Wilson Baltimore Sun: Simple logic behind signing Will Hill

Defenderdawg : 7/26/2014 9:32 am
Quotes from the article:

"There's also the relationship between Giants general manager Jerry Reese and Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome to consider. They're extremely close and Newsome had the benefit of getting a candid assessment from Reese.

"Just being irresponsible," Hill told The Baltimore Sun when asked about his history of problems with drugs. "Yeah, I feel like I've learned. I'm ready to play football. They talked to the Giants and they had nothing but good words to say about me."

“I know a lot in that I’m obviously familiar with the coaches on the New York Giants,” said secondary coach Steve Spagnuolo, a former Giants defensive coordinator. “I’ve talked with those guys in the past, even before Will Hill was available, and I remember them just having glowing remarks about him as a football player. When he walks through the door, he looks like a linebacker and yet he moves around like a safety. He fit right in there."

Seems like the Giants did this kid a solid.

Everyone knows that he has immense talent and if he got his head right, he'd probably be a star. That probably wasn't going to happen in NY as he was probably stuck in a rut and hanging with a bad crowd. He needed a change of scenery and the Giants did that for him even though it hurt the Giants. I look at this situation similar to Chris Carter.

He needs to stay away from

his crowds at home.
I am a huge fan of people getting opportunities...

however, this comment kind of irritates me...

Would've been nice if you had "learned" while with the team that took a chance on you and supported you through all your other "learning opportunities".

I wish Hill the best but all he had to do was play by the established rules.
Agreed. It's possible that being away from home at least during

the season might help. Still, seems like Will Hill is trying his hardest to blow his career.
Yeah any anger at the Giants
kmed : 7/26/2014 9:49 am : link
is certainly displaced. If you are angry, like I am about this situation, it needs to be with Will Hill. He screwed the Giants and he's lucky that they seem to have his best interests at hand. He was going down a bad path here and he was too stupid to realize it.
Kind of selfish, but I only wish Will Hill well as a person

not a football player.

As a football player, he screwed our team over.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
Just another payday for him

These punks who continue to avoid responsibility and still get paid crazy money is a joke. Do you really think he has learned his lesson? What was this is 4th or 5th offence since collage? He should have been a first round pick and was not drafted and that didn’t teach him a thing.

All these players that continue to take advantage of their talent in the wrong way should be banned from the league for two years. Make them go out and work for the food on the table and that may teach them a little respect in the opportunity they have in the NFL.

All this kid is going to do is find a new dealer not hard in Baltimore and a new crib to rent and destroy.

All the talent in the world but not a brain cell to be found!

I agree the Giants did him a solid but why? All it does is enable the player to continue on his path.
woops, college

Not a fan of wild Will anymore. Very surprised that an NFL franchise would give him another shot. I have no confidence that we will make the most of another NFL contract.
How is Spags not a DC at least

Ugh - I have hard reading this stuff. Watch him become their new all pro safety for the next 10 years.
I don't care how good or not he becomes for the Ravens.
vibe4giants : 7/26/2014 11:55 am : link
He proved the The Giants couldn't trust him. That's where I lost interest.

And this whole 'will come back to haunt us'…. Eh. If he intercepts Eli in the Super Bowl and returns it for a TD with no time left on the clock, that would be bitterly ironic. Otherwise, his future performance isn't going to mean a thing to me. As to the upcoming season, if a Safety who can only play roughly half the season is the make or break guy, you were probably already pretty broken to begin with. So I'm not worried the key to everything slipped through the Giants fingers.

For a bunch of greasy football fans, there are a lot of romantics on here.
I still think
PEEJ : 7/26/2014 11:58 am : link
he could have been a cheap insurance policy in case on injury at safety.
Insurance is something *you know* you can count on.
vibe4giants : 7/26/2014 12:12 pm : link
Hill is not that. Hill is a guy so unreliable you need to make sure you have an insurance player behind him.
If they believe Hill has an opportunity to reform
andrew_nyg : 7/26/2014 12:19 pm : link
himself in a fresh environment, they need to consider the environment that he will be entrenched in now. Baltimore/DC area is a powder keg for a kid like this.

Look up and down the Ravens roster over the past 14 months, it reads like a Most Wanted report.
It's quite humurous to see Will Hill being mentioned
kmed : 7/26/2014 12:25 pm : link
as insurance. Whats the opposite of insurance? That's what Will Hill is.

If anything, he's completely unreliable so anything he adds is gravy and should be unexpected. He has proven two things in his short time in the NFL:

1. He's extremely talented
2. He's extremely unreliable

in, he could fill in a few games for an injured starter before getting suspended again. Hopefully by that time the starter is back and they cut Hill. You know, that kind of insurance.
Theres plenty of weed available to him in Baltimore.

Sure, but the point of insurance is that it's there when you need it. A guy who may very well find himself in trouble and facing suspension again doesn't make for the best insurance policy. And I'm not really questioning their signing him - he's a talented guy and if he gets his act together, could be very valuable for them. But he's a guy they're taking a chance on, and while that may be a very worthwhile chance to take, he's not really a reliable insurance policy.
The guy found

trouble in Florida so a change of scenery alone won't make a difference. If he hasn't changed he'll find trouble. It sucks doing the right thing sometimes.
