NFT: Malwarebytes

Matt M. : 7/23/2014 7:02 am
I first saw this malware protection recommended here on BBI. I have been using a free version for at least a few years now. Recently, an update on the database performed and now I have a new version which is a trial and the trial is about to expire. Does anyone know if I can continue using this version? Will it update? Is there another version or another trusted malware protection that is free?
If the trial expires,

uninstall and download the free one.
it will update fine for malware

it won't do any realtime protection or scanning when the trial expires. You will have to run manual scans but it will still work.
Just to be clear

Maalwarebytes is a great program for finding and cleaning up malware, but it is NOT a comprehensive protection program against viruses and malware. You should have a real-time protection program running at all times and use Malwarebytes as a secondary product,

I only use it as a secondary item to manually scan for malware. I have Avast running for Antivirus, etc.
I just downloaded

malwarebytes on a new computer a few days ago.

it wasn't a trial, it was a the free version. I could see the pay options, but they were ghosted. It has no expiration date.

And I agree, malwarebytes is something to run weekly, but not providing real-time protection.

Their new version takes a a fraction of the time if you use the threat detection scan.
Thanks.

I'll uninstall and download the free version, which is what I had for years anyway.
Get rid of it completely

The new version is rife with rootkit holes, malwarbytes bites now, it's been overrun and is not terribly safe anymore.
At the end of the install

make sure to UNCHECK enable free trial.

Is that true? i thought it was only if you used Bitlocker to encrypt your hard drive.

I don't on my home computer.

Is there other situations with rootkit issues?
The genuine product isn't the problem

It's that there's a ton of mirrors out there claiming to be Malwarebytes, and it's a modified version that carries a shitload of malware.

If you do go with Malwarebytes, be absolutely sure you're downloading the real deal.

As for Matt's question, it's not much of a real-time tool.

Quick update
Matt M. : 7/23/2014 6:58 pm : link
I just uninstalled the product and downloaded the free version from the real site (Malwarebytes.org). it doesn't say Free Trial Version, but free version. After installing, it still registers as the same trial as before, with the same 2 days left.
Just an FYI
Matt M. : 7/23/2014 7:16 pm : link
Had to download and run their clean install tool to completely remove all traces of the software. Re-installing it, I was able to uncheck the default trial of the pro version. I must have missed that when it updated to the latest version the first time around.
Did you completely
pjcas18 : 7/23/2014 7:16 pm : link
uninstall first?

paste a screen shot of your version, does it look like this?

Where does yours say 8 days remaining?

Matt M. : 7/23/2014 7:24 pm : link
I did a full uninstall, but the registry entry remained. I manually deleted it, but still downloaded and ran their cleanup tool. Before re-installing it cleanly without the checkbox selected for the trial, when I first opened the program, the gui had the number of days remaining. I think it was on the title bar, but I don't remember. This is before it started scanning.

I'll add, that previously, where your title bar indicates free version, mine indicated trial or free trial. thankfully, it is now fine.
New question about scan results
Matt M. : 7/23/2014 7:38 pm : link
The last 3 times I've scanned, the only detected items are for FreeCausetb. This seems to be a toolbar that is supposed to be able to be uninstalled. However, I don't see it on the list of programs in the control panel. Any thoughts or suggestions. So far, an internet search hasn't been hasn't been helpful.
It also isn't on a list of extensions
Matt M. : 7/23/2014 7:39 pm : link
or add-ons for Firefox. I quarantine the items and delete each time. But, they keep showing up.
Just quarrantine
pjcas18 : 7/23/2014 7:40 pm : link
everything it reports as malicious, isn't that an option?
Yes.
Matt M. : 7/23/2014 7:49 pm : link
But, the same items come up every time. I want to completely remove the FreeCause app, but i can't find it.
OK
Matt M. : 7/23/2014 8:30 pm : link
I think I've deduced this is actually the UPromise toolbar, which I want to retain. Should I add this root folder to the exclusions. Or just quarantine it every time?
