used to ne one of my favorite shows. James Garner was simply a likeable guy. Been in a number of good movies too, "The Great Escape" is on my favorite list of movies as well.
If you can find it...
BMac : 7/20/2014 6:24 am : link
...check him out as the lead in "The Wheeler Dealers," a comedy about Texas oil men and promoters.
RIP to a great actor and a fine person.

During my year in Nam, I had a temporary duty assignment at a small base in Northeast Thailand that was bombing the Ho Chi Minh trail. James Garner came through leading a group of actors performing Guys and Dolls for the troops. Needles to say, he had Marlon Brando's part. It was great. We all loved the show.

Yup. Remember how disappointing it was to get an episode with Bart (Jack Kelly) rather than Brett (Garner)? I remember a fairly popular chant that went something like, "Bart's a fart, but Brett's the best!"
A underrated

and versatile actor who made it all look so easy. RIP.
Always loved The Rockford Files as a kid

The theme reminds me of Friday nights on Staten Island. I'd watch the show while my dad had his weekly card game in the kitchen.
Oh wow

I loved James Garner. I actually thought he passed away a few years ago after he suffered a stroke. RIP
Oh, crap

A chill went through me when I opened the thread :( Loved Jim Garner. Not a big Rockford fan, but I grew up with Maverick. And as has been said, when it was Bart, it was a bummer. RIP

She was my Grandma's favorite; she passed on earlier this summer. I remember him affectionately from the Great Escape and the Rockford Files.

So many great roles over the years

But not even James Garner could get me to watch The Notebook.

I sat through about 30 minutes of it with my wife, and I was happy to see him, and old friend, amidst the wreckage.

Here's a cool line:
Quote:
“I’m playing me,” Garner said about the role. “Bret Maverick is lazy: I’m lazy. And I like being lazy.”

as long as he's with me. And he's going with me.

RIP to one of the coolest guys in Hollywood. He was great.
I thought if I could be anyone in Hollywood

I'd want to be James Garner. RIP Victor/Victoria might be THE most underrated comedy in the history of filmdom. RIP JG
It's interesting to think of how many times

Rockford got himself out of trouble with his wits and quick mouth as opposed to his gun.
I met him in 1979.

I was working the 16th green during the Pebble Beach golf tourney (then hosted by Bing Crosby). I met many celebrities that week and many or most were thin and frail looking. Not Garner. He was large and broad and strong and far more handsome in person than on film. I was more impressed with him and his physical stature than anyone else I met that week. It has stuck with me all these years.

Tommy, I met him on the sidelines of a football game in the 80's. He had a remarkable presence about him but came across as a regular kinda guy. Talked football and food for about half an hour and it was awesome!

Pretty sure my affinity for plaid jackets is a direct result of my affinity for The Rockford Files. (Probably why I smoked too). Garner was a man's man. Tough loss.
RIP Rockfish

Loved the Rockford Files, probably the first show (reruns) we recorded on videotape back in the 80s. Especially the shows with Isaac Hayes.

Also, loved him in Great Escape, Barbarians at the Gate and Murphy's Romance.
Okie,

Then tou know exactly what I mean about him. He seemed like a real guy not some trumped up hollywood deal. RIP

Yeah. Kind of like getting a Shemp instead of a Curly.
