NFT: Rangers sign Brassard - 5 Yrs, $25MM

Mad Mike : 7/27/2014 3:54 pm
That's a big contract.
link - ( New Window )
It's big
Kyle in NY : 7/27/2014 3:57 pm : link
But that's the going rate for top six centers right now, which he now is in our lineup. Cap is going up, remember.
yikes
feelflows : 7/27/2014 4:02 pm : link
But your 100% right. Going rate for a 2nd line center. He owes Richards a steak dinner for getting bought out lol
condsidering...
vonritz : 7/27/2014 4:05 pm : link
the contract goes into his UFA years, it's a pretty good deal. Slats has done a wonderful job with the RFAs this year.
Get Moore done and they're ready for camp battles
JonC : 7/27/2014 4:08 pm : link
I'm hopeful a few youngsters beat out some of the UFAs they chose to sign.
what are they gonna have to pay
Phil in LA : 7/27/2014 4:12 pm : link
Stepan?
O'Reilly just got $6m from the Avs
Kyle in NY : 7/27/2014 4:13 pm : link
and Stepan has actually out-produced him. Figure his camp will start at that number.
We still
PaulN : 7/27/2014 4:21 pm : link
Need to sign Moore I know, but anyone know how much cap space is left. I was hoping to be able to add another player, a decent one if available, I have not looked.
Depends on the structure
Phil in LA : 7/27/2014 4:22 pm : link
of Brassards deal.

How has Stepan out-produced him? Stepan had 57 points to O'Reilly's 64 last year.
Stepan
MookGiants : 7/27/2014 4:32 pm : link
deserves no more than two million- giantranger
Brett
Kyle in NY : 7/27/2014 4:40 pm : link
Over the course of their careers. Stepan with 197 points in 294 games, O'Reilly with 191 in 345 games.
Now O'Reilly did come into the league
Kyle in NY : 7/27/2014 4:44 pm : link
at age 18, Stepan at 20. But figure that's a comparison they'll be looking at in negotiations.
only $1.3M in cap space left
JonC : 7/27/2014 4:46 pm : link
according to Cap Geek.
Phil -contract structure
SJGiant : 7/27/2014 4:50 pm : link
It looks like every Rangers contract on capgeek is evenly spread over over the life of the contract
If two bottom fwds and one dman are sent down
JonC : 7/27/2014 4:51 pm : link
you'd have close to $4M in space, so it depends how fluidly you view the current roster.
Contract
SJGiant : 7/27/2014 4:54 pm : link
7 mil, 6 mil, 5 mil, 3.5 mil and 3.5 mil according to snyrangersblog link
No room for Moore
Phil in LA : 7/27/2014 5:06 pm : link
though we are allowed to be 10% over now.
Hope he scores 20 goals this year
Giants2012 : 7/27/2014 5:12 pm : link
I guess that's the cost.
we have plenty of room for Moore
vonritz : 7/27/2014 5:13 pm : link
The Rangers have $1.3 mil in cap space. Moore will only get $1 mil

Interesting. Probably designed to allow us to trade him down the road. To a team that isnt near the cap, 3.5 million is the relevant number, not the 5 million AAV.
Nice job structuring the deal
bxgiants4 : 7/27/2014 6:00 pm : link
Nice job again Sather. Give the man credit
Well, Brassard got his big boy contract
Greg from LI : 7/27/2014 6:07 pm : link
Time to step up his production accordingly.
Brassard has stepped up
djm : 7/27/2014 7:17 pm : link
The last two postseasons. He may not be a big time regular season player but he's a legit second liner and he plays well in the playoffs.
He is a great 3rd liner
Carl in CT : 7/27/2014 8:17 pm : link
DS is a great 2nd liner. Please find me a true #1 center. Move Staal + pieces. Get it done and it will be a great offseason!
I'd rather have had them go to arbitration
Anakim : 7/27/2014 9:01 pm : link
Not that stats tell the whole story obviously, but IDK how much leverage a 40 point RFA has.
Good signing he's worth that...
Torrag : 7/27/2014 9:01 pm : link
...especially with the cap expansion coming in the next couple of years.
this is a deal that had to get done
oipolloi : 7/28/2014 3:06 am : link
but Stepan and Brassard as the 1-2 centers is a big weakness vis-a-vis a team like the Kings

Brassard is at best an average second line center on a good team. And he is actually probably below average if you compare the Rangers to other top 10 teams.

Stepan would be an excellent second line center. But as a 1? meh

center is not a strength
.
JonC : 7/28/2014 9:43 am : link
8:05PM: If John Moore comes in around $1 million and the Rangers final two forward spots go to Jesper Fast ($805,000) and JT Miller (894,167), the Rangers will have around $1.3 million in cap space. (Brooks)

According to Cap Geek, adding in Miller, Fast and Moore, but putting Chris Mueller, Matt Hunwick and Matthew Lombardi in the AHL gives the Rangers $1.43 million in cap space. (Cap Geek)
the above doesn't factor in Carcillo as the 14th forward
JonC : 7/28/2014 9:46 am : link
So they're essentially capped out.
Definitely a rich deal... but market value
MetsAreBack : 7/28/2014 11:20 am : link

and the guy is only 26 yrs old with essentially 4 straight seasons at 45 points/season. As others mentioned, the front-loaded aspect gives them flexibility to deal him in 3-4 years when our window slams shut.

Let's see what he can do in a more prominent role next season. I still wish we'd replaced Richards with someone up the middle who maybe wasnt as good, but could still chip in 40-45 points.

Hopefully that guy is JT Miller.. but he'll need to make a big leap vs what we saw this past season to produce that. We also remain incredibly thin up the middle - just have to hope Stepan at the very least can play 75+ games.

Has anyone read a decent breakdown
JonC : 7/28/2014 5:54 pm : link
as to which players mgmt thinks could make the big club this Fall?
like this deal
Davisian : 7/28/2014 10:28 pm : link
Wraps him up for a few seasons, market value for his numbers and won't be untradeable if things aren't working out.

Miller or Fast seem to be the most likely. Lindberg is less likely, but might get a shot in TC. Conor Allen has a chance as the #7 D or if we trade John Moore or Kevin Klein to free up some salary
