in fairness they DID want to keep him. 7 years 175 would have been 25 million per season, good for the 5th biggest salary in the history of the sport at the time, and 2 of those were A-Rod, 1 was Clemens for 1 season. When Cano hit FA
Clemens 28 (1 season)
A-Rod 27.5
Verlander 25.7
A-Rod 25.2
Were the highest salaries ever rewarded
Further, I'm pretty sure if he would have said "listen, make it 180-185 and I'm staying" they would have done it aka 3rd biggest salary EVER
Did people think that Cano would go to Seattle and suck?
I don't think it's a surprise that Cano is playing great and he will continue to do so. The Yankees offered Cano a great deal. They just had doubts about him being worth 25 million a season when he is 38, 39 and 40. Frankly, I have the same doubt. Derek Jeter had to negotiate contracts in his late 30's. Mariano Rivera went year to year in his last seasons. Cano could have taken the 7 year deal from the Yankees and then become a 38 year old free agent. If he's still great, someone will pay him. Chances are, sooner or later, the Mariners will be looking to get out from under the contract and trade Cano (probably back to the Yankees). They'll have to eat a big stack of money to do it. The question is whether they can win the World Series once or twice while Cano and King Felix are in their prime. If they can, then perhaps the risk will have been worth it.
Whitley threw around 70 innings out of the pen in AAA last season and he's at 86 this season. I doubt the Yankees will want him to throw more than 120 innings. Put him in the pen and make him the long man. He can be the first man up on days when a starter makes an early exit.
