Kelly Johnson to the DL with a groin strain. Interesting possibilities for call-ups.

#Yankees place INF Kelly Johnson on 15-day DL (strained left groin); select RHP Chris Leroux from Triple-A @railbandits.

This is to give the bullpen a break after last night...
Dunedin81 : 7/23/2014 1:28 pm : link
they will DFA Leroux in a day or two and make a decision.
I bet it's Pirela instead
Greg from LI : 7/23/2014 1:29 pm : link
He's more versatile in the field and they likely don't seem him as a long-term piece so they won't be concerned with having him ride the bench for a few weeks rather than playing every day in Scranton, which is a legit question with Refsnyder.
Tyler Austin

has a homer and a double in two AB's today. His wrist may be coming around..
Yeah he's been very good of late...
Dunedin81 : 7/23/2014 1:37 pm : link
if he can finish the season like this and start next season at SWB he should be firmly back on the prospect map.

This makes me happy. I'd love to see Austin stick it up the would-be prospect gurus' collective asses.

is 3-3 with two 2B's.
I'd rather call up Zoilo,
Pego61 : 7/23/2014 1:54 pm : link
assuming that Teixeira will be back shortly.

1B: Teixeira, McCann
2B: Roberts, Ryan
SS: Jeter, Ryan
3B: Headley, Wheeler

I don't really think they need another infielder like Pirela (although he could play some outfield). Let's give Zoilo a chance to platoon a bit with Ichiro. Only issue is that he's a better lefty hitter than righty. Still, Ichiro has been a zero lately. Just play Zoilo a few games and see what happens.
I think it's pretty clear at this point that they don't consider

Almonte a big league player. You can disagree with that, and you may be right, but if they haven't given him a chance by this point I doubt it's going to happen.
I unfortunately agree with you.
Pego61 : 7/23/2014 2:01 pm : link
He probably isn't a big league caliber player. But having to watch Ichiro everyday makes you wonder how much worse Zoilo could be. He's on the 40 man already. What's the risk in trying?

Austin, Judge, and Refsyder(if they keep him there) is interesting. I'd personally like to see him ack at 2b where we need help.
I don't disagree
Greg from LI : 7/23/2014 2:11 pm : link
I've never liked Ichiro much as a player in the first place, and he just isn't remotely an everyday player at this point. As soon as Beltran started getting hurt they should have given Almonte some starts over Ichiro, but they apparently won't do that unless they have no choice.
Almonte sucks
Phil in LA : 7/23/2014 2:14 pm : link
and he should probably give up switch hitting.
He's not much worse than Kyle Roller
Greg from LI : 7/23/2014 2:18 pm : link
And you're always promoting him.
If Tex went on the DL,
Pego61 : 7/23/2014 2:20 pm : link
I'd hope they would call up Roller. Honestly, these young guys might not be major league quality. But in a short span, you never know what you might get out of them. Sometimes, you just have to try, rather than give the retreads you have yet another chance.

don't know if it's orders from Cashman or Joe does it on his own. But, Almonte and alot of youth never get a really good chance to show what they have. God forbid your young and go 0-8 and your banished to the bench.

He's way worse the Roller

who just grinds and hits for power.
Hits for power?
Greg from LI : 7/23/2014 2:37 pm : link
Almonte's slugging % is higher than Roller's in Scranton.
Neither would probably be much help.
BeerFridge : 7/23/2014 2:56 pm : link
They're both not major leaguers (probably)
Roller has
Phil in LA : 7/23/2014 3:03 pm : link
the second most homers in the org over two levels and his advantage over Almonte in on base more than makes up for their .006 difference in SLG.
