NFT: Knicks chat 7/23

DanMetroMan : 7/23/2014 8:22 am
Potential #1 overall 2015 pick Emmanuel Mudiay is skipping college to play 1 year in China (1.2 million). He cited financial issues (though many think the prep school where he went was the issue) and I think China is a fantastic choice given the future potential marketing ability.

Chris Herring argues THjr could be best used as a trade chip

Wow. Really?
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/23/2014 11:07 am : link
That seems like a lot.
If I'm the wolves
giantsfan44ab : 7/23/2014 11:16 am : link
I'd want building blocks. Mirotic and mcdermott are good complimentary scorers but they aren't players you could build around like wiggins, Thompson or even potentially barnes
Thompson
EricNY33 : 7/23/2014 11:19 am : link
isn't a building block player. Neither is Barnes. I like both but neither are cornerstone players.
It really behooves
kmed : 7/23/2014 11:21 am : link
the Wolves to get as many teams involved as possible to get the most that they can.
Real interest?
GIANTSr01 : 7/23/2014 11:24 am : link
Or Chicago leaking stories to get their main rival Cleveland to up their offer?

I'm firmly in the camp that Cleveland all but guaranteed LeBron that they would trade for Love. I think these leaks get the Cavs to blink and include a 2nd 1st with Bennett/Wiggins.
They are moreso
giantsfan44ab : 7/23/2014 11:24 am : link
Than mcdermott is. I don't think anyone thought Harden was a building block 4 years ago.

I know people have their issues with KLove but he has been a top 3 player in PER for the past 4 years or so. It's not his fault the Wolves haven't progressed.

I honestly think Flip Saunders is going to wait as long as he can before he trades Love. I think he'll try and convince him to stay first because odds are none of these guys will come close to replacing him.
There have been conflicting reports about Wiggins.
kmed : 7/23/2014 11:26 am : link
The fact that Wiggins has not signed leads me to believe that the Cavs aren't dead set on not including him, but this could be a way to get the Cavs to fold. Maybe the Cavs have offered Wiggins and the Wolves want more. I'd say Wiggins is the guy that I would want, but we don't know the details of the conversations. If not Wiggins, this offer isn't bad at all. In fact, I'm not sure I'd do this if I'm the Bulls.
Supposedly
nygiants16 : 7/23/2014 11:29 am : link
the Wolves on want whoever gets Love to take on Martin and Barrea as well...i think thats why the Cavs are hesitating...not only is MInnesota want Wiggins Waiters Bennet AND 1st round picks but they also want them to take on Martin or Barrea
I do it
EricNY33 : 7/23/2014 11:30 am : link
if only because I know Kevin Love and Derrick Rose immediately make the Bulls a contender in the East. It's no different than them making a push for Melo this summer. Now we don't know what Mirotic or McDermott are going to be as NBA players. I like what I've seen from both, but you in my opinion you take the devil you know over the one you don't.

The Wolves are probably a top 4-5 seed in the East these past few seasons and that's with Love surrounded by crap.
I just don't like the direction the Bulls have gone in.
kmed : 7/23/2014 11:32 am : link
They were built on defense and now they are getting rid of all the good defensive players and bringing in guys like Gasol and maybe Love? I don't like it. Love would have been a great addition instead of Gasol, with guys like Deng.

Bulls have offered Taj Gibson, Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic to the Wolves for Kevin Love. (via @sheridanhoops)

taking Love out of this for a second, does any team in the league trade just Wiggins straight up for that offer?
I picked the ripped-looking shot for one single reason:

He clearly added muscle-mass by the time of the summer league vs. season-end, and photos from last year don't show that.

Where did you hear the stuff about Barea and Waiters? I've heard from local MN radio that the Wolves want them to take Martin only and that they are asking for Bennett/Wiggins (supposedly Cavs are willing to deal those 2) plus multiple 1st round picks. The hold ups are the picks and Martin.

Woj has mentioned it multiple times that the Wolves are sitll asking for a lot in negotiations even with Wiggins in the deal...he said the hold up is the picks...

he said Wolves want Wiggins Waiters and Bennet with the multiple picks and they want to unload Martin or Barrea...thats why the Cavs made the deal for the non guaranteed contracts

I havnt changed my stance i still think he is going to be stud stretch 4...has range all the way to the 3 point line...

Needs to get stronger though, needs to rebound better and his defense will need to improve when playing for Thibs...he is not a 5 in the NBA right now to weak and not a rim protector...

Oh ok, I thought you meant Martin and Barea.

I haven't heard about them wanting Waiters either (though not surprised). Definitely agree that the picks is the holdup though.

Because basketball is played on both ends of the floor. What good is stopping someone if you can't score?

