NFT: Tulo at Yankees game yesterday...

Mike in St. Louis : 7/28/2014 10:28 am
I know this was mentioned on the game day thread yesterday but doubt many people saw it...

Rockies' "nation" supposedly not happy with him...

given what it would take (and who knows if the Yanks have enough to trade), what say you to Tulo on the Yanks given his contract, injury history (worse than Ellsbury's), etc...?

here's his contract, which runs through 2020...

"Under the new deal, he receives $16 million in 2014 and $20 million yearly from 2015 through 2019. He will have a $14 million base salary in 2020, which could increase by as much as $6 million in escalators based on his 2019 performance -- for example, if he makes the All-Star team or wins a Gold Glove. Colorado gets a $14 million option for 2021 with a $4 million buyout."

They need to move away from +30 year old players locked into long, expensive contracts.

Especially ones who have injury history.
Strictly as far as getting Tulo,
kmed : 7/28/2014 10:35 am : link
absolutely. He's injury prone, but he's a fantastic SS and it's not like we have anyone lined up in the near future. Plus he's a middle of the order bat that we desperately need. That being said, I don't see how it's possible. He's going to cost a ton and it's not like he can force his way to the Yankees. The Yankees would have to clean house of any and all prospects and that still might not be good enough to get it done.
Tulo's contract is a bargain for what he brings to the table
kmed : 7/28/2014 10:36 am : link
and he's 29 and in his prime.
Also, there's nothing wrong with him going to the game, IMO.
kmed : 7/28/2014 10:38 am : link
I think people are reading way too much into it. Much like everyone else that plays baseball, he's a huge Jeter fan and Jeter has had a large influence on him. He just wanted to see Jeter play as a fan because he was around the corner for a Dr's appt. No big deal at all.
I'd happily take him
UConn4523 : 7/28/2014 10:39 am : link
he'd be a great replacement, and worth the risk of injury even at that pricetag. He's certainly a guy I can root for too.
Despite his injury concerns
sshin05 : 7/28/2014 10:41 am : link
his contract is a bargain comparative to his hitting peers. He's the type of guy any team should absolutely get.
if the Cardinals or Mets
EmpireWF : 7/28/2014 10:42 am : link
are willing to unload the prospects & take on the money, there's no way the Yankees are in on Tulo.
His stats are Coors inflated. He's a great hitter there.
BeerFridge : 7/28/2014 11:00 am : link
Not great elsewhere. I wouldn't want to pay him that salary for his away production.
Rockies' Nation??

I live in Denver and if Rockies' Nation exists it's probably made up of 2 people. Tulo going to that game is the least of their problems.

The crazy thing is that a lot of people still go the games. It's a great stadium in a great location so regardless of how bad the Rockies are people will go. The owner is constantly bashed on sports radio for fielding a crappy team year after year. There have been people lobbying for boycotts but not mater what people still go. The running joke here is if someone said they want to the Rockies game the next questions is "what did you do afterwards?" instead of "who won?"

I think McLovin is right...

I lived in Colorado for ten years, and went to many, many Rockies games. The prices are very reasonable for entertainment (especially in the "rock pile") and there are many, many corporate sponsors. I probably went to the Rockies at least 30 times or so and never once paid for a ticket. My firm had a ton of seasons tickets and so many of my friends had the same situation such that there was always a seat available on the corporate dime.

I think that's the real reason attendance stays high. The Rockies' season ticket holder staff has done a fantastic job with their corporate clients.
I love him as a player
sinctybldh : 7/28/2014 12:00 pm : link
but I don't want him mainly because it will prevent the Yankees from building from within. He will cost the Yankees every ranked prospect they have. Not to mention he gets injured every single season and misses a good chunk of the season.
i'll still never forget
RasputinPrime : 7/28/2014 12:05 pm : link
how cheap the parking around the stadium is in Denver. Just crazy.

I'll put in a word to Cash to take Tulo if Gray is thrown in too.

I disagree with this. Every player will hit better at home for the most part. First off, his road numbers aren't "bad".. and if his home numbers were still better than that, he'd be an excellent player anyway.

The idea that he's just a product of Coors simply isn't true. He's a really good player. Health is really the only concern I'd have.
just a shame
PaulBlakeTSU : 7/28/2014 12:21 pm : link
he couldn't stay healthy, because he is a superstar talent. But at his age and with his injury history, I'm not sure it's worth investing long term in him.
Yeah, no thanks.

Will never be a Yank, those days are over, get on board already, buying whoever you want has ended, due to the salary structure of the league now and moving forward. So those who wanted competitive balance are going to get it, the small teams are getting richer, the bigger market teams poorer, you must build a good minor league system and bring in as many foreign players as possible, and then use the extra money to help your team. You will only be able to help a little from now on, big time players will be swooped up by one of the smaller market teams now a lot more frequently.
First, on the issue of his attendance
Matt M. : 7/28/2014 1:05 pm : link
I don't see it as a big deal. I believe he simply wanted to see Jeter as a fan. And, i have no problem with that. I don't think it had anything to do with the embarrassing jersey situation from the day before.

Second, on the issue of him coming to the Yankees I say no. He is a phenomenal player who would fill a big hole. But, as others have expressed, I think it would deplete the Yankees of too many prospects, of which they don't have a lot to begin with. As a Fa, I'd be in. As a trade, no thank you. That said, I have no idea who will or should play SS next year.
his road numbers are excellent for a good defensive shortstop
Greg from LI : 7/28/2014 1:20 pm : link
.257/.364/.447 on the road. The only SS in baseball whose 2014 numbers beat Tulo's road numbers is Hanley (.281/.376/.466), and he's an absolute butcher in the field.

20 Million bucks? Almost always misses significant time? NOPE. Not on board with that, even though he'd be a significant upgrade over what El Capitan is doing this year.
His injury concerns are absolutely valid, IMO,
kmed : 7/28/2014 2:17 pm : link
but people trying to suggest that he's not going to be great because of his road numbers are not valid. Just about every player in baseball does better at home and his splits are a little worse than most because of being at Coors, but if you split the difference, he's still the best SS in baseball. Talentwise, he's well worth his contract. Again though, his injury history is a concern.
Rockies
Deej : 7/28/2014 2:41 pm : link
more than any team in sports I forgive them their struggles. It's nearly impossible to design a successful pitching staff there. Yes, you might get fortunate one year and put it all together for a playoff run, but those runs could have just as easily been 75 win seasons had the pitching returned to norm. And And I think it's a pretty tough draw for FAs since pitchers get shelled and hitters get dinged for hitting in Coors. Not sure they actually struggle to get FA hitters, but I could see a guy on a make-good deal turning them down.
I like him and he's a good player but I just think that
BeerFridge : 7/28/2014 4:07 pm : link
there's a good chance he won't hit in our ballpark and you'll have to trade big prospects for the right to pay him 20 M per while he reaches the time in his career when injuries become MORE likely.

I guess I understand wanting him and he would definitely be a good replacement choice for Jeter but if it costs big prospects then I'd rather look somewhere else. It's time for the Yankees to get guys entering their prime not leaving it.
Again though,
kmed : 7/28/2014 4:10 pm : link
I understand the concerns regarding his age and injury history. I understand the risks in adding that kind of salary. I do not understand why he won't hit at our park. He's one of the better hitters in the game and arguably the best hitting SS in the game.
