NFT: Anybody smoke pipes?

Moondwg : 7/17/2014 9:04 pm
I have sometimes entertained the idea of getting into it, occasionally, as some of my friends smoke cigars. That is, not as a daily habit, but occasional indulgence. Anybody got any advice for brands?
Not the kind...

My dad smoked a pipe.
Jim in LA : 7/17/2014 10:09 pm : link
I smoked cigarettes as a kid, quit started again, switched to Shermans, cigars and even a pipe through college. Quit it all (even drinking) for many years. Moved to LA in the late 80s. Worked in a smoking office where it was easier to "join them" to the tune of a 3-4 a day. Cigars occasionally. Quit again for a few years. Took up a one or two cigarette a day during the week thing for a while and that's been on and off again since.

When my dad would come out to visit, he would always have a pipe attached to his hip, couldn't be without it. He was an addictive personality and was a coin carrying member of AA for 35+ years. The pipe was something he couldn't (didn't want to?) quit.

Anyway, I took up pipe smoking along the way so I could share something with Dad whenever he came to visit. His last visit and last time I saw him was in 2009. I stopped smoking the pipe in 2011 just after he passed away. Haven't missed it since.

Mostly Smoked Captain Black in the white container. Many many people where ever I would go, off the street, at an outdoor event, would come up to me and tell me how much they loved the smell - or that it reminded them of Grandpa or their father.

It's really easy for me to quit, as my father would say jokingly, "I've done it many times" and well I have, but in my case it's for long periods of time.

Sorry for the long story...

Good luck.

I smoked a pipe on and off for 7 years...

I had a nice collection back then. Only kept about 20 pipes and sold off the rest.

I kept my best ones...Dunhill, Larsen, Radice, Stanwell, American, etc...

I'll pick it up again at some point...

It's very relaxing

Are you already smoking cigars or cigarettes?

Rick in Annapolis : 7/17/2014 9:32 pm : link : reply
Serious question......I'm curious what would compel an adult to get into something that they know is harmful if they are not already doing it. I can understand if you already smoke or have smoked some form of tobacco and are expanding on that, but if this is a new idea you might consider a different past time.

my friends smoke anymore. With so many laws around the country forbidding smoking and I guess getting older and wiser. Nobody I know smokes, in fact they talk now how they don't want to be around it. What a difference a few years makes

I had a professor that smoked a pipe in Grad school and it was the most wonderful smelling thing. I don't like the idea of doing it as a habit, and thought I'd just try it, like I said, as some friend smoke a cigar once a month or something. I don't smoke as a habit.

It was really just an idea, not a plan. That's why I threw it out here to see what would come up.

But what Bill said is also what I was wondering about. Maybe the nice smell is just for 3rd parties.

I hope my comment wasn't taken as me on a "high horse". That wasn't how it was intended. I get the draw of smoking......I did it socially for many years. But if I never smoked in my youth I'm not sure if I would randomly decide to pick up the habit in any form.

No worries at all. And really, it just popped in my head to see what BBI'ers thought of the practice. I smoked cigarettes for a couple of years in HS, and now it just seems gross.

He hasn't smoked his pipe in years

But the smell of a pipe always makes me think of my grandfather.

For a while in Iraq several of us smoked pipes instead of cigarettes because 1)you could get pipe tobacco dirt cheap at the hadji mart, far cheaper than the smokes in the PX 2)for some reason it pissed off a few of our SNCOs. I remember three of us out at the 22 antenna one chilly morning, puffing away, and our gunny came out and yelled "What is this, fucking Oxford?"

That was actually funny, you fuck. Hey, can we divert this thread to smoking dope? It'd be much more interesting?

pipe smoking so I got into it about 3 years ago. I love the taste and smell of pipes but I only smoke it a few times a month during the summer mostly. Last year, I bought a really nice Savinelli wood pipe with a burl finish from my local cigar shop. I would definitely recommend it.

while working in the yard or walking the dogs. I enjoy it. I use a corncob pipe. I like a virginia/perique blend rather than the flavored "aromatic" tobaccos. I alternate between the pipe and cigars.

I do smoke a pipe from time to time.

Don't really have a suggestion on brand but I would get a decent quality one that is not very big to start off with. It takes some time to learn and get used to.

I would recommend going to a good tobacconist and asking for some assistance as a beginner.

One thing you want to consider is what type of tobacco blend you want to smoke.
