Geoff Schwartz

robbieballs2003 : 7/22/2014 11:50 am
With Snee retiring we have an open spot at RG. It was reported that RG is Schwartz's best position. When we signed Schwartz he said they signed him as a LG. Does that change now? Has there been any information about this at all or is it a wait an see approach? Thanks in advance.
Interesting question
Jay in Toronto : 7/22/2014 11:52 am : link
I guess a collateral one would be if Jerry, Mosely, Richburg are better at LG than RG?
If it is his best position and he feels the most comfortable there
robbieballs2003 : 7/22/2014 11:56 am : link
you think he would play there. However, with Beatty a question mark and Pugh the vet on the OL I can see why they would want a solid vet on each side of the line. I am really curious to see if Schwartz is switching sides in camp.
LG

he will play LG
Nothing's etched yet

How about another question?
robbieballs2003 : 7/22/2014 12:02 pm : link
Would you rather have a balanced OL on each side or a dominate right or left side? Having Schwartz and Pugh together could be a great run blocking tandem.

noted Schwartz may be moved to RG. I think we just need to let this play out. I think the whole interior OL (assumimg Beatty returns to good form) may be in a bit of flux.
I never understood why the Giants pegged him as a LG from the get-go.
Klaatu : 7/22/2014 12:07 pm : link
This is a guy who's played on the right side - Guard and Tackle - for his entire college and pro career.

I totally agree but I think it had to do with Snee.
Personally,
Big Blue '56 : 7/22/2014 12:22 pm : link
I'd prefer Schwartz at OLG to cover Beatty's ass if necessary. Richburg and Beatty could be problematical on the left side imo..Pugh and Richburg on the right side would add less pressure on Richburg, imv..This may be the Giants line of thinking-atbleast up to this point anyway..
I agree with moving him to RG
andrew_nyg : 7/22/2014 12:22 pm : link
given that it's his natural position and that he and Pugh could make a helluva tandem...but DAMN that left side looks like it's going to SUCK! (Beatty and Mosely?! Ugh!)

I hope like hell that the Center position is solved, otherwise they are worse off than they were last year.

Good question.
kmed : 7/22/2014 12:23 pm : link
I'd rather have players in positions were they play their best. So if he's better at RG, I'd prefer him at RG regardless of who is at other positions.
I think he should play at his best position.

I know I saw it on BBI
Semipro Lineman : 7/22/2014 12:25 pm : link
But where was it reporting that Schwartz best position was right guard or that he had only played right guard as others on here have stated.

I know his breakout season may have been at right guard but that doesn't mean he hasn't played left guard or won't excell there.
You're probably right, robbie.
Klaatu : 7/22/2014 12:26 pm : link
That's why I was hoping that Snee would retire, and now that he has, I'd like to see the Giants plug Schwartz in at RG. That's where he's played, and that's where he's excelled.

As for LG, Big Blue Blogger made a case that Mosley would be better suited there than at RG. Maybe he can restate it in this thread.
I had the same question the other day Robbie
Jimmy Googs : 7/22/2014 12:33 pm : link
I really think they named Schwartz at LG because of Snee. With his rehab still in question, the front office probably wanted to give Snee every opportunity to make it back before putting Schwartz in his spot.

I would think the prudent thing to do now would be to move Schwartz to RG where he has played consistently. Covering up deficiencies on the left side shouldn't trump putting players where they play their best.

Schwartz's Wikipedia page is linked below. Unless I missed it, it shows that he's played on the right side exclusively in college and in the pros.

Now, you could be right and Schwartz may excel at LG, too, but it just seems to me like a "square peg, round hole" thing.

I'm very interested in hearing what attributes that we are sure Mosley has that are better suited for the left side.

Keeping in mind that if you're mentioning more mobility, then why won't that be an asset on the right side?
If he never played LG,
Marty in Albany : 7/22/2014 12:37 pm : link
1. It is possible that he could into an even better LG than he was at RG. Or at least as good. It's possible.

2. The Giants know how well he played at RG. If he can't handle LG, hopefully the Giants' coaches are as smart as BBI and will move him over to RG before the end of camp.

3. Even if he eventually goes over to RG, playing LG will make him more versatile and more valuable.

I'm guessing that his knowledge and experience with the Left Defensive Tackles and Ends in the League and his lack of familiarity with the Right Defensive Tackles and Ends will be Schwartz's biggest hurdle rather than the physical part of it.
I don't know which position is best for him
Some Fan : 7/22/2014 12:38 pm : link
but do think it is better to play him where he is best, rather than protecting someone mediocre.
Question: For those more know
ECham : 7/22/2014 12:38 pm : link
more about the OL.

How different is the footwork between right and left?
would it be a big deal to switch sides in the middle of camp?
E cham
Semipro Lineman : 7/22/2014 12:47 pm : link
People have switched from one side to the other mid week so it shouldn't be a major problem in the middle of training camp.

IMO the main difference between the two guard spots depends more on the initial step you take. So there's an adjustment. Some guys make it easier than others.

Schwartz should be the RG
Optimus-NY : 7/22/2014 12:48 pm : link
Let Mosley battle it out at LG with the others.

One thing you aren't considering with these 2 points is communication. The "sum is greater than the parts" applies to the OL perhaps more than any other football unit. So having Schwartz practice exclusively, or mostly, at LG for camp/preseason could hurt the overall potential of the OL if they then move him to RG and he has poor communication with Pugh.

I actually think part of Beatty's awful play in 2013 was due to poor communication due to the changing LG position and not always being on the same page as far as picking up blitzers, switching on stunts, etc.

I have no clue how the Giants blocking schemes will change, but under TC/Gilbride, it seems as if they preferred a more mobile LG for pulling and the more powerful Snee on strong side. This was especially the case with Seubert at LG and McKenzie at RT.

You must be going through Training Camp Withdrawal. I'm going to miss your reports.
The longer Jerry is limited, the more likely they are to move Schwartz
Big Blue Blogger : 7/22/2014 1:48 pm : link
Jerry is the one serious contender that you might consider a pure RG. If Flaherty thinks Schwartz and Jerry are his two best guards, it probably makes sense to play Schwartz on the right. If it's an open competition, or if Jerry is slow to get into playing shape, Mosley or Richburg might fit better on the left, where their mobility would give them an edge over hulks like Schwartz and Jerry.

The prototypes for LG and RG are hardly etched in stone, though. McAdoo has first-hand experience with fluid roles: the Packers swapped their guards last year. As others have noted with respect to Schwartz (and Beatty), a key consideration in deciding where to put Sitton and Lang was the help needed by Green Bay's tackles.
Sorry, that should read...

..." it probably makes sense to play Schwartz on the left"
Have to keep the left side of the line stronger than the right...
The Tempest : 7/22/2014 7:20 pm : link
Especially when you are thinking of pass protection. Geoff Schwartz can play both guard positions very well without a doubt but lets consider the left side of the line for a minute. Either Charles Brown or Will Beatty is playing LT and whoever ends up starting there is going to need a lot more help than Justin Pugh over at RT. I'd rather have the better offensive guard on the team lining up on the left side. We will see who lands where on the line in September.
Mosley played left tackle at Auburn
Milton : 7/22/2014 7:29 pm : link
...and I'm pretty sure he played some left guard, too. He's athletic (a former defensive end) and has relatively long arms (34 inches), so he is well-suited for the left side of the line.
He will be LG.
section125 : 7/22/2014 7:31 pm : link
Pat Flaherty will figure it out, but I doubt they move Schwartz now.

I had the same question, and was going to start a thread until I saw this one.

And I totally agree with the analysis above by Jimmy Googs.
