NFT: Yankees close to acquiring Chase Headley

Pego61 : 7/22/2014 1:11 pm
Shouldn't cost too much. Has struggled with a back injury this year, but has hit well in July. Free agent after the season. Better 3B option than we've had this year, for sure.
Link - ( New Window )
And reports say
Pego61 : 7/22/2014 1:12 pm : link
the trade is Yangervis Solarte and Rafael DePaula.

Not terrible.
DePaula and Solarte go to Padres for Headley
GiantJake : 7/22/2014 1:12 pm : link
Wow. I didn't see that one coming.
as I said in the other thread about Danks
Greg from LI : 7/22/2014 1:12 pm : link
The price had better be pretty damned low.
hopefully headley
sinctybldh : 7/22/2014 1:13 pm : link
can do much better then what he has done for the padres this year.
Solarte/DePaula? Lol Greg
Giants11 : 7/22/2014 1:18 pm : link
you got your wish no? low enough?
I wouldn't have given up RDP for Chase Headley
Greg from LI : 7/22/2014 1:18 pm : link
It's not awful, but that guy's value couldn't be much lower than it should be right now. Slightly above average glove, offense has declined significantly the past two seasons, past 30, headed into free agency.

Headley's wOBA is lower than Brian Roberts'.
Nice fringe move.
kmed : 7/22/2014 1:18 pm : link
Can only help I guess.
I'd say "can't hurt" is more accurate than "can only help"
Greg from LI : 7/22/2014 1:19 pm : link
We have little to lose, although I doubt Headley does much of anything to improve the lineup.
Headley
Sammo284 : 7/22/2014 1:20 pm : link
Was a hot commodity a few years back and Yankees have always liked him.
Fine,
kmed : 7/22/2014 1:30 pm : link
can't hurt I guess and hopefully it helps.
i think if he hits
sinctybldh : 7/22/2014 1:32 pm : link
yankees will resign him.
That's not a terrible deal...
Dunedin81 : 7/22/2014 1:33 pm : link
I like RDP and he has potential but he's not a worldbeater, and even if Headley doesn't rebound offensively he's still a better defensive 3B than anything we have trotted out there of late. Send down Zelous, bring up Pirela or Refsnyder to play 2B.
I liked Solarte
CruzShip52 : 7/22/2014 1:34 pm : link
O well
They got Headley
Bake54 : 7/22/2014 1:34 pm : link
for a bag of donuts. Guy is hitting .323 for the month of July. Cashman trying to catch lightning in a bottle again.
Headley pretty much IS a bag of donuts at this point
Greg from LI : 7/22/2014 1:35 pm : link
Again....Brian Roberts is outhitting Chase Headley this season.
Headley is a top 5 defender at the position...
Dunedin81 : 7/22/2014 1:36 pm : link
and our infield defense has been excrement this season. It sounds small but if we're going to rely on a patchwork rotation that could be a major factor.
Done deal
superspynyg : 7/22/2014 1:38 pm : link
the trade goes through. Welcome to NY Chase..Now hit the damn ball.
Good move
HomerJones45 : 7/22/2014 1:39 pm : link
I can't stand Cashman, but got to give him his due here.

Headley is a legit MLB player at a position of scarcity that cost nothing. Solarte is a career minor leaguer and De Paula is a 23 year old (maybe) pitcher who is still in A ball. And he just turned 30.

Headley needed to get out of San Diego where he had no one in back of him and got nothing to hit- and when he did, he needed to it 10 miles to hit it out.

They need more power from a corner OF spot.
It's a start
illmatic : 7/22/2014 1:42 pm : link
The lineup needs more help than that though. But there's no easy way to fix it.
Headley
Jim in Tampa : 7/22/2014 1:43 pm : link
He's only really had one good year.

As long as they didn't give up too much for him then I guess there's no harm.

No go get somebody to replace Ichiro.
Not a bad deal
dpinzow : 7/22/2014 1:43 pm : link
Yangervis was a nice story but a AAAA player, and we upgraded. It's not going to move us closer to legitimate WS contention but Headley is better than what we had there
I'm not a big fan of the move
rich in DC : 7/22/2014 1:44 pm : link
No problem with dealing Solarte- his upside is utility guy- and the Yanks have other options.

DePaula, on the other hand, is too high a cost. His upside is considerable, even if he is still learning how to pitch.

IMO, the Yanks simply do not have enough to contend this year, and adding Headley while trading a real prospect is just a waste of resources. The only possible justification would be the 40 man crunch this coming winter- they might not be able to protect all their prospects- and assuming DePaula had to be added and they did not think they could do it, then I guess it would work.

Still, Headley is NOT guaranteed to be a plus- I believe it has been reported that he has a herniated disk in his back. Because he was acquired in his walk year, the Yanks are also prohibited from making a tender offer to him this winter- so they must sign him or lose him for nothing.

If Headley becomes a rental player, this becomes an even worse deal.
Please rid of Ichiro and Roberts
CruzShip52 : 7/22/2014 1:44 pm : link
Id love to see them trade for a bat and bring up Refsnyder
Headley's 2012 is in the MVP conversation...
Dunedin81 : 7/22/2014 1:47 pm : link
his 2010, 2011 and 2013 are still better than anything we were going to get out of that position this year. We don't need 2012 Headley for this trade to be a win.
I don't think I want the Yankees to get Danks
sinctybldh : 7/22/2014 1:47 pm : link
I don't want someone who is on the downside on a multi year contract.
Danks would cost fodder...
Dunedin81 : 7/22/2014 1:51 pm : link
he's barely an MLB pitcher at this point. But I'd rather they go find a stopgap instead of paying out the --- for Cliff Lee.
Good move by Cashman
Bake54 : 7/22/2014 1:52 pm : link
IMO. Cheap rental and a bridge to Arod.

