Phil Simms said in a radio interview I heard that he had a gay teammate, they all knew, it wasn't a big deal. I'm sure he wasn't the first or the last. So it's not like "Well, if this ever comes up, they'll deal with it then." If they hired an outspoken anti-Semite, that'd be weird for Geoff Schwartz. If they hired an outspoken racist, that'd be weird for, well, probably everybody. So they hired an outspoken homophobe. It's probably gonna be weird.
Maybe he'll learn to be more open minded, I dunno.
it's a name. No idea if it is a good or bad hire. I mean, it's not like Tyree developed all that much as a pro, so I'm not entirely convinced he knows what to do here. He came in as a ST demon and #4/5 WR and left that way. Maybe I dont understand the job though.
Yip, because he is a solid man who takes care of his responsibilities. He has some views most of us dont agree with(myself included)but last time I checked it was okay to have different opinions.
When the opinion is that two people of the same sex
his first attempt at proselytizing -- homophobic or whatever, he will be out.
How long ago were his comments?
I was initially surprised but it looks like he was being groomed for this job. I was impressed when he was on Ellen Degeneris (which doesn't fit the MO).
A silver lining is that Way helped out with the RBs, so he will probably help with STs, which should please all the Quinn 'fans'.
RE: Has it gotten that bad that if you believe in traditional
the knock on Tyree's personal views interfering with his job as Dir. of Player Development.
IF the p/r-sensitive Giants thought it was an issue, they would not have made the move. And if DT thought his opinions would interfere with his ability to do the job, I believe his character would not have had him even apply for the job.
Also, if they wanted to give him a thank-you-for-The Catch-job, they would have created something else.
it's when he brings them to the job, it could be an issue -- not just from a PR point of view but in terms of performance. The role is a key one in player communication so the person needs to be approachable and safe.
RE: When the opinion is that two people of the same sex
have to do with player development. Sportswriters would do well to acknowledge that the players they cover, and many of the fans they're writing for, in many cases do not uniformly share their points of view, and in many instances their views are about as nuanced as a cardboard box. His views are not mine but this is one area on which the views of a large swath of the population are in flux and it would be nice if we could prod change instead of instantly dubbing someone an irredeemable bigot and deciding he ought never work again.
of Tyree's role is working with players with off the field issues. You can imagine that some might not be happy with the message the Giants are sending by putting a presumed homophone in such a position to be mentoring younger players.
Like other posters have said, I think the Giants likely spoke to Tyree about this, and I doubt it'll have any affect on his new role with the team. It's still a (small) PR hit though.
how foolish, shouldn't prevent him from making a living.
It's an absolute fair question as to whether his beliefs make him a good candidate for this specific position that he's been hired for though.
What happens if there's a gay player that's having off the field issues that would normally fall under Tyree's watch, require his [attempted] counsel? Is that player going to feel comfortable trusting a man who openly thinks his identity could cause the entire country to fall into irreparable disarray?
Tyree's (and Charles Way's) views are not their own
they are God's view. It is what is written in the Bible. Tyree has decided to make a commitment to following God's not man's ideas of what is wrong or right.
Giants also seem to think he is a good role model for players hence the position he has been given.
Charles did an amazing job helping players find meaning and purpose and Tyree will likely do the same.
*prevent him from making a living doing something, somewhere.

Bullshit. Tyree said something not taught in any church short of the Westboro lunatics who don't have a real church. Bringing homophobia to that level should not be taken lightly.

The NFL shouldn't be having games, players shouldn't be working, on Sundays according to the bible's take on the Sabbath too.
Why are you a fan of such a heathen sport, Joe?

From the Daily news:
In his role, Tyree will provide guidance to younger players, and "aid them in continuing education, their development as young men," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said.
The pick of Tyree to fill the position held by Charles Way - who left the Giants to head the NFL's Player Engagement Department - raised eyebrows considering Tyree once said he would trade his Super Bowl championship in order to stop gay marriage.
"Honestly, I probably would," Tyree said in 2011. "Nothing means more to me than that my God would be honored. Being the fact that I firmly believe that God created and ordained marriage between a man and a woman, I believe that that's something that should be fought for at all costs.
"So I'll lay down everything I am to preserve the honor and integrity of the God that I serve."
which is of course true, but not because two dudes want to marry.
Funny that nothing will actually change for straight people--well, so little it won't be noticeable.
With the divorce rate somewhere in the 99.4% range, the idea that the union two people who actually want to be married (and, presumably, stay married) are going to destroy the institution makes me chuckle.

One of my buddies who is gay (who is now making news because his partner who died a few years back--his company (big pharma--tons of dough) didn't offer benefits to gay partners) well, they were together for 20 years and that doesn't seem to be the exception with the folks I know. BTW, the friend who died was a big Giants fan too.
I'm not sure there is anything particularly different, I'd just suppose (maybe incorrectly) that you eliminate the bulk of those who marry because of oops or because it's what they think they're supposed to do at a given point in their lives. Conversely you may have less (read: kids or, cynically, the fear of child support) bonding them together when the going gets tough. Either way it certainly will not doom marriage.

character is horrible. Preaching and proselytizing on every thread. I don't post much at all but enough is enough already, he is clearly ruining multiple threads. There is no need for any of that.
It was only gonna be a matter of time before he couldn't help
Maybe he'll learn to be more open minded, I dunno.

They are all for free everything unless you disagree with their agenda. Then you had better shut up or they will go after you and your job.
