from the '48 to the '50 uniforms. When did helmets go from leather to plastic?

Crazy seeing Tom Landry in a football uniform after having grown up watching him on the sidelines of Giants/Cowboys games.

Thank you as always for sharing.
Here's a good one.

Giants-Bears 10/23/49 Polo Grounds
The Giants wearing plastic shells and the Bears still wearing leather hats (and orange pants!)

Nice.

Interesting how teams wore same colors

prior to TV, I bet that was the norm.
The NFL passed the rule that one team had to wear white
truebluelarry : 7/9/2014 9:36 am : link
in 1957. Prior to that color-vs-color match-ups were common. In 1956 the Bears, Rams and Packers only had one jersey.

Has not received enough attention...versatile could play anywhere in the secondary, three times he had eight interceptions in a season, excellent punter, even played some running QB in an emergency.

Seeing the photo from 1971 of the Giants secondary with Lockhart, Williams, Green...reminds of that awful trade the Giants made prior to the season sending a 1972 first round draft pick to Chicago for Bennie McCrae a veteran CB who played in only 7 games in his Giants career and Bob Hyland.

Also interesting how small players were back then compared to now.

Did the giants
BIG FRED : 7/9/2014 10:31 am : link
also practice @ Yankee stadium once the baseball season was over or did they just do walkthroughs the day before the home games ?
thanks Larry, Good stuff
Victor in CT : 7/9/2014 10:41 am : link
BIG FRED, yes they did. Many of the players lived at the old Stadium Hotel during the season

The only other Giant to wear a number in the teens in 1959

Was George Shaw QB who was acquired from Baltimore before the 1959 season for a one and a two, the one was sent to SF by the Colts and became Billy Kilmer.

Of course Kilmer's presence in SF along with John Brodie and Bob Waters made Y.A. Tittle expendable.

Shaw was later traded to Minnesota after the 1960 season for a one which the Giants sent to LA and became Roman Gabriel.

Despite Shaw's promise as a player that caused both the Giants and Vikings to trade for him, he struggled filling in for Conerly in 1960 and was surpassed by a rookie named Fran Tarkenton in Minnesota.

Interestingly with Heinrich and Shaw to backup Conerly, the Giants actually waived their 1959 first round draft choice Lee Grosscup a QB although he would join the Giants again in 1960. The also waived their number two pick an end named Buddy Dial who unlike Grosscup they weren't able to keep around as he was claimed by Pittsburgh and became one of the NFL's top deep threats in the early 60's.

Frank Gifford also had a tryout at QB in the 1959 preseason practices.

Heinrich would go to Dallas in the 1960 expansion allocation.
Thanks Victor

Willie Williams 41 and Joe Green 33, not sure who is in sweats...if it's another DB then it may be Otto Brown.
