Padres

Have one of the worst lineups I have ever seen. Now that we are in the pitchers era, bad hitting lineups really look anemic.

Queinten hitting .179 on deck you can't give him something to hit there
Mets win!

Nice win after choking up the lead...
Travis is becoming a star!

They CANNOT trade him for ANYONE.
TDA may have had his moment tonight.

He looks so much more comfortable since his call up. Fairly certain he's hitting over .300 since he was recalled with an OPS around .870 in 17 games. He looks so much more relaxed and confident in his approach. I think before he made adjustments he was trying too hard to hit for power. Looks like he's leveled out, shortened his swing a little and is just making solid contact and finding gaps.

Very encouraged by his development and it's why you have to give a guy with his hitting ability a chance to just get it going. Obviously he's got to keep it up but I think these are true glimpses of why he was a highly touted prospect.

Love Familia and Mejia as our 8th and 9th guys... those 2 should stick there for a long time if they can stay healthy. Middle relief has shaped up.. Duda had another 2 bagger, Curtis has been very solid since his brutal April.. get this team another legit power bat and I think they can do some things.
It's starting to look like Lamar Johnson

has had a very good effect on our hitters.
I said months back after they fell under .500 that they would never

see .500 again this year, i'm really hoping i'm wrong on that.

I agree with all of this. There will almost definitely be some regression with Duda, TDA, and Lagares after this hot streak ends, but there's no way you can't be excited by their development in essentially their first season's as named starters (for Duda at his natural position). Would be great to see what this squad could do if they added 1 more big bat and ideally also upgrade the defense at SS.

By the way, with the return Street got last night, Sandy has to be salivating at a potential return for Colon. Hopefully he can a couple solid upper level pieces like he did last year with Black/Herrera while trading some lower level guys to add a ML SS.
LF is such a black hole
speedywheels : 7/19/2014 10:41 am : link
Having Kirk there is better, but they really need a legit bat in that spot.

And I think it's time to put Lagares in leadoff and move Grandy down. Grandy has been good there, but he's a power bat...
I would leave Granderson alone
steve in ky : 7/19/2014 10:56 am : link
He has batted 1st for the majority of his career and clearly is more comfortable there.
i'd keep the lineup as is until this streak is over
CGiants07 : 7/19/2014 12:28 pm : link
..
If we could add a good power bat...
arcarsenal : 7/19/2014 3:15 pm : link
You could slot that guy 4th sandwiched between Wright and Duda and then actually leave Granderson leading off with Murphy in the 2 hole. Granderson has an .889 OPS as leadoff man this year as opposed to a .720 OPS as a cleanup hitter. He does have more than 2x as many games at cleanup, though.. so the numbers might move closer towards each other if all things are equal.
Kirk/Campbell platoon in LF
oipolloi : 7/19/2014 3:38 pm : link
is not going to scare anyone, but they can put ok numbers. Definitely better than Chris Young. that's for sure.
I'm probably in the minority, but
speedywheels : 7/19/2014 4:39 pm : link
I think Grandy's putting up better numbers because he's found his stroke in general, not necessarily because he's been batting leadoff.

Anyway, I think we all agree they need a power bat for LF. May have to wait until next year...

Nice article about our first round pick, who seems to have the character and personality as well as the talent to do well.

ESPN's Keith Law has Conforto ranked 32nd on his list of the top 50 prospects in baseball, calling him "the most advanced college bat in the draft class this year." He also wrote, "He's very close to major league-ready."
