the front off a sneaker ... and I hobbled around for a month or so ...
Mine may have been minor ... and then surgery wasn't even an option ... we're talking 55 years or more ago ...
a definite time table yet or a definite decision on surgery is because Beason wants to see his doctor in NC and see what he decides becaue he trusts him and did the surgery on his knee and achilles...
He is not going to miss half a season..my prediction 2 to 3 games at the most..
It's a bump in the road but it could've been worse

the bone, as the bone will heal. Tears are much trickier and that's why he'll also need surgery. IMO, he'll be out much longer then the estimated 12 weeks. If we see him by the 2nd quarter of the season, we could consider ourselves lucky.
Do the Giants try to sign another vet LB? Is Conner still out there? I know he is also an injury waiting to happen, but he knows the D now too.
but, fortunately they brought in McClain and it means Kennard will get more reps. Hopefully, Giants can prove capable of drafting a starter quality linebacker.
if the question is watch and wait vs surgery, given the time table, I'd hope they opt for having the procedure done ASAP to get him back early in the season.

Hope Kennard also proves to be a quality LB. It would be a pleasant and much needed surprise.
RE: RE: Use some of that cap space and bring Vilma in..
at least you would have a player who could man the middle for half a season or so.
Beason is not going to miss half the season...
I'm willing to bet he does. PuP is almost certain, and then after the 6 weeks they have another what, 3 week window to activate him? wuth no camp, I'm willing to bet he doesn't see any action till after the bye.

if he recovers in line with the 12 week time table he'll be activated off PUP prior to the end of camp.
we'll see. Remember what I said, though. It wouldn't suprise me a bit if he doesn't play till week 12, and then is only active on the roster but sees little playing time.he's not a young guy, has an injury history, and after the 3 months, will then have to get into game shape.I think they handle him the same way they handled Kuhn last year, and he was basically ready to go , had they really wanted, during camp.I see them making other plans and hoping he rounds into shape if they make the playoffs. Otherwise I don't think he does much this year. Just my take on it.hope I'm wrong.
all the various amateur diagnosis' that were listed on yesterday's thread, and sesamoid wasn't one of them. BBI lets me down again.
amateur that I am, I'll put in my prognosis: he's out for all of camp. he's hobbled (if active) the first half the season. he's hobbled a little less the second half the season. Next year, we'll see what shakes out.
He can miss 2 weeks. Reality is they are lucky

seriously does this happen to any other teams?
it seems every year the very first practice of Giants season - a player goes down from no contact with serious injury
Seriously? sean lee says hi, sean witherspoon of the falcons says hi,
Could be a lot worse...
Give it time son.
And it's not Sean Lee.
Sign a vet; NM^; good thing that UDFA is learning quickly.
In any case:
Get well quickly, Jon!

Beason - get well soon.
Jon Beason says "I expect to be back" for the Opener, but "If not, Ill be back as soon as I can."
This could have been way worse......

And, he could be a quick healer, so all in all it's not that bad, plus you give a younger player more reps hopefully in training camp.
Beason strikes me as a guy who, if healthy, steps right in and makes an impact..............

Likely? Probably not. But it's happened before with the Giants.

3 month recovery means 3 days before game 1...he probably misses game 1 and possibly game 2 at the most...
For everyone thinking the 6 weeks means Sept. 5, I'm pretty sure the 6 weeks is from the surgery, and he ain't had that yet.

Got a hold of his charts, doc?
Are we really surprised by this given Beason's extensive injury history? The guy has been made of glass.

Sorry, meant 12 weeks
If he has any more good news I will pass it on...
He missed two seasons because of it. And played 13 games last year.
