Giants football: Change the future

Bramton1 : 7/2/2014 4:59 pm
Because it's the offseason...

If you had a time machine, but could only use to change one event in Giants history, what would it be?

Perhaps you go to 1978 and tell Piscarik to down the ball. "The hell with what the coach said." Maybe it's to 1989, and tell Reyna Thompson to take a step back before the snap, or tell Simms to run the ball out and get to halftime in the playoff game against the Rams. Or perhaps it's to 2010, and tell Matt Dodge to kick the fucking ball out of bounds.

Ignore the future season implications that such an action would entail. We'll still hire George Young, we'll still win the Super Bowl in 86,90, 07, and 11.

Personally, I'd go to 2008. "Hey Plax, safety's off."
Yeah,
Giantology : 7/2/2014 5:03 pm : link
My first thought was 2008. Especially if we had a healthy Osi along with Plaxico... no doubt in my mind that we win back to back championships.
2010 against philly
ANGPASS : 7/2/2014 5:06 pm : link
"Hey special teams, watch the onside kick"
"Hey Manningham, protect the ball"
"Hey Dodge,".....(Gun shots)

Trainmaster : 7/2/2014 5:16 pm : link
1) My first thought was the Plaxico incident in 2008. Probably on the top of the list of "Missing Rings". The team was on a 25-5 run (14-4 in the 2007 reg season and playoffs not including the first two games and 11-1 in the first 12 games of the 2008 season).

I don't like the "Ignore the future season implications ", so I am considering them. Therefore, I'm not sure I want to mess with anything in the 1978 / 1979 timeframe as I want us to end up with LT in 1981. Even the horrible "15 years of lousy football" might have been somewhat worth it in order to get LT and the 1986 and 1990 championships.

2) I'd have the refs throw the pass interference flag on the missed FG in the 2002 Giants-49ers playoff game. We may have been Tampa Bay and then would likely have beated the Raiders. Another "Missing Ring".

3) Wasn't there a chance that the Giant could have gotten Reggie White in the mid 1980s (I don't recall the circumstances); I think I like that a lot.

4) Give Parcells and Belichick huge raises (deservedly so)after the 1990 season so that one or both stay and we're not subjected to R*y H*ndl*y.

5) The Flipper Anderson TD in OT in 1989? The Giants call time out and get the injured Mark Collins off the field.

Plax not shooting himself
Ben in Tampa : 7/2/2014 5:24 pm : link
probably wouldn't have sealed us a back-to-back championship, but the Giants offense would have had a lot more juice. How do you help that defense though?
To be On Topic
Ben in Tampa : 7/2/2014 5:25 pm : link
I'd go back to the 49ers Playoff game to get the right penalty called and give us a shot to go to Tampa Bay.

Taking either Gayle Sayers or Dick Butkis instead of Tucker Fredrickson.
Not making the trade with the Cowboys for Craig Morten, keeping our pick and taking Randy White.
Not sure of the years above and to lazy to look them up.
Hire Lombardi as HC instead of letting him go to Green Bay.

"Look man, this guy is a crazier asshole than you...he blocks like an animal and scores touchdowns AND PEOPLE don't care he took a naked picture of himself standing next to a Pornstar wearing his jersey"

Then I'd show Tiki the entire 2007 season in 2006

I'd go to Welly.......

Gotta go with Plax
Jupiter : 7/2/2014 7:31 pm : link
Giants were the dominant team in the NFL that year. Plax issue completely changed the season.
Frederickson backstory? Remember?
Jupiter : 7/2/2014 7:35 pm : link
I remember that there was a quirky reason why the Giants got to pick first and picked Tucker, but I apologize for not remembering the details.

Can I jog someone else's memory? Something about Auburn being in the Giants territory and the Giants had to pick someone from one of its territorial schools or they wouldn't be able to pick first? Did I dream this?
The Lombardi Suggestion
Trainmaster : 7/2/2014 7:47 pm : link
is a great one. I'm not sure of all the details, but I think Lombardi becoming a NYG head coach is a credible "What If?". Probably more credible than the "hire Belichick instead of H*ndl*y" one given George Young's apparent distain for Belichick.

I like the Randy White one too, but those 70s teams were so lousy, I'm not sure he would have made big difference.

Dumbfuck, Belichick was the DEFENSIVE coordinator. Let's not even talk about your Eagles drivel.
BBI can change much,
oldog : 7/2/2014 9:31 pm : link
and decide much, but they cannot remove the bitter feel of disappointment that Johhny Unitas bestowed, that lasted so many years, until the new Johnny, now called Eli, erased it forever in 7 and 11, as he will do again in 14.

And, this guy olddog, somehow I get the feeling he's going to be telling us a story about meeting Tommer at Hash's RC store...
I never said he was previously offensive
oldog : 7/2/2014 9:53 pm : link
coordinator, sorry for misleading you, do you really think he couldn't have gone on as offensive coordinator? To draft Brady, or influence the draft of a QB, who would let him as defensive coordiator influence such a choice. But your point is well made.

For me I hate the losses to SF the worst of all, next to the old Baltimore wounds, and still seethe over the Cleveland Browns. But as much fun as it is to imagine the bounces go in our favor, and we won those matchups, the touches by SF in 11 make up for a lot. If we win earlier, do we forgo 7 and 11? Both were so special. it was not hard to wait a mere 48 or so years. Watch any good scifi time travel flick, when things change you lose as well as win, I'll take our luck so far, and look to the future.
Messing with the past is dangerous,
oldog : 7/2/2014 10:00 pm : link
but, Mike in Philly is RIGHT, that missed field goal was the one true injustice that was only partially corrected in 2011.

at the risk of losing some of the intensity and purity of BBI, and at some risk to their quality and insistence on literal accuracy,I would try to make toungue in cheek, and a sense of when someone might be pulling their leg, just a little more widespread on BBI.
Definately,

Yeah, probably the Flipper TD
Jimmy Googs : 7/2/2014 10:16 pm : link
or the botched field goal in San Fran. Those games still hurt to some degree with the "what could have been...".

