NFT: Tigers trade for Soria

DanMetroMan : 7/23/2014 10:38 pm

A source tells Scout.com's Kyle Bogenschutz that the Rangers have agreed to trade Joakim Soria to the Tigers.
Bogenschutz hears Corey Knebel and Jake Thompson, two right-handers in the Tigers' system, will go the other way in the deal. In Soria, the Tigers are acquiring a pitcher with a 2.70 ERA and 0.87 WHIP who has saved 17 games for the Rangers this season. Given Joe Nathan's struggles in Detroit, Soria could immediately take over as the ninth-inning reliever for the Tigers.

sense for both teams but Daniels got a nice return here.
Yanks scouts

watching Ian Kennedy tonight.
wonder what
sinctybldh : 7/23/2014 10:55 pm : link
ian kennedy would cost? kind of like the idea of having a home grown kid return but again the cost will be a big factor.
shouldn't be
Phil in LA : 7/23/2014 10:58 pm : link
much.
Knebel
Deej : 7/23/2014 11:06 pm : link
The whole point of taking a college reliever that high in the draft is that he can rush to the majors and you therefore wont have to do trades like this (plus they sign below slot). So scratching my head here unless Detroit really believes you need a dominant closer (you dont). Knebel could have just gotten the call and would have probably been pretty good.
I'd presume this means Feliz

He almost had a perfect game today...
Fuck Ian Kennedy
Greg from LI : 7/24/2014 9:38 am : link
I have no need to ever hear another quote of "I really think I pitched well" after giving up something like 8 runs.
Phil why on earth do you think he would not
bhill410 : 7/24/2014 9:42 am : link
command a large amount?
Kennedy
DanMetroMan : 7/24/2014 9:43 am : link
is one of the best available SP. Padres already turned down "whatever you want" from the Angels system (admittedly horrible system) for him. He's absolutely going to cost legit talent. Padres have no incentive to give him away.
Kennedy is WAY overrated
Stan from LA : 7/24/2014 11:13 am : link
Dumped by the D'Backs and pitching in the Yellowstone Park called Petco I want no part of him.

DanMetroMan : 7/24/2014 11:19 am : link
Towers is a horrible GM. He also "dumped" Justin Upton etc. #2 There are stats that take away the "ballpark" effect. Kennedy has a 3.10 FIP aka he's been very good, ballpark or not. He stunk last year in Arizona, was solid the year prior and was very good in 2011... in Arizona. Kennedy is striking out more hitters than ever... and no fluke.. his velocity is the best it's ever been (again ballpark doesn't make you throw harder).... oh yeah... road era 3.18, 1.16 whip... home 4.18, whip 1.28... but hey it's all PETCO...

Agree with you but just as an aside, FIP is not park adjusted. FIP- and xFIP- is though, and he's a top 30 pitcher in both those stats as well.
forget about Kennedy...

You are right. xFIP is park adjusted. My mistake. Either way, I'm not suggesting Kennedy is a stud, but he's very solid and having a good year regardless of the park + team controlled.
Kennedy is a solid mid rotation guy for any team.
BeerFridge : 7/24/2014 11:53 am : link
If he's cheap, prospect wise, I'll be ok with IPK round two on the Yanks.
How towers has gotten not just one but
bhill410 : 7/24/2014 11:56 am : link
2 gm jobs blows my mind. I still want to cry everytime I think of what justin Upton was gotten for. I think the mets were offering Murphy and any pitcher not named wheeler and the braves still didn't have to give up minor or tehron. In addition to the fact they got mediocre talent they also gave up Johnson who won the batting title. Never mind the Bauer for Gregorios trade which was possibly worse.
Beer fridge what we have been sayin is that you don't get
bhill410 : 7/24/2014 12:01 pm : link
Players like Kennedy for cheap. Realistically he would require one of severino or judge and possibly both. I know Yankee fans are high on them but both are fringe top 70 prospects. Off the top of my head judge was in the 45 area on laws and not on any of the others and severino was on sickles in the 50s?

I wouldn't trade those guys for Kennedy, no way. I was mostly just chiming in on the Kennedy sucks/No he doesn't argument.

He should be costly. he's arb eligible so you can keep him for a year if he accepts arb or get a pick if he doesn't. And regardless of how good he is, he's a pretty reliable innings eating horse.

No xFIP isn't park adjusted. xFIP is HR rate adjusted based on the amount of fly balls you have up vs league average home run rate.

A stat is only park/league adjusted with a +/- at the end.
For xFIP
Sgrcts : 7/24/2014 1:24 pm : link
If you give up 100 fly balls, it would normalize you to 10 HRs.
Giving up top yankees prospects for Kennedy as a rental
Sgrcts : 7/24/2014 3:02 pm : link
still makes no sense for the Yankees anyway.
But
DanMetroMan : 7/24/2014 3:05 pm : link
Kennedy isn't a rental. He's arbitration eligible after the year.
ah you are right
Sgrcts : 7/24/2014 3:14 pm : link
even still, this isn't the yankees year anyway.
Oh
DanMetroMan : 7/24/2014 3:20 pm : link
I agree there. Just saying for the right team he's worth adding. St. Louis for one.

Overwhelmed???

I'll give you a six-pack and even that's too much.

Asking for both Clarkin and Jagielo...supposedly Yanks are refusing....hope that's the case, Kennedy isn't worth it...

Bowden also claims Yanks are asking about Jorge de la Rosa...why?
Rockies
