NFT: U.S. airlines suspend Israel flights

Jints in Carolina : 7/22/2014 12:21 pm
CNN) -- Several U.S. airlines suspended flights to Israel on Tuesday because of security concerns, with one company specifically citing a rocket attack near Tel Aviv.
Delta Air Lines and American Airlines both told CNN they suspended service to Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv. US Airways made the same decision, the Israel Airport Authority told CNN.

Citing "reports of a rocket or associated debris" near the airport, Delta said it suspended service between its hub in New York and Tel Aviv "to ensure the safety and security of our customers and employees."

Israel has said militants from Gaza have been launching rockets into the country for days, part of an ongoing military conflict between Israel and the Palestinian territory.

One immediate effect: Delta Flight 468, which left New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport with 273 passengers, diverted Tuesday to Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport instead of heading to Tel Aviv as scheduled, the airline said.

"Delta continues to work closely with U.S. and other government resources to monitor the situation," the airline said.

If only Israel would stop their operation

Hamas would stop flinging rockets at TLV /sarcasm off.

Btw here is the Security Council debate going on now. USA speaking now. You already missed the clowns from Jordan and Luxembourg.

figured out how close some Hamas missiles got to Ben Gurion airport. We don't live too far from BG, about 15-20 minutes drive, and we've heard plenty of explosions from that general area.

My wife said that the IDF wouldn't announce these strikes close to BG to avoid folks panicking. Maybe EL-AL gets a heads up! about it.

I didn't see how, in good conscience, the Israeli Aeronautics community could keep that quiet.
It looks like other than Delta and American

are allowing passengers to change tickets without a fee (including el al).

I suspect it's the act of war insurance carriers

who have shut down the flights to Ben Gurion. NYTimes had a piece this morning outlining how screwed they are because of the two Malaysian Airlines crashes. Estimated claims for the last 5 months are 9x aggregate annual premiums.

sucks for the people of palestine. Hamas is the only one

trying to pick a fight with Israel for their own beliefs. Palestinian people have no choice but to let them fight for Gaza.

there is no right person in this. There just needs to be peace there. Thats it.. if it was that simple though. :(

BREAKING: FAA orders US airlines not to fly to or from Israel's Ben Gurion Airport "for a period of up to 24 hours" -
Boy, just think of the repurcussions against Israel
Rob in NYC : 7/22/2014 12:53 pm : link
if the unthinkable happened and a passenger jet was destroyed by a missile on the runway.
Repercussions against Israel?
JayBinQueens : 7/22/2014 1:00 pm : link
If a plane got hit on the runway it wouldn't be from an Israeli missile...
Here is the Notam

At 12:15 EST on July 22, 2014, the FAA issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) informing U.S. airlines that they are prohibited from flying to or from Israel's Ben Gurion International Airport for a period of up to 24 hours. The notice was issued in response to a rocket strike which landed approximately one mile from Ben Gurion International Airport on the morning of July 22, 2014. The NOTAM applies only to U.S. operators, and has no authority over foreign airlines operating to or from the airport.

Was being sarcastic, of course, but I would only be mildly surprised if it resulted in some sort of condemnation from the UN.

A lot of them voted for Hamas leaders. I feel bad for those just trying to go about their business and trying to raise their children but they chose to bring in a group that has as part of it's charter, the death of Jews and the destruction of Israel. It's usually the average Joe that bears the brunt of these extremist actions.
Just now the warning sirens in my town went off.
BlueLou : 7/22/2014 2:10 pm : link
After about a minute after the sirens stopped, we heard two explosions in the distance, maybe intercepted, maybe landed 10-20 km away from us.

As I understand, central Israel has had lots of sirens today.

Today, in the course of the regular inspection of its premises, UNRWA discovered rockets hidden in a vacant school in the Gaza Strip. As soon as the rockets were discovered, UNRWA staff were withdrawn from the premises, and so we are unable to confirm the precise number of rockets.

That's from TODAY July 22 2014. Gotta hand it to the UN, that's twice in one week. These guys are committed to armed resistance. Who's next, ISIS in Iraq?

Israel planted it.
MY brother and his family were due to fly back tonight
Giants11 : 7/22/2014 6:09 pm : link
basically every carrier has cancelled their flights there except the Israeli ones El Al, Israir etc...They were supposed to fly Turkish airlines and connect through Turkey. That's not happening. They have to go to JFK and try to get on some flight, but I bet they will be heading back here tonight.
Giants11 - my wife and her sister were due back from Amsterdam the
BlueLou : 7/22/2014 6:45 pm : link
morning of the 23rd via Austrian Air and they got cancelled/delayed for it seems at least 12 hours.

EL AL is all systems go. Those guys are of course all ex-IAF pilots,so they're a little nuts.

Big Al LOL, yeah we planted them and are firing them at our lone international airport, too!
yep BlueLou I know it well
Giants11 : 7/22/2014 6:48 pm : link
the Israeli mentality- "tell us we can't land at our airport? F-You!" God Bless them. Stay safe brother and good luck with the wine!!
basically once the big carriers started cancelling
Giants11 : 7/22/2014 6:52 pm : link
it was a domino effect across the board. I'm sure the insurance companies are demanding they don't land there. They are basically saying if heaven forbid something happens to a plane you are not covered and you will be out of business. Most companies are probably assessing that it's nowhere near worth the risk.
