RUMOR: Chris Snee will retire tomorrow

Wouldn't be surprising & hopefully people will remember him for the player he once was, not the player he currently is. He was a great, great Giant. But nobody can avoid Father Time.

there have been more than a few rumbles that this was going to eventually end up this way, particularly if he won't be able to pass a physical before camp starts.

he was such a beast for us in his prime. He was such an important draft pick for this franchise because of everything we gave up in the Eli trade. With that 2nd round pick we got an elite OG and a player who was apart of 2 Championships. His play had clearly taken a couple of steps back in recent years and you knew it was unlikely he'd ever bounce back. Sucks but I wish the man well in his post-football life.

Would have loved to see him come back to 75% the player he was. I figured he would be an average starter this year or a good backup.

He had a great career though. I loved the pick when it first happened and he exceeded my expectations. He was such an animal for years. If this is true then Thank You Chris for leaving everything on the field for us! Us fans really appreciate it and you will be missed!

that Jerry was signed to start. In light of that, this is not a surprise. Thanks to Snee for a great career and 2 rings, all the best to him.

Thank you Chris! 2 SB wins. And retiring now is the best chance for others to get reps. This makes a lot of sense, I have felt this was the most likely outcome all along

but this is the right thing to do for himself and the team. I don't want to go into the season knowing he could break down at any moment. I bet it is true.

As we saw with Diehl. Coughlin was very loyal to him and it really hurt our team. The same could have definitely happened with Snee. John Jerry right now is way better then Snee. He is the guy who I wanted to start as soon as we signed him. Jerry just has to be motivated and the guy could be very very good. I think Coughlin can be the coach to help him with that. If you read anything about the Fins over the last 5 years everybody says it was an extremely laid back atmosphere. That isn't good for a guy with motivational issues.

Ideally Weston Richburg practices well and plays good in the preseason and he ends up starting at G. Also Schwartz said he is better at RG then LG. If Snee is gone we can maybe move Schwartz to RG and Richburg plays at LG.

He has my respect but now it's time for Mosley to be given a chance.

You were a great Giant and will be missed.

If Mosely has developed I think he could be a decent option. I hope Richburg is so good that he earns a spot though being a 2nd rd pick (much like Snee was)

Saw @BigBlueInteract rumor Giants G Chris Snee to retire. Not yet. He meets w/ team brass tomorrow to discuss whether his body can make it.

As far as the team is concerned. All it means is that he cannot add any more value than the 53rd man to make this team. He is counting against the cap either way. No savings on cap. I'd rather he made the team as a reserve coming off the bench.

Instead of a $6.6MM cap number for playing, he would probably have a dead-money figure around $5.5-5.6MM. Hard to be sure about the exact amounts without knowing the details of his 2014 guarantee.

If the competition is simply to replace Snee at RG, Jerry's size and experience would seem to give him a big edge. The twist is that RG is also Schwartz's natural position. Moving him there would shift the competition to LG, where Mosley or Richburg would seem to have a much better shot. As far as I know, Jerry never played left guard in Miami, where Richie Incognito was a fixture at LG until the hazing scandal cost him his job. (After Incognito was suspended, Nate Garner and Sam Brenner filled in, with Jerry remaining at RG.)

Other than it being a big deal if you are thinking about the fan-based sentimental side of it.

Snee was/is no longer an elite guard and I'm not sure I would say he would even be in the top 50% in the league anymore. NYG won't miss much if he does indeed retire.

The biggest blow is that it takes a bite out of the depth chart...a part of the depth chart that is among the weakest on the roster.

John Jerry appears to be the starter at RG, which you have to be OK with but no completely sold on. Talent wise he has the goods. He can move/bend well and there is more than enough size/power to his game. Can he make faster decisions and will he adjust to whats thrown at him from the defense better than what he did in Miami? Those are the questions. I'd rather it be that than the other way around. Behind him is where I get concerned.

Brandon Mosley is the guy I want to trust the most with snaps. He has power to his game and the struggles he has shown have been more injury and experience-based more than anything. I think he has the physical ability to play the position at a high enough level, but still not top half of the league type quality.

Eric Herman was one of my favorite 2013 draft selections and after his practice squad year, I'll be curious to see if he is ready to play against NFl speed. He has the power and mentality.

I have not given up on James Brewer but I have never liked his game and I don't see much changing between last year and this season. Simply put he gets pushed around when he can't anticipate the action. He will rarely push guys back and he doesn't stick to his pass blocking assignments. I would actually be more confident in JD Walton or Weston Richburg playing his spot (whichever doesn't play C).

