Giants No. 19 in ESPN Pre-Season Power Rankings

Too low, too high, just right?
Giants No. 19 in ESPN Pre-Season Power Rankings - ( New Window )
Until . . .
TheManUpstairs : 7/15/2014 1:03 pm : link
. . . we find out if there's an OL on this team, which completely controls whether the G-Men can run the ball OR throw it, I don't have a huge problem with that ranking. I suspect they'll be a good bit better than that, because they HAVE to be healthier.
I may think they are better than that
BillT : 7/15/2014 1:22 pm : link
But I don't think they should be ranked higher than that. They have to go out and show that they are a competitive team. They have to stay healthy. They have to get top performances from their top players. Their young players have to continue to improve. Lots to do to earn a higher ranking than that.
Lots of Eagles love

I dont see it

way too low
Seems
AcidTest : 7/15/2014 1:40 pm : link
fair. Lots of additions in FA, but how will they blend. Other questions remain, especially on the OL, and we were awful last year.

6. Green Bay Packers
7. Indianapolis Colts
8. Arizona Cardinals

12 Chicago Bears
13 Baltimore Ravens
14 Atlanta Falcons
15 Kansas City Chiefs
16 San Diego Chargers

18 St. Louis Rams

I don't think we're better than any of those 18 teams, regardless of the order they're listed in.
falcons, chargers, rams
CruzShip52 : 7/15/2014 1:46 pm : link
eagles

Come on, not being a homer but giants ended the season strong

started off a bit slow, didnt lose anyone huge this offseason and gained a ton of talent!
0-6 is a bit slow?
Chris in Philly : 7/15/2014 1:49 pm : link
19 is about right until we see what the offense looks like and if JPP shows up to play...
I think
Metnut : 7/15/2014 1:51 pm : link
it's a fair rankings based off of where we finished last year. With the offseason moves I think we'll end up better than the 19th best team in the NFL, but the remains for us to prove.
I don't think you could rank them above the middle
Victor in CT : 7/15/2014 1:55 pm : link
of the pack. Too many unknowns.
The only one that seems weird to me is the Falcons.
Big Blue Blogger : 7/15/2014 1:56 pm : link
They sucked, and could easily suck again.

Not really buying the Bears either, but that's more of a gut feeling.
Think it's a generous spot
ghost718 : 7/15/2014 2:10 pm : link
There are teams ranked in the 20's that the Giants could easily win or lose to.

The St. Louis rams are capable of making Eli's shoulder twitch 20 times in 1 game, and they are ranked just above us.
remember
BigBlueCane : 7/15/2014 2:39 pm : link
why these lists are made. Not what's in them.
You really don't know
WillieYoung : 7/15/2014 2:48 pm : link
and neither does ESPN. I don't think I've ever seen more roster turnover (particularly among starters). I think we're a lot better than last year, with the emphasis on "think".
So smack dab in the middle of the pack
AnnapolisMike : 7/15/2014 3:01 pm : link
It's what they deserve coming off last season with lost of question marks heading into camp.

The team has a relatively soft schedule to start the season. If the season is going to be rough...we will know early.
Giants have too many question marks
Geeman : 7/15/2014 3:16 pm : link
to be ranked any higher. I have no problem with this rank.
Questionable Oline (especially LT and RG)
questionable Offensive scheme (may take awhile to click)
questionable TEs (very little experience and talent)
Questionable DEs (pass rus in particular)
NFC East is very weak compared to most divisions and the eagles right now should be the #1 to start the year.
How did the Giants
Doomster : 7/15/2014 3:32 pm : link
end the season strong? Just because of the 7-3 record? 4 game win streak against teams with no qb....2 wins against a terrible Washington team? Offense could do nothing against Detroit in second half, and only a tipped pass gave them the victory...

How did they do against the powerhouse Cowboys? SD? Moral victory because they held Seattle to 23 points?

