NFT: Advice about NYC

gump71 : 7/22/2014 9:57 pm
I was just wondering if anyone could offer advice about hotels in NYC. Taking the wife and son to a Mets game in early August and have no idea where to stay. I was told by the wife that she doesn't want to stay in Times Square. I've only been there once, and stayed with a friend, so I have no preference. Any advice is really appreciated.
find a hotel in Queens

along the 7 subway line.

It 'll be much cheaper than staying in Manhattan.
How much do you want to spend?

how do you plan on getting to Citifield?

In NYC I usually stick with hotel names I know - major chains or otherwise recommended hotels.

but, I'm there practically every other week on business so it's easy to do that when I'm not paying.
You should specify price range

We stayed at 70 Park Ave., which is a Kimpton. Very nice, but not cheap. Then again, little is in NY.
I guess price range would help.

I was thinking up to $250 but I'm not sure what that might get. I haven't decided about how to get to the City (maybe train). I was planning on taking the 7 train to the game. I suggested Queens or Brooklyn to the wife thinking it would be cheaper. I was overruled.
I've found Affinia to be a good quality sub-luxury chain

and the Affinia Shelbourne (36th and Lex) gets good reviews and is in your price range.

I haven't stayed at that one, but I have at other Affinias in NY and they were nice.

I think you can get the 7 train

from Grand Central if you stay in Manhattan.

I've stayed at the Washington Square Hotel in greenwich village, it was nice, clean, affordable, but small rooms.

I also stayed at a Courtyard Marriott near Bryant Park that is probably in that price range.

As a Mets fan

I would simply avoid them all together and spend the ticket/parking/vendor $$ on a nice dinner, show, and a $50 Bi Chinatown hooker that will at least give you both your $'s worth for the sucky, sucky.
Be careful where you park...
BamaBlue : 7/23/2014 8:06 am : link
I parked my car about 6 blocks from Citi field. I was only gone for about an hour, but someone broke into my car. The good news was that nothing was stolen... there was however vandalism. When I got back to my car, there were two Mets tickets on the front dash.

Are you not from around here? We could have warned you about that part of town.
Penn Station also has trains to Citi

I've found it's pretty efficient going out there, not as good coming back but still not bad, and it's a whole lot more comfortable than the 7. That also opens up Herald's Square/Hell's Kitchen as possible places to stay.

If you're going to leave out of Penn, might as well stay in Secaucus, IMO. Meadowlands Plaza is a decent, cheap hotel (~$100) that has a shuttle back and forth to Secaucus jct. 10min train ride to Penn Station.

There are a million hotels on the east side near GCT

Don't know about rates, but that's easy access to the 7 train and a much less offensive area than Times Square.
The Bedford Hotel...
manh george : 7/23/2014 10:46 am : link
is a nice, quiet, clean private hotel in a pretty neighborhood, not far from the 7 at Grand Central. Very few amenities, but lots nearby. See link. Close to your price.

Waldorf Astoria is very nice, and historic
Dave : 7/23/2014 1:15 pm : link
and the price may not be as bad as you'd expect
Thanks for all the great advice,

especially about ways to save money by not going to the game. Someone I work with recommended staying in Tarrytown and taking the train down. I'm going to look into that as well. Thanks again.
