Thor, Matz, Flores, and someone in A- or lower who isnt in the our top 15 like Urena, i would do for Tulo. We are giving up 2 of our top 3 pitching prospects and a our top infielder prospect that Collins seems to hate.

I don't want to get into the hole Tulo debate again, but I just think that's an awful lot to give up for an injury prone, older, Colorado player, that makes 20 mil per year. Thor is one of the best pitching prospects in baseball, Flores is one of the best hitting prospects in baseball, Matz has been raved about, plus more? Maybe I give all that up for Stanton, but not so much for Tulo.
They should release Abreu

and let Kirk or Dekker play. Why is he on the roster? This isn't a playoff team

coming into his own? Is he really becoming a power hitting 1st baseman? Like possibly a 30+ homer guy?
Abreu really shouldn't even be playing.
arcarsenal : 7/25/2014 10:57 pm : link
I don't know what Collins is trying to accomplish giving the guy so much PT. I know there's not a "clear" LF option but it's Bobby Abreu. I know the man will be able to get on base when he's 50.. but just enough.
Poor time to mention it, I'm sure
Ten Ton Hammer : 7/25/2014 10:57 pm : link
but non-old Abreu just hit his 30th HR tonight. First MLer to 30 this season.

Nelson Cruz just went yard for his 29th.

Its like beating an old horse. Cruz is a diff story than Jose Abreu. But apparently, the white sox blew everyone out of the water with their offer to Abreu.
Phew...it's a good thing Collins got Tejada back in the

Seething.
Giving Abreu playing time serves no purpose at this point
steve in ky : 7/25/2014 11:01 pm : link
He has sucked as a pinch hitter all season and they certainly don't need him in the OF, just release him at this point and give the time to the younger guys. Have to blame Sandy more than Collins on this one at this point.
What's with these gimmicky HR calls from Cohen?

was only coming here on a long term deal, so that was a no go for good reason. He signed in Baltimore to maximize his next contract -- we're in a bad hitter's park with no DH and therefore couldnt compete on that offer. Remember, he turned down his $14 million QO which would have let him play in a band box for $8 million in Baltimore. He wasnt as guy we could have gotten for a marginally better offer than Balt gave him.

Half of his games are at DH, and his defensive WAR is -0.9 on baseball reference.
when I was making a push
feelflows : 7/25/2014 11:27 pm : link
for Cruz in the offseason nobody argued with me about his hitting. it was about his fielding.

I know he spends a lot of time DHing, and to be honest I have no idea how bad he is in the field. I'm not a scout.

My point is, the argument against it was because of his fielding. I don't think anybody doubted his hitting..at least I hope they didn't.

Oh well.. they didn't sign him, they didn't sign Abreu.. I'm sure they did their due diligence. The answer for slugger has to come from somewhere.
yah
feelflows : 7/25/2014 11:29 pm : link
they've been rolling out Bobby Abreu into LF.. I don't think that defense is as big a priority as you may think.
ok..enough negativity after a win

good things:

- Conforto tearing it up in Brooklyn
- nobody calling Wheeler a bust anymore
- Lucas Duda helps Francesa look like more of an idiot

things are good

Like feel said.. apparently we have no issue trotting an ancient Bobby Abreu out into LF often these days, so.. does it really make a difference? Lagares' range in CF also helps.

Look, the guy sucks in the field. We all know that. But to act like we wouldn't be a better baseball team right now with his bat in our lineup is silly.

But whatever, it's moot.

Abreu starts like once a week at most, so let's not get carried way of comparing defenses. Look at Nelson fielding on fangraphs.com, its not pretty. Mets didnt sign Cruz, fine, he'll now cost heck of a lot more now that we are in an era of the pitcher. Power is now the premium and trading or signing one is gonna cost a lot. Orioles lucked out in this, do you think they are going to pay up now? Possibly, but i see the Yankees/Red Sox doing that more than anything.
arc,
feelflows : 7/25/2014 11:44 pm : link
it just goes to show..sometimes all of these fancy stats don't tell the whole story.

it would've been nice for management to say "fuck fielding stats" and got a slugger to fortify the lineup and given this team much needed balls.

it's not like it was a surprise. we ALL knew they needed a slugger to make a difference this year.
So...
JayBinQueens : 7/25/2014 11:46 pm : link
at some point Parnell will be back.
As it stands we have a really solid 8th and 9th inning with Familia and Mejia... Is he just another arm out of the 'pen?
Are they going to show him off as trade bait?
I don't see how
feelflows : 7/25/2014 11:47 pm : link
the orioles lucked out?

their management wanted more power for the lineup and signed a slugger.

he is what he is. a slugger. he's not a triple crown winner, a gold glove winner or a base stealer.

why does every player have to be a complete player?

I understand the contract he took... it's not CRUZ that pisses me off. It's the REASON they didn't get a slugger. It's cheaper to HOPE that Duda or Davis hits 35 HRs.

I guess the Orioles lucked out in that people thought his power was artificially inflated when in fact it's the same as of last season (unless of course it is inflated by other means and hasn't been caught yet.)
Duda in June and July
Ira : 7/26/2014 8:34 am : link
June - ba 282 - OPS .956
July - ba .288 - OPS .996

It looks like we have our first baseman and clean up hitter.
I was wrong about Duda and I am happy
Headhunter : 7/26/2014 9:11 am : link
to eat crow. With Duda it was a question in his mind if he belonged, his self confidence was the issue. Now that he knows it, he will relax and put up first baseman numbers for years
Hard to count on anything from Parnell...
Italianju : 7/26/2014 9:22 am : link
right now. Also im not sure his contract status, but i think Torres still has a spot in the pen. Edgin has been solid, but one more lefty wouldnt hurt. The core of the bullpen hopefully is Mejia, Familia, and black moving forward. The rest can be filled with kids from the minors and vet pickups id think.

Duda has been great which is awesome for us. It made me go look at Ike's numbers and it looks like he is still sucking.

Headhunter : 7/26/2014 9:48 am : link
“The reports on him (Conforto) were adequate defensively, and we’re seeing way beyond that,” Gamboa said. “For a 21-year-old, he’s miles ahead of most guys I see come into professional baseball. That was his reputation coming here. That’s what we were told, except that he runs, throws and fields better than people gave him credit for. The focus was on his bat, but everybody is seeing a more complete player here.”