And although he slipped a little last season (could be the effect of playing for MDA) Gasol has been a pretty solid defender for most of his career.
I get that Eric.
kmed : 7/23/2014 12:02 pm : link
Offensively, they were lacking a bit in the playoffs. They needed a compliment to Rose, but I don't think they needed to blow it up and change the whole strength of the team. I think they should have searched for a way to find a complimentary scorer with Rose.
I'm convinced that Gasol
kmed : 7/23/2014 12:03 pm : link
is a shell of himself. He's not Boozer on defense, but I think his knees are going to be an issue moving forward. Not someone I'd feel comfortable relying on.
How long do bulls
GMEN46 : 7/23/2014 12:20 pm : link
Have to wait to trade pau? Makes no sense if they get love to keep pau.
No matter ho wmany offensive guys
nygiants16 : 7/23/2014 12:22 pm : link
the Bulls add Thibs is still going to go with Defense to close out games...its the way he is and it is wha the knows...

Rose Butler Dunleavy Gibson Noah will probably close games for the Bulls...
I think Gasol's knees will certainly be a problem
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/23/2014 12:25 pm : link
when you consider that Thibs doesn't go easy on his players in terms of rest or minute-control. He's a full-tilt, full-time coach. Not sure Gasol can really go like that anymore.
That's my point 16.
kmed : 7/23/2014 12:27 pm : link
I don't think it was smart of them to go away from their strength and what their coach likes to do. If they now trade those guys for Love, it will hurt even more. I thought they were really close to being where they needed to be, they just needed a complimentary scorer to Rose for playoff time. I didn't think they need to overhaul their team.

I dont think Gasol will have to worry about big minutes....he is going to get the Boozer treatment start the game and the scond half play entire 1st and 3rd and then sit 2nd and 4th for Gibson and Noah...

Love might hurt on defense, but he's going to bolster the rebounding AND the offense enough to offset that. Similar to what adding Carmelo would've done for them.

Adding All-Star to Superstar level talent never hurts your team. Plus having Thibs there those guys will defend better than they ever have before. Look at what JVG did for players like Allan Houston and Larry Johnson. Neither were good defensive players but JVG got Houston to play better defense and got LJ to become one of the better defenders on those Knick teams.
Our defense was better
kmed : 7/23/2014 12:37 pm : link
because the other team had like 9 possessions a game.

Thibs' solution
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 7/23/2014 12:43 pm : link
to Boozer's shitty D from the PF spot was to replace him with Gibson down the stretch.

He won't have that option with Love and that's going to be an interesting dynamic to see play out if he goes there.

I really like Love. I defended him during the season when others called him overrated. He's an absolutely elite offensive player. His combination of 3pt shooting and rebounding is straight up historic. But the injuries and awful defense are definitely holes in his game. Still, I consider him the 2nd best PF in the game to Blake Griffin. Aldridge is up there too but I think I'd go Love in that comparison. Anthony Davis is going to run the league in a couple of years and lap these above 3 guys soon enough, but I can't put him above Love yet.

MookGiants : 7/23/2014 12:44 pm : link
owner should fire everyone in his basketball operations if they believe Mirotic, Gibson, and McDermott is a better off than Wiggins, Bennett, and a 1st.

Wiggins has legitimate star potential. That's the only way teams like Minnesota win big, is if they hit the jackpot on a player. The chances of that are much higher with Wiggins than they are any player the Bulls want to give.

BREAKING: Interim Clippers CEO Parsons testifies Doc Rivers will quit if Donald Sterling remains owner.

http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/2014/07/22/clippers-ceo-and-shelly-sterling-testify/BQFQnxa151kCFNt6UbpoZK/story.html

LOS ANGELES (AP) The interim CEO of the Los Angeles Clippers testified Tuesday that coach Doc Rivers told him he will quit if Donald Sterling remains the owner of the team.

CEO Richard Parsons testified at a trial to determine whether Sterlings wife, Shelly, can sell the team for $2 billion to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer as the NBA looks to force Donald Sterling from the league over racist statements.

Doc is troubled by this maybe more so than anybody else, Parsons said about Rivers, who is black. If Mr. Sterling continues as owner, he does not want to continue as coach.

Parsons said he fears there would also be an exodus of key players, including team captain Chris Paul, who heads the NBA players union.

The judge stopped Parsons from giving an account of his conversations with Paul when an NBA lawyer objected over privacy issues.

but I am glad Shannon Brown was waived. I can't stand that dude.
We discussed Tyler earlier, so I repeat:
manh george : 7/23/2014 4:50 pm : link
holding onto Tyler depends upon whether they pick up another experianced 3. If they do, either Early is gone (hgighly unlikey, make a 2 for 1 trade (highly unlikely), or need for Tyler to accept $100,000 on 9/15 when his full contract would become guaranteed, and wait for a slot. If the latter occurs, the question becomes whether he accepts a D-League slot and remains Knick property, goes overseas, or gets an offer elsewhere.

None of the alternatives seem cast inc ement.
