Has not received enough attention...versatile could play anywhere in the secondary, three times he had eight interceptions in a season, excellent punter, even played some running QB in an emergency.
Seeing the photo from 1971 of the Giants secondary with Lockhart, Williams, Green...reminds of that awful trade the Giants made prior to the season sending a 1972 first round draft pick to Chicago for Bennie McCrae a veteran CB who played in only 7 games in his Giants career and Bob Hyland.
Also interesting how small players were back then compared to now.
Was George Shaw QB who was acquired from Baltimore before the 1959 season for a one and a two, the one was sent to SF by the Colts and became Billy Kilmer.
Of course Kilmer's presence in SF along with John Brodie and Bob Waters made Y.A. Tittle expendable.
Shaw was later traded to Minnesota after the 1960 season for a one which the Giants sent to LA and became Roman Gabriel.
Despite Shaw's promise as a player that caused both the Giants and Vikings to trade for him, he struggled filling in for Conerly in 1960 and was surpassed by a rookie named Fran Tarkenton in Minnesota.
Interestingly with Heinrich and Shaw to backup Conerly, the Giants actually waived their 1959 first round draft choice Lee Grosscup a QB although he would join the Giants again in 1960. The also waived their number two pick an end named Buddy Dial who unlike Grosscup they weren't able to keep around as he was claimed by Pittsburgh and became one of the NFL's top deep threats in the early 60's.
Frank Gifford also had a tryout at QB in the 1959 preseason practices.
Heinrich would go to Dallas in the 1960 expansion allocation.

Thank you as always for sharing.
