but to answer your question, I'll take a 5th safety over a 3rd QB or 4th TE, especially since they are likely to carry a FB and both FBs on the roster (Conner/Hyno) are big, lumbering guys.
The 5th safety (whether it's Taylor or someone else), is likely to be a strong special teams player and thus provides more versatility. i.e. if another ST cover guy gets injured, be it a S, CB, WR, etc, Taylor would be able to fill that role.
preseason performance, preseason injuries, McAdoo's innovations etc. As pointed out by Colin in the Jernigan thread, perhaps our new OC stresses two slot receiver formations more, which will demand less depth at TE.
Carrying three last year was an unfortunate necessity. If Nassib still can't displace Curtis Painter, he belongs on the practice squad (for which I think he remains eligible, because he did not play last year). If another team signs him, no great loss. I'm pretty sure he'll be #2, so the question is likely moot.
As for fifth safety vs. fourth TE, I'll take the safety - especially a big dude like Taylor who might reduce the need for a sixth LB.
If Charles makes the team, I would say Taylor because our safety depth is a little worrisome.

Grimble I think can likely be stashed on the PS.

Should have just accepted the fact that if Eli goes down, even this year, this team goes nowhere...

That confuses me. I'd think Freeman would give them a puncher's chance.
