NFT: UFC: Jones-Gustafsson 2 Postponed; DC gets Title Shot

The long-awaited rematch between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson, scheduled for UFC 178 in Las Vegas on September 27, has been postponed after the Swede suffered an injury in training this week. Although there are scores of hungry challengers waiting for a crack at Jones’ crown, few can rival Daniel Cormier's burning desire to topple the champ at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

That's depressing

This rematch plus the McGregor-Poirier fight was going to make this an awesome UFC night. Was really looking forward to this one.

I'm definitely only a casual UFC fan, so this probably shifted from a big event at a friends house with a shit load of beer to me just downloading it for free illegally the next day.
Bones wanted to fight Cormier anyway

Who do you think wins Jon? I wasn't sold on Cormier at HW due to size but boy does he look awesome at 205. I think he can take Bones down. No idea if he can keep him down but leaning towards DC. I just think his wrestling is on another level and unless Jones can keep him away I think it's very winnable for Cormier.

Great fight and Gus can fight the winner.
I hope Jones wins just because

I want to see that Jones-Gustafsson rematch in the worst way possible. Cormier's wrestling should give Jones some fits, but I think Jones ends up winning rather decisively.

What do you guys think about Conor McGregor vs Dustin Proirier? Is Conor the real deal? Can he handle a top 7-8 guy? I'm a huge McGregor fanboy so of course I think so. It's hard to gauge him in that last fight when it didn't even look like Brandao wanted to fight though. Brandao just gave up.

I'm honestly more excited to see the McGregor vs DP fight now.

LM, I lean towards Cormier as well. He rag-dolled Hendo, who's no slouch even though he's 44. Cormier is hungry, his standup is rapidly improving, I think he's Bones' greatest test yet.

One of the great things to watch in MMA is Bones' ability to adjust during a fight, and then roll over his opponent. It will be great intrigue.

As with all the Euro guys I want to see McGregor vs a top tier guy whose wrestling pedigree who might be bit higher level that what he's faced. Poirer is a nice step in the right direction to see where he is. Don't think he's ready for any top 5 types. Plus the UFC needs some Euro draws and for now McGreggor so I think they are going to keep him fighting against legit guys but stear him away from the tougher wresting types.
JohnC yup. It's what

Makes MMA/fighting so interesting. Which guy can impose his will and gameplan.
jones will win.

I'm taking Cormier...
Matt G : 7/24/2014 5:27 am : link
I think he's gonna be too much for Jones... Too much wrestling, too much power...

McGregor's striking and movement...
Matt G : 7/24/2014 5:42 am : link
Remind me of a young Anderson Silva (practically blasphemy, I know)... He has a mountain in front of him to that title... Dustin Poirier is the first BIG step up in competition for him... Poirier is young, athletic, well rounded and he's not going to be intimidated by McGregor... He's finished both common opponents (Holloway, Brandao), he's just as tall, same reach and he's probably physically stronger.. Starching a guy like Poirier aint gonna be easy...

If McGregor gets past Poirier, he gets a Top 5 opponent... Possibly one of the wrestlers (Edgar, Mendes, Lamas)... As LM mentioned, a high level wrestler is always a big test for the Europeans as they just don't have the base...

I think he and Edgar are the only guys in the division that can match Aldo's speed...

Thrilled, I've been waiting to see Jones/Cormier ofr years
EmpireWF : 7/24/2014 8:36 am : link
Even when he was kicking ass at heavyweight in Strikeforce, I insisted Cormier was the one guy who could decisively beat Jones. His career since then as done nothing to persuade me otherwise. Cormier is not going to be outmuscled and wrestling wise, I'd be shocked if Jones gets the advantage. Striking, Cormier has never been in danger (I guess some may use that as a knock against him, not knowing how his chin holds up), but his power is legit.

New champion - Daniel Cormier.

178 looks like a hell of a card with this fight, Dominick Cruz's return against Takeya Mizugaki and the McGregor/Poirier fight.
DC comes out strong.
GiantFilthy : 7/24/2014 9:00 am : link
The whole fight changes once Jones connects on two or three elbows pressing against the cage.

Jones remains champ.

Weidman vs Belfort December 6th. And Sonnen suspended for 2 years.
Hold up. Wasn't Cormier supposed to have surgery?
GiantFilthy : 7/24/2014 9:14 am : link
I guess he's holding off on that?
Looks like it.

Cormier (15-0) suffered a significant tear in his LCL (lateral collateral ligament) approximately 10 days out from his UFC 173 clash against Dan Henderson, while a recent MRI revealed that only 50-percent of the 35-year-old former Olympian's ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) remains intact in his right knee due to years of accumulated wear and tear.

He expects to undergo surgery in San Jose, CA on the first week of July, but only after competing against former two-time NCAA champion Chris Pendleton in an exhibition wrestling match at the UFC Fan Expo in Las Vegas, NV on Saturday, July 5, 2014.

Jones is going to kick the fuck out of that leg.
Meh
Tim in Eternal Blue : 7/24/2014 9:45 am : link
Personally I think Jones destroys DC. Jones is going to eat him up with his range... And if DC takes Bones down... He's gonna get peppered in his guard. Careful what you wish for Daniel... Looks like you got it.

Gusta going down really sucks.

Matt G : 7/24/2014 11:02 am : link
I forget the exact details behind the injury, but one of the ligaments was strained and the other was torn... He was considering the surgery but was reluctant as it would put him on the shelf for a full year...
I'm with you EmpireWF...

Cormier is not a blown up MW (Shogun, Machida, Sonnen, Belfort) and he's not plodding, flat-footed boxer (Rampage, Teixiera)... Jones' advantage will be his reach, but I think Cormier has the speed to close the distance and touch him up... Cormier will have the advantage in the clinch and he is gonna be able to take Jones down... Jones doesn't have a prayer of taking Cormier down, IMO...