There isn't much available on the market now but that can change pretty fast. There are a lot of new bodies on this OL and the overall cohesion/chemistry won't be high no matter what....thus bringing in a new body once the cuts begin wouldn't be a big deal at all. There are a couple young guys around the league that I really liked int he draft grading process that could become available....I'll keep an eye out.

For all the well-discussed draft misses, we absolutely nailed the Snee pick...a bedrock of 2 epic Super Bowl champions

Herman spent his redshirt season on the practice squad, unlike Mosley(IR) or Brewer (inactive). So he didn't earn a credited year of service. That means the Giants control his rights through 2017.

Although Herman faces a tough climb up the depth chart, he does have the advantage of being a born-and-bred OG. I think all the other candidates to replace Chris Snee were tackles or centers in college. That might mean his experience deficit is smaller than one might expect for a MAC lineman who hasn't taken an NFL snap. Not saying he has a realistic chance to start in 2014 - just that it would be great for the team if he can push short-timers like Jerry and Brewer.

Hoping he makes the right call here and hangs them up. I really don't think it's worth it for him to attempt to continue playing.

Also: I believe when a player retires, salary wise, it's like being released. Snee had a cap hit of $6,643,750 and dead money (if cut) of $5,550,000 according to Spotrac.com
That should result in the Giants having about $1,093,750 in cap savings as BBB said.

Herman had offseason hip surgery IIRC. Not sure how that affects his future, but Snee retiring increases his chance of making the 53.

Back onto the topic, I do wonder as one of the beat writers noted (I believe it was Jordan Raanan, could have been another) earlier this week that the contract Snee signed was extremely out of the ordinary; I wonder if they're any special provisions that kick into place for this exact scenario (whether its to the Giants benefit or Snee's).

Per the New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano, Snee's surgically repaired elbow is "not good" after it forced him to be shut down during OTAs. Vacchiano also confirms "retirement is an option" for 32-year-old Snee, who's additionally undergone hip surgeries in back-to-back offseasons. A rumor appearing on the Giants fan site "Big Blue Interactive" claimed Sunday that Snee will "announce his retirement before training camp begins." The rumor hasn't been confirmed, but it certainly appears to be a realistic possibility. The Giants would likely turn to converted OT Brandon Mosley as Snee's replacement. Snee is a four-time Pro Bowler and Giants head coach Tom Coughlin's son-in-law.

If Snee fails his pre-training camp physical and retires, he will be entitled to $1.1M in injury protection benefit according to Article 45 of the CBA (because it was the result of an injury from last season). I wonder if this is where things are heading and the Giants (including management, coaches, and Snee) are just going through the motions in order to be in compliance with the legalize....

mosley played well in limited time he played last year before breaking his hand. I would say straight 50-50 on who starts between him and jerry

Initial reports indicated Snee would meet with team brass to discuss retirement, but Graziano reports Snee "has indeed decided to retire" at age 32. The four-time Pro Bowler's loss is a big one for Big Blue, as Brandon Mosley (59 career snaps) is now ticketed for right guard duties, with Will Beatty, Geoff Schwartz, J.D. Walton, and Justin Pugh at the other four spots. O-Line injuries torpedoed the Giants' running game last season. While we're trying to stay optimistic that won't happen again this year, things have certainly not gotten off on the right foot.

And think he's a natural right guard, but as stead he's coming off hip surgery. We saw what that did to Snee (a more experienced and fully developed player). I don't think Herman can help this year (hope I'm wrong).

The guy that nobody's talking about is Reynolds. Except for the unfortunate missed block that caused Eli's injury, he actually played pretty well, last year. Something tells me he's the positive "X" factor in these hard times.

they have gotten it. 3/5 of the line will be new, and its the middle three. This was arguably the biggest problem, with a lot of pressure being generated right into Eli's face.

He got the "scoop " that he I is retiring (which he actually didn't because the op had it yesterday). Anyway, no reporter wants to be the guy breaking a story on a non impactful player retiring. Snee was a great Giant, but unfortunately injuries limited his career and his impact since 2012. I will always appreciate him.

If there were people expecting him to play well and contribute this season, that's fine..but to me it was always a wing and a prayer. I honestly do not think the Giants were in that group. It was always up in the air that he'd be able to come back, and even if he did, to be an improved player.

I had always thought he initially was coming back for the wrong reason of not wanting to go out hurt last year. When you are as beat up as he is with all the recent surgeries, at his age, trying to play 1 more year while still being beat up helps no one.

He was a great player - and it is unfortunate because G can play well into their 30's. his body gave out