This was 7-9 team that was closer to being a 3-4 win team....
These rankings mean nothing
GiantJohn : 7/15/2014 3:36 pm : link
What counts is who wins the last game played.
I am still not
gmen9892 : 7/15/2014 3:43 pm : link
Getting all of the Eagles love. Are we just assuming that Foles is going to put up 27td/2int seasons every year just because he did it in 13 games last year? Not to mention, he lost his best WR in DJax. Their high-profile OL Lane Johnson is starting off the year on suspension.

Their defense finished 29th last year in total yards and were worse than us in PPG allowed. They really didnt add much except their first round draft pick OLB who many thought was a reach in that spot.
The top 4 are.....
Exit 172 : 7/15/2014 3:57 pm : link
....last year's final four!

Shocker!
What were the pre season power rankings in

2007 and 2011?
I think the most interesting thing...
BillKo : 7/15/2014 4:56 pm : link
is they have us ahead of both Dallas and Washington.

You could make a case for those teams being ahead of us at this stage.

If our OL comes thru, we will be very competitive.
Sounds about right

SanFranGiantsFan : 7/15/2014 6:06 pm : link
No qualms with that ranking after last season's disaster. Prove it Giants.
Why are the Cardinals and Bengals so high?
mac attack : 7/15/2014 6:21 pm : link
I dont recall ARZ having a great offseason and the Bengals still have Dalton and lost both their coordinators.
The Falcons?
PatersonPlank : 7/15/2014 6:57 pm : link
I would swap the Giants and Falcons, then I'm ok
Falcons
AnishPatel : 7/15/2014 7:45 pm : link
and Panthers I don't agree with. Who the hell will Cameron throw to? They have no freaking Wrs. The Falcons sucked more than we did. So what now? They will be stronger? So why not us. People come back on defense, and now we have a system change which could mean a better offensive production. Don't we have a HOF coach? 19 would be fine if Panthers and Falcons weren't ranked where they are. KC I want to see with losing 3/5 OL prospects.

The rankings are garbage...
Ed A. : 7/15/2014 11:08 pm : link
No one know where any team will finish or how good or bad they will be at this point. Just another exercise in futility by the obnoxious media.
Panthers beat NYG 38-0 last season
Buck Dharma : 7/16/2014 7:57 am : link
Why would anyone have a problem with them being ranked ahead of NYG ?
Atlanta finishes 4-12
map7711 : 7/16/2014 7:59 am : link
Yet they are ranked that high? Really?

Because both teams have gone through a change or 20 since then?

But we had a winning record if you ignore the first six games.
Carolina
Buck Dharma : 7/16/2014 9:16 am : link
still has the same defensive front 7 that carried them last season. I certainly hope NYG are much better this season and Carolina is much worse, but I have no issue with the Panthers being ranked above NYG in a preseason poll.
Carolina also lost
YAJ2112 : 7/16/2014 9:25 am : link
their stud LT, top 3 WRs, a good starting G and their best CB and replaced them with a whole lot of nothing. They could definitely be a lot worse than last year's team.
Agree that they could be worse
Buck Dharma : 7/16/2014 9:36 am : link
The loss of the WRs is a bit overblown, as Ginn was the only one they wanted back and they didn't have a dynamic passing attack last season. The OTs are a big question mark.

What were the Power Rankings after Week 16 either of those seasons?
Typical BBI
GMANinDC : 7/16/2014 12:17 pm : link
"Only reason we won 6 games is because of the QB's we played"

" this team quit"

"Blow the whole thing up, just keep Eli, Cruz and JPP"

"Out schedule was weak and we played weak teams"

"we lost all our games against teams with winning records"

What!!?? we're ranked 19th!!??...That's bullshit..Typical anti-NY bias..This team is much better than 19th..The defense was top 15..The OL was bad..etc..
I checked back to 2011 and Giants...
Jimmy Googs : 7/16/2014 12:23 pm : link
were #11 prior to any preseason games.

Dropped to #15 before Week 1 based on injuries sustained in preseason.

Rose to #9 by the end of the regular season.

Oh and btw, finished up #1 about a month later...
My issue is if the preseason ranking
bignygfan : 7/16/2014 2:47 pm : link
affects which bowl game we get into.