The 2010 meltdown against Philly hurt too, but that Giant team didn't have the superbowl feel.

A) Giants would have still had to go to Philly to win the NFC championship if the beat the 49ers and Bucs. Not an impossible task, but no gimme either.

B) You can't not "Ignore the future" with 78 and not do the same for 2002. If that team makes it to the NFC Championship or the Superbowl, its unlikely Fassel gets fired after 2003 (Regardless of the record), which means no TC and possibly no Eli. Which could put '07 and '11 off the table.
A couple things mentioned I wouldn't change
BillT : 7/3/2014 8:42 am : link
"The Fumble" brought us George Young, Bill Parcells and two SBs. Tucker Fredricson was a terrific football player until he got hurt which was, unfortunately, almost immediately. Sayers career was cut short due to injury as well. And the non call on the PI vs. the 49ers contributed to the TC hiring and two more SBs. Sometimes it's best to leave things be.
Lombardi as HC is the best idea.
81_Great_Dane : 7/3/2014 11:47 am : link
I wouldn't touch The Fumble because you can't fix that without undoing all that came after.

The Flipper Anderson game is second on my list. Stop that INT before the half, or get Collins off the field, whatever.

I don't think anything was going to get Parcells to stay in 1990 and Young didn't want Little Bill. Foolish choice by Young, but there it is.

Plax and the gun? I think Plax was a meltdown waiting to happen. He'd have just done something else. Not an evil guy, just a guy who never quite "got it."

If Tim Mara
Steve in South Jersey : 7/3/2014 11:56 am : link
had died before "The Fumble" the Giants might not have any of their Super Bowl championships.

Thank you Tim Mara for standing up for and end to mismanagement.
If I could change only one thing from the past?
Phil in Joisey : 7/3/2014 5:21 pm : link
I'd change the unsuccessful first down measurement on Gifford's carry in the closing minutes of the Giants-Colts classic Championship Game in 1958. If that's a first down (and it most likely was) the Giants run out the clock and there is no overtime and we are the champions 17-14.

#2 and #3 would be to rectify the failures of management and appoint Vince Lombardi and Bill Belichick our Head Coach instead of Sherman and Hanley.
Without a doubt, 2008
SGMen : 7/3/2014 10:17 pm : link
I honestly believe that the "shot" left the team shot emotionally as much as anything else. Had Plax and Pierce been 100% down the stretch who is to say we would not have had back to back rings.

Yes, our defense was dinged late but come playoffs guys can step up a bit even hurt. Heck, everyone is hurt that late in the year!
Keep in mind that before Belichik became the
Gman11 : 7/4/2014 1:10 pm : link
Super Bowl winning coach in New England, he was a head coach that was run out of Cleveland.

If he was head coach after Parcells left which one would the Giants have gotten? They probably would have gotten the Cleveland Bill who needed that experience to eventually become the New England Bill.

Anyone going back to 1978
djm : 7/4/2014 1:41 pm : link
Trying to change anything needs to be stopped dead in their tracks.

The best thing to happen to the giants was the fumble. If was at that game I'd cheer that play.

When Brian Westbrook returned the PR in 2003 and all but pulled the plug on fassel's life support line, I wasn't really upset at all. I won't lie I kind of enjoyed it. I knew that play would seal the deal and force a reboot. I knew the giants would make a big move that off season and low n behold they hire coughlin and trade for Eli.

I'm not even sure I'd fuck with 2008. That team was fading down the stretch with or without plax. Maybe plax's presence helps them win the philly playoff game it's certainly possible but they did win the bowl again in 2011z I wouldn't change a thing from 78 until now. I've seen more Super Bowl titles most fans have. Hasn't anyone seen back to the future? Paradox! Time ripple shit. Don't fuck with anything.

I'd go back to last off season and not watch.
Or if there is no negative fallout from a change
djm : 7/4/2014 1:43 pm : link
I'd go back to 1988 and take out al toon in the week 16 finale and allow the giants to win that game.

The 88 giants weren't very good but the NFC sucked that year. We could have beaten the niners that year.
change the future
blue1986 : 7/5/2014 9:16 pm : link
Don't forget the 1997 playoff against Minnesota. when we are leading by 2 touchdowns and are getting ready to score again
on the Minnesota 2 yard line Tikki Barber fumbles. It changes the whole momentum of the game and Minnesota scores before the half. We fall apart after halftime, they come back and win the game by 2 points on a last minute pass from Randal Cunningham to that Reed receiver. Fassel should have benched Tikki for Rodney Hampton who was fresh off his injury and was running hard Tikki fumble twice in that game.

Draft Brad Johnson in rd. 5 of the 1992 NFL Draft instead of Michael Wright. Forego drafting Dave Brown. Take Dale Carter (pro bowl CB, maybe we lose out on sehorn in the future) in rd. 1. Rest of the draft can stand pat.

I don't find anything about the early mid 90's that would've thrown us off track to 07 and '11.

Played around with the following.

* Derek Brown gets replaced by chester mcglockton
* Issac Bruce replaced Thomas Lewis in '94 draft
* Curtis Martin instead of Tyrone Wheatley in '95
* Chris Calloway doesn't fumble the onside kick vs the Vikings in the 97 playoffs and Danny Kannell kneels the Giants to a second round...loss against SF.
* Not Giants related but man I wish Buffalo beat Washington or at least took one against dallas
* JUST KEEP BRAD MAYNARD AND WE NEVER HAVE TO DEAL WITH MATT DODGE
