NFT: VA teen Alexis Murphy's killer gets two life sentences

Dunedin81 : 7/24/2014 7:16 am
Randy Taylor was convicted of killing 17 year old Alexis Murphy in an earlier proceeding. Yesterday he was sentenced to life in prison on each of two counts. Though he maintains his innocence he offered to discuss her whereabouts in exchange for a twenty year sentence. Taylor is suspected in the disappearance of another young woman in Central VA that remains unsolved.

evidence seems solid. If I was convinced he did it, I would give him the death penalty, the botched two hour execution in Arizona notwithstanding. I assume the lack of a body is why the DA didn't pursue the death penalty. That and perhaps the cost, although appeals are inevitable since he is still maintaining his innocence.

Prayers to the victim and her family and friends. RIP. God bless.
If you go capital...

the IDC folks will swoop in with a capital team, ready to deluge you with umpteen motions that all need to be addressed in writing or in a hearing, something that can be very difficult for a small office with other responsibilities to address. It means if you're not virtually certain you can get a death sentence it's difficult to contemplate. And, moreover, I'm not sure a capital crime could have been proved here. Proving premeditation or a felony that brings it to that level (eg rape) is pretty much impossible without a body.
was this the girl

No, her murder is still unsolved...

this girl was last seen at a gas station in Lovingston. She was still in high school, seemed to be a lovely young woman. A very sad story.
Paul, that was Morgan Harrington

I still can't believe that the Atlanta Public Defenders office spent their entire budget on stopping the DP for that POS that shot up a courtroom, killed a judge, a custom's agent and others. And it was all on video tape. Yet the jury would not approve the DP. Stupid.
They're just doing their job...

And whatever trepidation I have about the DP would be a lot greater if the people defending the accused were run of the mill PDs and court appointed counsel. Some of them are quite dedicated and some of them are quite good, but some are neither and it is rare to find someone who is both.