By the way, One of the Phillies' sportswriters (Bob Brookover) suggested the price tag for Cliff Lee should be Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge but after last night's performance, that probably won't happen.
Solarte has a higher OPS than Headley

BeerFridge : 7/22/2014 1:58 pm : link
on Lee's no trade list so he'd probably want an extension to waive that. NO FUCKING WAY.
here is what bowden said the yankees should give for headley
sinctybldh : 7/22/2014 1:59 pm : link
A package of struggling prospects in OF Mason Williams and 3B Dante Bichette Jr. could end up being a long-term steal for the Padres, when and if either (or both) start to put it together. Another possibility would be a package of 19-year-olds, including shortstop Abiatal Avelino and third baseman Miguel Andujar, both of whom have high upside but are a long ways away from the big leagues.
Real
DanMetroMan : 7/22/2014 1:59 pm : link
solid move. Headley has back problems (and 2012 looks like a fluke 2nd half but he still sports a career 113 OPS+
So everyone knows
Bake54 : 7/22/2014 1:59 pm : link
Lee is owed $25 million in 2014 and 2015. The club has an option for $27.5 million with a $12.5 million buyout in 2016.

He is expensive even without the prospects.
sin
Bake54 : 7/22/2014 2:00 pm : link
That was a bit tongue in cheek.
There's no way I would trade Judge
GiantJake : 7/22/2014 2:01 pm : link
The guy has too much size and athleticism. Let him develop.
Buster Olney
sinctybldh : 7/22/2014 2:02 pm : link
suggested that it would take a middling prospect for Lee and that is only if the Phillies paid for part of the remaining money on his contract.

And that's still their biggest problem, by far.
I
DanMetroMan : 7/22/2014 2:14 pm : link
find that Olney report hard to believe. Lee is owed 25 million next year, 12.5 (or 25) in 2016 if he throws enough innings. That's significant money no doubt but it's still only at worst 2 seasons and he still only has a 2.87 FIP this season. He's still a 1-2 starter for 99.9% teams in baseball. If the Phillies ate money I suspect they would get significant talent as part of the deal.

Will probably add Willingham, that is what I am hearing, and with Headly and Willingham, that is plenty of help for the offense, this teams problem is pitching talent. The offense has struggled, you will get any argument from me on that topic, and I agree it is the biggest disappointment, but the 3 things that need to happen to turn this offense around is for Tex to remain healthy and hit like he has been, for Beltran to hit like we all had hoped he would hit, and for Brian McCann to hit like he can hit.

Beltran just needs to be the full time DH, and to hit like we all know he can from the DH position, full time. McCann needs to hit like we all know he can, there are a couple of people that have said they think he is washed up, but I do not think that he is washed up, and he will hit, I just hope it is this season.

You add Headly, and we just hope he stays healthy and hits something like he has shown in the past, and Willingham, and you get the three guys I mentioned to hit like they can, there is plenty of offense. I actually think that our 2 speedsters (Gardner and Ellsbury) can and will hit about 15 homers each, with what they bring on the bases and in the outfield, both of these guys are very good offensive players, I actually think we will continue to get 15 - 20 homers from both of these guys for the next few seasons, as long as they both stay healthy.
I like
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 7/22/2014 4:20 pm : link
that we're not in full-sell mode, because outside of Kuroda I don't know who makes sense that teams would want. We're basically just looking for good values and hoping a hot bat or arm can help carry us to win a shit division, which is something I agree with. I do not want to make any bigtime moves like Lee but I'm pretty cool with this move for Headley.
Headly
PaulN : 7/22/2014 4:31 pm : link
Is a guy that did have that 1 good season, but bringing him into this clubhouse, I think the guy can give us a good glove and if he can just hit about 20 homers and give us a .750 - .800 OPS, which I believe is realistic, that would be good enough, you then add a guy like Asdrubal Cabrera in the off season, and give the kid Refsnyder a shot at second, you then have a decent infield, or potentially decent infield. The kid will need help on his defense, but he seems to be able to hit, that is for sure. I think Cabrera could come cheap, and if you can get him on a 3 - 4 years deal at 4 - 5 mil per season, then do it, if he is asking a lot, fuck him. I just do not want to throw a 7 years 140 mil contract at Ramirez, who is injury prone, or give up a 2 - 3 year deal for 15 mil per season at Reyes either, and those are the type of things that Cashman does, and it is killing this team.
Osi
PaulN : 7/22/2014 4:35 pm : link
I agree completely, Headly and Willingham both are cheap and you do not need to give up shit for them. I just hope the Willingham rumors are true, and they don't go give up the farm for a guy like Carlos Gonzalez and then sign him to a mega contract. They can not afford to add another horrible contract, and I won't even address Lee, he is a piece of shit, and I want no part of him.

I think we are actually saying the same thing. I'm saying that currently Lee has the ability to block a trade to NYY. I think you are saying the same. I think I worded what I said incorrectly the first time. My point is that he likely won't waive that without compensation of some sort -meaning picking up his option or maybe extending it. And I want no part of that.

Seen Haedley play that much this year. To those that have how has his defense been this year given his back issues? If his defense is still top notch then that is a big boost for this team.

We need to address second base too and I would love to see a trade for an above average defender even if he isn't a big bat if we don't have to give up much.

We are stuck with Jeter's below average defense at short obviously and this team sorely needs to upgrade their infield defense. If Headley is healthy and we can upgrade the second base defense (enough with Roberts and his league leading number of errors), I think that would help this team out tremendously.
