Until they stop making studios shit tons of money, no.
And guess what? The Amazing Spider-Man 3 may not even happen now. If Sony wants to keep the rights from Marvel, they have to keep making them. You know what that means? REBOOT!
Fred
Michael Douglas is going to play Hank Pym and Paul Rudd is playing Scott Lang. Rumor is Pym creates the Ant Man suit and Lang ends up stealing it and somehow I guess they end up working together.
Comic con is this weekend and I am interested to see if there is any news on Dr. Strange since he was mentioned in Captain America: Winter Soldier. They are going to have the Dr. Strange movie before Avengers 3.
And I'm not trying to paint myself as some kind of cool guy as a kid because I was a big ol' history dork, but I didn't know anyone who was into comic books after elementary school. Not the sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, or dickheads.
Did this thing just skip a generation from, say, 1985-95?

I'm the same age as you Greg and I was. I didn't talk about it but it was something I did on my own time.

That you would remember that time as a low point for comics is weird because that period actually corresponses with the great comic book speculator bubble. Link - ( New Window )
Overall the entire Avengers line paled in comparison to Marvel's Spider-man and X-Men line of comics. That Avengers line was a clear 3rd in the peaking order at Marvel.
Since Sony owned the movie rights to Spiderman and FOX owned the movie rights to X-Men. The newly formed Marvel Studioes only really controld the movie rights to Avengers and based all their plans around them.
Now to the younger generation, Avengers is #1 as fan favorites based on the movies. Haven't seen any recent sales numbers, so don't know if that popularity from the movies has actually crossed over into sales of the comics.
when I collected comics between '72-'88. I was also a big Spider-Man fan back then, collecting all titles he appeared in. But The X-Men never did it for me. Not even the "new" X-Men when they debuted in that Giant-Size. I have most of those early X-Men starting with #94, but just never cared for it as reading material as much as I enjoyed some of the other comics of that time. I definitely enjoyed the Avengers much more. Heck, I even liked The Defenders more than the X-Men. Heck, I liked The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Inhumans more than I liked The X-Men. hahaha...

I collected comics from about '84-'94. Played role playing games too. Still managed to get laid, even. Of course, it helps to be pretty and have a winning personality.
Jeez, way to blow my entire image of you to pieces.
Meh- those silly categories were silly back then and even sillier now. Had my geek friends, my stoner friends, and my jock friends. Hung out with the stoner friends the most as the chicks were easy.

Why do people act like reboots, endless sequels, and stuff are a new phenomenon?
I thought Ant Man was a joke, I didn't know it was an actual comic book hero.

Is that an admission?

So bad-ass
