NFT: Rangers and Chris Kreider comes to terms

AFNavy : 7/23/2014 9:29 am
The Rangers and Chris Kreider have settled on a TWO-YEAR deal worth $2.35 million in year one and $2.60 million in year two
sounds good to me

Now it is Brassard's turn.
thats better than inking Zucc to a one year deal....
Torrag : 7/23/2014 9:41 am : link
tho there is some reporting that may be a stopgap with both sides willing to entertain talks in season toward a multi year deal.
Good
Deej : 7/23/2014 9:46 am : link
Always good to get these bridge contracts done quickly. Hopefully there was little animosity. Dubinsky and Callahan by all accounts never got over what they thought were overly hard tactics from Sather on the bridge deals.

But would have liked to see Kreider locked down long term. Obviously counldnt be done under current cap constraints. Though I advocated trading Zucc, which would have given us prospects and room to resign some of our guys or extend Kreider for 5-6 years.
the guy I wish they had tried to deal is Brassard
Greg from LI : 7/23/2014 9:47 am : link
He wants way too much money, still has the kind of upside that could net them a nice return, and they could slot Miller in his spot. Oh well.

JonC : 7/23/2014 9:48 am : link
Put me in the camp that doesn't want to give Brassard multi years, not at $5M+, the dude disappears too often. Get Staal's extension done or trade him if it's time, though I'd prefer to trade DG instead.

Looking at other contracts for C's, I think he could get what he's asking for. If we could get him under 5, I'd be okay with that.
I don't doubt that, Brett
Greg from LI : 7/23/2014 9:56 am : link
I just don't think he's worth it.
if Broussard goes, who plays center?
oipolloi : 7/23/2014 9:59 am : link
center is by far and away the Rangers weakest position. DB has that as leverage.

JT Miller is not ready for a #2C job. Im not sure he'll ever be a #2C -- his future may well be at wing.

I agree - ideally, those roles are filled by youth, but it's hard to pencil in a young guy as a 2C early on unless he's a truly superior prospect. It's much harder to pencil in young guys in the NHL than the NFL, imo, making it that much harder to let quality guys go.
We're far too thin at C

2 year deal clutch
Good point by Brooks
Kyle in NY : 7/23/2014 10:43 am : link
Ryan O'Reilly gets $6M in his RFA deal with Colorado. When it's Stepan's turn next season that's the number he'll be aiming for. And his offensive production has exceeded O'Reilly's. Something to keep in mind.
Great news. I'm hoping that they have the parameters

of a long-term deal arranged with Zucc, that can get finalized after January 1, because he's a keeper too.

arcarsenal : 7/23/2014 10:52 am : link
There's the bridge. We will get outstanding value on that deal for the next 2 years but he's going to get PAID after that. Hopefully we can afford it.
He's still an RFA after the two years.

Brassard has been
Sandgluff : 7/23/2014 10:59 am : link
our best forward in the playoffs the past two seasons. And you want to get rid of him. Probably the same people who wanted to keep Boyle. The cap is going to go up from here, 5m for a 2nd line center is going to be a bargain.
No, Boyle leaving was fine with me
JonC : 7/23/2014 11:01 am : link
If NYR inks Brassard to a multi-year, so be it, they know better than me.
No, he wasn't their best forward in the playoffs
Greg from LI : 7/23/2014 11:02 am : link
Hagelin, Marty, Stepan all have a better claim to that.
And Nash.

Yes. We're still not going to be able sign him for < 3 per if he has the couple of seasons I think he will.

Yeah, my hope is that the RFA status would give us some leverage to get a team-friendly deal. At least better than if he were a UFA.
Greg, over the course of
Sandgluff : 7/23/2014 11:06 am : link
two seasons its been Brassard, and if you want to argue that two players on the 1st line were better this past season in Stepan and Marty that's fine, but your comparing him to 1st line players which is a compliment. As for Hagelin he had a good post season this past year, lets hoep he continues with that play. Either way, Brassard has been a gamer for us when it matters and he is still relatively young. I'd like to see if him and Zucc can continue to build chemistry.

I hope so. I think at least one of these next 2 years will be legit 30+ goal years for him.

Also.. LOUD NOISES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not as high on him offensively as you are.
BrettNYG10 : 7/23/2014 11:11 am : link
But think he's going to be a fantastic all-around player. Great forechecker, likes being physical, etc. If he had a better play-making C, I think he'd hit 30. Not ruling it out, just saying I find it unlikely.
Stepan's only a first liner because the Rangers don't have a real

Is a 2, and Barssard a 3, and we want to let Brassard walk, then we have a 2 and 2 other centers that are 4th liners, really good way to run a railroad.
I love how people

watch a hockey game and focus entirely on the score sheet. No big deal if Boyle goes...but Brassard...amazing playoff player.
Put me in the camp that was OK letting Boyle go...

until I saw the incredibly affordable deal he settled for with Tampa. Boyle at 3 yr/$6mm vs Tanner Glass at 3yr/$4.5mm.... i mean, cmon...

Anyways, looks like the King is selling his pad. Buyer will need to a cleaning service to fumigate the bedroom at least a couple of times before its safe to move in.

And he was told he wouldn't get that chance here. The money wasn't the issue.

I'll buy it.

And yeah, Boyle wanted a different role. I respect that.

Letting Boyle
PaulN : 7/23/2014 3:02 pm : link
Go, now that we se that Sather did nothing to address his loss but bring in bumbs, was a major fuck up, letting Brassard go, who is a better player would be even a bigger fuck up. We let Boyle, Carcillo, Diaz, Dorsette, Stralman and Pouliot.

We brought in Glass, Lombardi, Stempniak, Boyle, Hunwick, Kampfer, and Kostka.

If anyone is alright with that, they need to get their heads examined.
A team
PaulN : 7/23/2014 3:09 pm : link
That lacked grit and toughness, lets the three toughest players on the team go, and adds players that are soft. Not to add on to that but we also lost Callahan and added St Louis, and although he is more skilled, he is a pee wee while Callahan was also tough and gritty. Plus Pouliett was also playing pretty tough last season, he was filling a role on that line. This team is not a playoff team right now, and if they are they will need players to improve dramatically to do it, like Stepan, Brassard, Haglin, Kreider, Zuccarella, and Moore. They also need Lundqvist to be great again, and they need the real Nash and the real St Louis to be there all season, you think that is going to happen?
Boyle was one of the three toughest players on the team?
Greg from LI : 7/23/2014 3:10 pm : link

"this isnt a playoff team right now"

Unless you can predict Hank is going to miss 50 games next year with injury (or syphillis), it's a playoff team.

Can they get by Pittsburgh, Philly or CBJ? Dunno, but its definitely one of the best 8 teams in the ECF. Cmon now.
EC....
MetsAreBack : 7/23/2014 4:12 pm : link
guess i'm just used to typing ECF when it comes to this team. They've missed the playoffs once since 2006... on the last game of the season... in overtime... but because they lost Stralman, Pouliot and Boyle and replaced them with Boyle, Stempniak and Glass a team that was a top 5 team in the league from December to the SCF isnt a playoff team now?

ok
....
BrettNYG10 : 7/23/2014 4:16 pm : link
I'd actually bet that they have more points this year than last. It's about the playoffs and their ability and depth to withstand four rounds. The team peaked at the right time this year (minus Nash). I think Boston's a bit on the decline, and think the East will be wide open come playoff time.
