From the Alzheimer's Association website:

Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. Memory loss is an example. Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia.

Dementia is a description. Alzheimer's is a specific disease that causes dementia. Parkinson's in it's latter stages can cause dementia. Vascular dementia is also a cause of memory loss and behavior issues.

Non have cures. All of the current meds at best slow the progression if the disease. Very difficult for a patient to know there is no cure.
Or do they...

know there's no cure:)
If you exercise your brain

starting in your late 50's doing things like brain teasers, crosswords, problem solving on a daily basis, if that would help against dementia?

downhill very fast and was institutionalized within three years. Died at a very young 67.

Sad to see anyone get this terrible disease.

I believe so ... and I read once to have this attitude ... If you can't remember something - Don't accept it ... ask people or try to find out what you forgot ... get the answer somehow ... Your brain is remarkable ... it will find a new path to that memory if you give it the chance and help ...
My aunt has dementia

which is worse in my opinion...At least with Alzheimer's they can give meds that may slow it down. With dementia there is nothing they can do. Both are horrible.
I'm been on

med's for almost 2 years.
I'm 76 and exercise my brain by being on BBI, playing Texas Hold'm and managing my stock portfolio.
So far I'm not broke so I guess my medicine is working.

Lost my mother to Alzheimer's

The doctor in charge of her told us to start eating Blueberries. He said there is no cure but Blueberries seem to do a great job in preventing Alzheimer's. That was 20 years ago. My two older brothers are both in their 70's now. Thank God no signs of Alzheimer's. We don't know if its because of the Blueberries but we are not about to stop to find-out
My dad has it now

Prayers for your dad, Dave, and to Mr. Bowlen. God bless.

much about him based on the quality and character of his teams. Hope he deals with his illness as gracefully as possible.
