The Charles situation is similar to what the Giants encountered with Osi Umenyiora. The Chiefs chose to pay Charles before they had to, following his breakout 2009 season. Charles took the security of a six-year deal, with $13MM guaranteed, and gave up some long-term upside. That turned out to be a pretty good move, because Charles - like Osi - suffered a serious injury in what would otherwise have been his contract year.
Fast-forward a couple of years, and Charles appears underpaid, relative to peers like McCoy, Forte and Foster. Would that justify a holdout? I think you can make a reasonable case either way. All that really matters - if he does hold out - is whether KC is prepared to ride it out with Knile Davis, De'Anthony Thomas, Joe McKnight & co.
And this is another good reason to wait as long as possible
If they're "making progress" he plans to show.
Not sure how he will define that, but whatever.
What's funny (to me) is that he signed his current deal when Haley was coaching the team and had him listed as the backup to Thomas Jones.

Also, should this actually drag on, KC will be really, really shitty this year.
