The long-awaited rematch between UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson, scheduled for UFC 178 in Las Vegas on September 27, has been postponed after the Swede suffered an injury in training this week. Although there are scores of hungry challengers waiting for a crack at Jones’ crown, few can rival Daniel Cormier's burning desire to topple the champ at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. |
I'm definitely only a casual UFC fan, so this probably shifted from a big event at a friends house with a shit load of beer to me just downloading it for free illegally the next day.
Who do you think wins Jon? I wasn't sold on Cormier at HW due to size but boy does he look awesome at 205. I think he can take Bones down. No idea if he can keep him down but leaning towards DC. I just think his wrestling is on another level and unless Jones can keep him away I think it's very winnable for Cormier.
Great fight and Gus can fight the winner.
What do you guys think about Conor McGregor vs Dustin Proirier? Is Conor the real deal? Can he handle a top 7-8 guy? I'm a huge McGregor fanboy so of course I think so. It's hard to gauge him in that last fight when it didn't even look like Brandao wanted to fight though. Brandao just gave up.
I'm honestly more excited to see the McGregor vs DP fight now.

LM, I lean towards Cormier as well. He rag-dolled Hendo, who's no slouch even though he's 44. Cormier is hungry, his standup is rapidly improving, I think he's Bones' greatest test yet.
One of the great things to watch in MMA is Bones' ability to adjust during a fight, and then roll over his opponent. It will be great intrigue.

As with all the Euro guys I want to see McGregor vs a top tier guy whose wrestling pedigree who might be bit higher level that what he's faced. Poirer is a nice step in the right direction to see where he is. Don't think he's ready for any top 5 types. Plus the UFC needs some Euro draws and for now McGreggor so I think they are going to keep him fighting against legit guys but stear him away from the tougher wresting types.
If McGregor gets past Poirier, he gets a Top 5 opponent... Possibly one of the wrestlers (Edgar, Mendes, Lamas)... As LM mentioned, a high level wrestler is always a big test for the Europeans as they just don't have the base...
I think he and Edgar are the only guys in the division that can match Aldo's speed...
New champion - Daniel Cormier.
178 looks like a hell of a card with this fight, Dominick Cruz's return against Takeya Mizugaki and the McGregor/Poirier fight.
Jones remains champ.
He expects to undergo surgery in San Jose, CA on the first week of July, but only after competing against former two-time NCAA champion Chris Pendleton in an exhibition wrestling match at the UFC Fan Expo in Las Vegas, NV on Saturday, July 5, 2014.
Jones is going to kick the fuck out of that leg.
Gusta going down really sucks.

Even when he was kicking ass at heavyweight in Strikeforce, I insisted Cormier was the one guy who could decisively beat Jones. His career since then as done nothing to persuade me otherwise. Cormier is not going to be outmuscled and wrestling wise, I'd be shocked if Jones gets the advantage. Striking, Cormier has never been in danger (I guess some may use that as a knock against him, not knowing how his chin holds up), but his power is legit.

Cormier is not a blown up MW (Shogun, Machida, Sonnen, Belfort) and he's not plodding, flat-footed boxer (Rampage, Teixiera)... Jones' advantage will be his reach, but I think Cormier has the speed to close the distance and touch him up... Cormier will have the advantage in the clinch and he is gonna be able to take Jones down... Jones doesn't have a prayer of taking Cormier down, IMO...
